Claims
- 1. A no-slip steer controlled reduction drive for a vehicle having a propulsion drive shaft providing same direction driving torque to planetary differential reduction gears arranged on opposite sides of said vehicle for respectively driving right and left traction elements, said drive shaft being connected to drive elements of said planetary differential reduction gears, said system comprising:
- a. a pair of steering control shafts rotated in opposite directions by a bevel gear drive, said steering control shafts extending directly from said bevel gear drive to differentiating elements of said planetary reduction gears;
- b. a worm and worm wheel reducer for transmitting steering control torque to said bevel gear drive without being turned by said bevel gear drive;
- c. means for generating said steering control torque rotationally independent of said driving torque and for applying said steering control torque to said worm; and
- d. a clutch system for diverting said driving torque from said propulsion drive shaft to said worm wheel to use said driving torque for pivot turning.
- 2. The system of claim 1 including a power take-off for transmitting said driving torque to said worm wheel.
- 3. In a no-slip steer drive for a vehicle having a pair of planetary differential reduction gears arranged on opposite sides of said vehicle for turning opposite drive elements, a transverse drive shaft transmitting driving torque to both of said planetary reduction gears, and a pair of counterrotating steering control shafts transmitting steering control torque, rotationally independent of said driving torque, to both of said differential reduction gears, the improvement comprising:
- a. said counterrotating steering control shafts extending from said reduction gears directly to a worm and worm wheel reduction input of said steering control torque to said counterrotating control shafts so that said counterrotating control shafts are rotationally controlled by torque on said worm and are unable to rotate said worm; and
- b. a power take-off for diverting said driving torque to said worm wheel for propulsion drive-assisted pivot turning.
- 4. The improvement of claim 3 including a clutch for selectively engaging said driving torque with said worm wheel.
- 5. The improvement of claim 3 wherein said worm and worm wheel reduction input includes a bevel gear driven by said worm wheel and meshed with bevel gears on said counterrotating control shafts.
- 6. A method of inputting steering control torque to a no-slip, steer drive system for a vehicle having a planetary differential reduction gear system on each side of said vehicle for turning said drive elements and having driving torque transmitted through drive shafting to turn drive elements of both of said reduction gear systems in the same direction, said method comprising:
- a. generating steering control torque rotationally independent of said driving torque;
- b. reducing said steering control torque with a worm and worm wheel input to counterrotating control shafts that cannot turn said worm;
- c. transmitting the reduced steering control torque through said counterrotating shafts from said worm and worm wheel input directly to steering elements of both of said reduction gear systems; and
- d. applying said driving torque to said worm wheel for pivot turning.
- 7. The method of claim 6 including turning a bevel gear drive with said worm wheel for counterrotating said control shafts.
- 8. The method of claim 6 including using a power take-off transmitting said driving torque to said worm wheel.
- 9. The method of claim 8 including clutching and unclutching said driving torque with said worm wheel.
