Claims
- 1. A tampon applicator comprising a non-absorbent substrate and an effective amount of a first active ingredient having a general formula:
- 2. The tampon applicator as set forth in claim 1 wherein the first active ingredient is selected from the group consisting of thiolactomycin and thiomalonate.
- 3. The tampon applicator as set forth in claim 1 wherein the first active ingredient is present in an amount of from about 0.05 micromoles/gram of non-absorbent article to about 5 micromoles/gram of non-absorbent article.
- 4. The tampon applicator as set forth in claim 1 wherein the first active ingredient is present in an amount of from about 0.1 micromoles/gram of non-absorbent article to about 1 micromole/gram of non-absorbent article.
- 5. The tampon applicator as set forth in claim 1 wherein the first active ingredient is effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
- 6. A non-absorbent article comprising a non-absorbent substrate and an effective amount of a first active ingredient having a general formula:
- 7. The non-absorbent articles as set forth in claim 6 wherein the first active ingredient is selected from the group consisting of thiolactomycin and thiomalonate.
- 8. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 wherein the first active ingredient is present in an amount of from about 0.05 micromoles/gram of non-absorbent article to about 5 micromoles/gram of non-absorbent article.
- 9. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 wherein the first active ingredient is present in an amount of from about 0.1 micromoles/gram of non-absorbent article to about 1 micromole/gram of non-absorbent article.
- 10. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 wherein the first active ingredient is effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
- 11. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 wherein the non-absorbent article is selected from the group consisting of incontinence devices, barrier birth control devices, douches, contraceptive sponges, and tampon applicators.
- 12. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 wherein the first active ingredient reduces the formation of TSST-1 when the non-absorbent article is exposed to S. aureus by at least about 60%.
- 13. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 further comprising a pharmaceutically active material selected from the group consisting of antimicrobials, antioxidants, anti-parasitic agents, antipruritics, astringents, local anaesthetics and anti-inflammatory agents.
- 14. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 further comprising an effective amount of a second active ingredient, said second active ingredient comprising a compound with an ether, ester, amide, glycosidic, or amine bond linking a C8-C18 fatty acid to an aliphatic alcohol wherein the second active ingredient is effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Gram positive bacteria.
- 15. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 14 wherein the C8-C18 fatty acid is linked to a polyalkoxylated sulfate salt.
- 16. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 14 wherein the C8-C18 fatty acid is linked to a sulfosuccinic salt.
- 17. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 further comprising an effective amount of a second active ingredient having the general formula:

- 19. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein R5 is a monovalent saturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl moiety having from 1 to about 10 carbon atoms.
- 20. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of —R6C(O)H, —R6OH, —R6COOH, —OR6OH, and —OR6COOH and wherein R6 is a divalent saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl moiety having from 1 to about 15 carbon atoms.
- 21. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 20 wherein R6 is a divalent saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl moiety having from 1 to about 10 carbon atoms.
- 22. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 20 wherein R6 is a divalent saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl moiety having from 1 to about 6 carbon atoms.
- 23. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of
- 24. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 23 wherein R7 is a trivalent saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl moiety having from 1 to about 10 carbon atoms.
- 25. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 23 wherein R7 is a trivalent saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl moiety having from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms.
- 26. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein R1 is —R6OH, R6 is a divalent saturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl moiety having from 1 to about 6 carbon atoms, and R2, R3, and R4 are hydrogen.
- 27. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein R1 is —R6COOH, R6 is a divalent unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl moiety having from 1 to about 6 carbon atoms, and R2, R3, and R4 are hydrogen.
- 28. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein R1 is —C(O)NH2, R2 is OH, and R3 and R4 are hydrogen.

- 33. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.1 micromoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 34. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.5 micromoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 35. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount from about 1 micromole per gram of non-absorbent article to about 50 micromoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 36. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein the second active ingredient is effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
- 37. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 wherein the non-absorbent article is selected from the group consisting of incontinence devices, barrier birth control devices, douches, contraceptive sponges, and tampon applicators.
- 38. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 wherein the combination of the first active ingredient and the second active ingredient reduce the formation of TSST-1 when the non-absorbent article is exposed to S. aureus by at least about 80%.
- 39. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 17 further comprising a pharmaceutically active material selected from the group consisting of antimicrobials, antioxidants, anti-parasitic agents, antipruritics, astringents, local anaesthetics and anti-inflammatory agents.
- 40. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 further comprising an effective amount of a second active ingredient comprising an isoprenoid compound effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Gram positive bacteria.
- 41. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 40 wherein the isoprenoid compound is a polyisoprenoid.
- 42. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 40 wherein the isoprenoid compound is a terpene.
- 43. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 42 wherein the terpene is an acyclic terpene.
- 44. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 43 wherein the acyclic terpene is saturated.
- 45. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 43 wherein the acyclic terpene is unsaturated.
- 46. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 42 wherein the terpene is a cyclic terpene.

- 58. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 40 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.1 micromoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 59. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 40 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of from about 0.5 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article to about 100 micromoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 60. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 40 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount from about 1 micromole per gram of non-absorbent article to about 50 micromoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 61. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 40 wherein the second active ingredient is effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
- 62. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 wherein the non-absorbent article is selected from the group consisting of incontinence devices, barrier birth control devices, douches, contraceptive sponges, and tampon applicators.
- 63. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 40 wherein the combination of the first active ingredient and the second active ingredient reduce the formation of TSST-1 when the non-absorbent article is exposed to S. aureus by at least about 80%.
- 64. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 40 further comprising a pharmaceutically active material selected from the group consisting of antimicrobials, antioxidants, anti-parasitic agents, antipruritics, astringents, local anaesthetics and anti-inflammatory agents.
- 65. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 further comprising an effective amount of a second active ingredient having the general formula:

- 67. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 wherein R10 is a straight or branched alkenyl group.
- 68. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 wherein R10 is obtained from the group consisting of caprylic acid, capric acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and stearic acid.
- 69. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 wherein R11 is an aliphatic alcohol.
- 70. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 69 wherein R11 is an aliphatic alcohol selected from the group consisting of glycerol, glycol, sucrose, glucose, sorbitol, and sorbitan.
- 71. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 70 wherein R11 is a glycol selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, and combinations thereof.
- 72. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 wherein the second active ingredient is selected from the group consisting of laureth-3, laureth-4, laureth-5, PPG-5 lauryl ether, 1-0-dodecyl-rac-glycerol, sodium laureth sulfate, potassium laureth sulfate, disodium laureth (3) sulfosuccinate, dipotassium laureth (3) sulfosuccinate and polyethylene oxide (2) sorbitol ether.
- 73. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.1 micromoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 74. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.005 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 75. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount from about 5 micromoles per gram of non-absorbent article to about 2.0 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 76. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 wherein the second active ingredient is effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
- 77. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 wherein the non-absorbent article is selected from the group consisting of incontinence devices, barrier birth control devices, douches, contraceptive sponges, and tampon applicators.
- 78. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 wherein the combination of the first active ingredient and the second active ingredient reduce the formation of TSST-1 when the non-absorbent article is exposed to S. aureus by at least about 80%.
- 79. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 65 further comprising a pharmaceutically active material selected from the group consisting of antimicrobials, antioxidants, anti-parasitic agents, antipruritics, astringents, local anaesthetics and anti-inflammatory agents.
- 80. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 further comprising an effective amount of a second active ingredient, the second active ingredient comprising an alkyl polyglycoside effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Gram positive bacteria.
- 81. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 80 wherein the alkyl polyglycoside has an alkyl group having from about 8 to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 82. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 81 wherein the alkyl group is a linear alkyl group.
- 83. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 81 wherein the alkyl polyglycoside has an alkyl group having from about 8 to about 14 carbon atoms.
- 84. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 80 wherein the alkyl polyglycoside has an HLB of 12 to 14.
- 85. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 80 wherein the alkyl polyglycoside has an HLB of 10 to 15.
- 86. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 80 wherein the alkyl polyglycoside has the general formula:

- 91. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 80 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.005 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 92. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 80 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.005 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article to about 1 millimole per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 93. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 80 wherein the alkyl polyglycoside is selected from the group consisting of Glucopon 220, Glucopon 225, Glucopon 425, Glucopon 600, Glucopon 625, and TL 2141.
- 94. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 80 wherein the combination of the first active ingredient and the second active ingredient reduces the formation of TSST-1 when the non-absorbent article is exposed to S. aureus by at least about 80%.
- 95. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 further comprising an effective amount of a second active ingredient selected from the group consisting of glycerol monolaurate and myreth-3-myristate wherein said active ingredient is effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Gram positive bacteria.
- 96. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 further comprising an effective amount of a second active ingredient having the general formula:
- 97. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 96 wherein R17 is derived from a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid.
- 98. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 97 wherein R17 is derived from an acid selected from the group consisting of caprylic acid, capric acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid.
- 99. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 96 wherein the second active ingredient is selected from the group consisting of sodium lauryl sarcosinate, lauramide MEA, lauramide DEA, lauramidopropyl dimethylamine, disodium lauramide MEA sulfosuccinate, and disodium lauroamphodiacetate.
- 100. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 96 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.0001 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 101. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 96 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.005 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 102. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 96 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount from about 0.005 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article to about 2 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 103. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 96 wherein the second active ingredient is effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
- 104. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 96 wherein the non-absorbent article is selected from the group consisting of incontinence devices, barrier birth control devices, douches, contraceptive sponges, and tampon applicators.
- 105. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 96 wherein the combination of the first active ingredient and the second active ingredient reduce the formation of TSST-1 when the non-absorbent article is exposed to S. aureus by at least about 80%.
- 106. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 96 further comprising a pharmaceutically active material selected from the group consisting of antimicrobials, antioxidants, anti-parasitic agents, antipruritics, astringents, local anaesthetics and anti-inflammatory agents.
- 107. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 further comprising an effective amount of a second active ingredient having the general formula:
- 108. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 107 wherein R22 comprises a carboxyl salt, the carboxyl salt having a cationic moiety selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium and combinations thereof.
- 109. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 107 wherein R22 comprises an amine selected from the group consisting of lauramine, lauramino, propionic acid, sodium lauriminodipropionic acid, lauryl hydroxyethyl imidazoline and mixtures thereof.
- 110. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 107 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.00001 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 111. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 107 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.0005 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 112. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 107 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount from about 0.005 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article to about 2 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 113. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 107 wherein the non-absorbent article is selected from the group consisting of incontinence devices, barrier birth control devices, douches, contraceptive sponges, and tampon applicators.
- 114. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 107 wherein the combination of the first active ingredient and the second active ingredient reduce the formation of TSST-1 when the non-absorbent article is exposed to S. aureus by at least about 80%.
- 115. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 107 further comprising a pharmaceutically active material selected from the group consisting of antimicrobials, antioxidants, anti-parasitic agents, antipruritics, astringents, local anaesthetics and anti-inflammatory agents.
- 116. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 further comprising an effective amount of a second active ingredient having the general formula:

- 118. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 116 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.00001 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 119. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 116 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount of at least about 0.0005 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 120. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 116 wherein the second active ingredient is present in an amount from about 0.005 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article to about 2 millimoles per gram of non-absorbent article.
- 121. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 116 wherein the second active ingredient is effective in substantially inhibiting the production of TSST-1 from Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
- 122. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 116 wherein the non-absorbent article is selected from the group consisting of incontinence devices, barrier birth control devices, douches, contraceptive sponges, and tampon applicators.
- 123. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 116 wherein the combination of the first active ingredient and the second active ingredient reduce the formation of TSST-1 when the non-absorbent article is exposed to S. aureus by at least about 80%.
- 124. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 116 further comprising a pharmaceutically active material selected from the group consisting of antimicrobials, antioxidants, anti-parasitic agents, antipruritics, astringents, local anaesthetics and anti-inflammatory agents.
- 125. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 6 wherein the first active ingredient is based on structure (I) and R300 is unsubstituted alkyl, selected from the group consisting of methyl and ethyl.
- 126. The non-absorbent article as set forth claim 6 wherein the first active ingredient is based on structure (I) and R301 is a monovalent, saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl moiety having about 4 to about 12 carbon atoms in the primary chain.
- 127. The non-absorbent article as set forth in claim 126, wherein R301 is a hydrocarbyl moiety having in a primary chain selected from C4H4, C4H8, C4H6, C8H11, C8H12, C8H15, and C12H16.
