Claims
- 1. A hair dye composition comprising 0.001 to 5% of a cyano substituted nitroaniline dye compound having the structure ##STR7## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, polyhydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkoxyalkyl and aminoalkyl, and R.sub.3 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxy, hydroxyalkyl and halogen, the alkyl and alkoxy moieties having from 1 to about 6 carbons; from about 0.01 to about 10% of one or more other dye compounds, and an aqueous vehicle as the remainder.
- 2. The hair dye composition of claim 1 further comprising one or more of the following: surface-active agents in an amount up to about 25%; thickening agents in an amount up to about 20%, nonaqueous solvents in an amount up to about 20%, and fragrance in an amount up to about 5%.
- 3. The hair dye composition of claim 2 wherein the concentrations of the recited constituents are as follows: 0.01-4% other dyes, 0.1-5% surface-active agent, 0.1-5% thickening agent, 1-10% nonaqueous solvent, 0.05-5% pH modifier, and 0.05-1% fragrance.
- 4. The hair dye composition of claim 3 wherein the hair dye is 4-(2-hydroxyethylamino)-3-nitrobenzonitrile.
- 5. The hair dye composition of claim 3 wherein the hair dye is 4-(2,3-dihydroxypropylamino)-3-nitrobenzonitrile.
- 6. The hair dye composition of claim 3 wherein the hair dye is 4-[2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethylamino]-3-nitrobenzonitrile.
- 7. The hair dye composition of claim 3 in the form of a lotion having a viscosity between 100 and 10,000 cps.
- 8. A method of dyeing hair comprising the step of applying to the hair the composition of claim 1 or 3.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the dye compound (I) is 4-(2-hydroxyethylamino)-3-nitrobenzonitrile.
