Claims
- 1. A composition of a thiophosphoretted additive obtained by a process comprising reacting a sodium or a calcium sulfonate surbasified by sodium or calcium carbonate, showing 0.9 to 10 basic equivalents per kilogram, with a phosphorus sulfide used in such proportion that the ratio of molar phosphorus to the basic equivalent of the surbasified sulfonate ranges from 0.002 to 0.15 and;
- contacting resultant reaction product of the surbasified sulfonate and the phosphorus sulfide with at least one active hydrogen compound selected from the group consisting of water, an alcohol, a phenol, a carboxylic acid, an ester-acid, a mineral acid, a mineral base, an amine, an amide and mercaptan.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1, wherein said alcohol is methanol or isopropanol, said carboxylic acid is acetic acid, said ester-acid is dialkylphosphite, said mineral acid is boric acid or phosphoric acid, said mineral base is ammonia, and said mercaptan in dimercaptothiadiazole or a substituted dimercaptothiadiazole of formula: ##STR2## wherein x is 1-5; when x is 1; R is H or hydrocarbyl, and when x is above 1, R is hydrocarbyl.
- 3. A composition according to claim 2 wherein said phosphorus sulfide is selected from P.sub.4 S.sub.7, P.sub.4 S.sub.9 and P.sub.4 S.sub.10.
- 4. A composition according to claim 3 wherein said phosphorus sulfide is P.sub.4 S.sub.10.
- 5. A composition according to claim 2 wherein the reaction is carried out at a pressure ranging from the atmospheric pressure to 0.5 MPa and at a temperature ranging from 60.degree.-130.degree. C.
- 6. A composition according to claim 5 wherein said phosphorus sulfide is P.sub.4 S.sub.10.
- 7. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said active hydrogen compound is used in a molar amount from 0.1 to 5 per mole of phosphorus in the phosphorus sulfide.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the contacting of said resultant reaction product with said active hydrogen compound is performed at a pressure ranging from the atmospheric pressure to 0.5 MPa and at a temperature ranging from 60 to 130.degree. C.
- 9. A composition according to claim 1 prepared in a hydrocarbon solvent boiling between 60.degree. and 150.degree. C.
- 10. A composition according to claim 1, wherein said active hydrogen compound is a mercaptan, an amide or an amine.
- 11. A composition according to claim 1, wherein said active hydrogen compound is a mercaptan, an ester-acid, a mineral acid or a carboxylic acid.
- 12. A composition according to claim 1, wherein said active hydrogen compound is a mercaptan, water, an alcohol or a phenol.
- 13. A composition according to claim 1, wherein said active hydrogen compound is a mercaptan or ammonia.
- 14. A composition according to claim 1, wherein said active hydrogen compound is a mercaptan.
- 15. A composition according to claim 1, wherein said phosphorus sulfide is selected from P.sub.4 S.sub.7, P.sub.4 S.sub.9, and P.sub.4 S.sub.10.
- 16. A composition according to claim 1, wherein said phosphorus sulfide is P.sub.4 S.sub.10.
- 17. A composition according to claim 1, wherein said active hydrogen compound is dimercaptothiadiazole or a substituted dimercaptothiadiazole of the formula: ##STR3## wherein X is 1-5, when X is 1, R is H or hydrocarbyl, and when X is above 1, R is hydrocarbyl.
- 18. A composition according to claim 17, wherein said active hydrogen compound is used in a molar amount of from 0.1 to 5 per mole of phosphorus in the phosphorus sulfide.
- 19. A mineral or synthetic oil, or a lubricating grease, comprising a composition according to claim 2 incorporated as an additive, at a concentration of 0.5 to 20% by weight.
