- 4. An animal feed composition in accordance with claim 1 wherein said tetracycline is a nitrile analog of tetracycine.
- 5. An animal feed composition in accordance with claim 1 wherein said tetracycline is a 6-alpha benzylthiomethylene tetracycline.
- 6. An animal feed composition in accordance with claim 1 wherein said tetracycline is a mono-N-alkyl amide of tetracycline.
- 7. An animal feed composition in accordance with claim 1 wherein said tetracycline is a 6-fluorodemethyl tetracycline.
- 8. An animal feed composition in accordance with claim 1 wherein said tetracycline is an 11-alpha-chlorotetracycline.
- 9. An animal feed composition comprising a tetracycline having substantially no effective antibacterial activity and possessing anti-collagenase activity or anti-collagen-destructive enzyme activity and animal feed, said tetracycline being present in said animal feed composition in an effective amount for enhancing feed conversion and growth promotion.
- 10. An animal feed composition in accordance with claim 9 wherein said tetracycline is present in said animal feed composition in an amount in the range of from about 10 grams to about 200 grams per ton of feed.
- 11. An animal feed composition in accordance with claim 9 wherein said animal feed is for young calves up to about 12 weeks of age and wherein the amount of tetracycline in the feed composition is such that, upon feeding, the calf takes up from about 0.1 mg to about 1.0 mg of tetracycline per pound of calf weight per day.
- 12. An animal feed composition in accordance with claim 9 wherein said animal feed is for beef cattle and wherein the amount of tetracycline in the feed composition is such that, upon feeding, the animal takes up from about 75 mg to about 300 mg per day.
- 13. A method of improving animal nutrition and increasing animal body weight by enhancing feed conversion and growth promotion which comporises feeding animals an effective amount of a feed which comprises an effective amount of a tetracycline having substantially no antibacterial activity but possessing anti-collagenase activity or anti-collagen-destructive enzyme activity.
- 14. A method in accordance with claim 13 wherein said tetracycline is present in said feed in an amount in the range from about 10 grams to about 200 grams per ton of feed.
- 15. A method of improving animal nutrition and increasing animal body weight by enhancing feed conversation and growth promotion which comprises feeding animals an effective amount of a feed which comprises an effective amount of a tetracycline having substantially no antibacterial activity but possessing anti-collagenase activity or anti-collagen-destructive enzyme activity selected from the group consisting of a nitrile analog of tetracycline, a 6-alpha benzylthiomethylene tetracycline, a mono-N-alkyl amide of tetracycline and an 11-alpha-chlortetracycline.
