Claims
- 1. A monitoring assembly in combination with a pneumatic tire; the combination comprising:
a rim; a tire mounted to the rim and defining a chamber between the tire and rim; a monitoring assembly loosely disposed in the chamber; the monitoring assembly including a monitoring device and a protective body surrounding the monitoring device; the protective body having an outer surface; and the protective body defining at least one open channel extending into the protective body from the outer surface.
- 2. The monitoring assembly of claim 1, wherein the protective body defines a plurality of channels extending into the protective body from the outer surface.
- 3. The monitoring assembly of claim 2, wherein at least one of the channels extends from the outer surface through the protective body to the outer surface.
- 4. The monitoring assembly of claim 1, wherein the protective body includes an inner protective layer and an outer protective layer; the channel extending through the outer protective layer to the inner protective layer.
- 5. The monitoring assembly of claim 4, wherein the outer protective layer has an outer surface; the outer protective layer defining a channel that extends from the outer surface through the outer protective layer to the outer surface.
- 6. The monitoring assembly of claim 4, wherein the inner protective layer is fabricated from a rigid encapsulation material.
- 7. The monitoring assembly of claim 6, wherein the outer protective layer is softer than the inner protective layer.
- 8. The monitoring assembly of claim 1, wherein the protective body is substantially spherical.
- 9. The monitoring assembly of claim 1, wherein the monitoring assembly is adapted to float on water.
- 10. The monitoring assembly of claim 9, further comprising a weight connected to the monitoring assembly; the weight adapted to orient the monitoring assembly in the liquid in a predictable orientation.
- 11. The monitoring assembly of claim 10, wherein the protective body defines a tube that provides communication between the monitoring device and the atmosphere surrounding the protective body; the tube having an opening where the tube exits the protective body.
- 12. The monitoring assembly of claim 11, wherein the weight is disposed substantially opposite from the tube opening.
- 13. The monitoring assembly of claim 1, further comprising a pair of wings extending outwardly from the protective body.
- 14. An improved monitoring assembly having a monitoring device adapted to measure temperature; the monitoring device surrounded by a protective body having an outer surface; the improvement comprising: at least one open channel extending from the outer surface of the protective body to a location inside the protective body.
- 15. The improvement of claim 14, wherein the protective body includes an inner layer and an outer layer; the open channel extending from the outer layer to the inner layer.
- 16. The improvement of claim 15, wherein a plurality of open channels are defined by the protective body.
- 17. The improvement of claim 14, wherein the protective body includes an inner layer and an outer layer; the open channel extending from the outer layer into the inner layer.
- 18. The improvement of claim 17, wherein the monitoring device includes a temperature measurement device; the open channel extending to a location adjacent the temperature measurement device.
- 19. The improvement of claim 14, wherein the open channel extends from a first location at the outer surface of the protective body to a second location at the outer surface of the protective body; the first and second locations being spaced apart.
