Claims
- 1. An authenticator device for verifying authenticity comprising:
- a sheet of medium having a varying random characteristic over an area of said sheet, said characteristic being inherent in the composition of said medium; and
- machine-readable indicia on said sheet of medium, decodable to explicitly indicate at least one specific area location on said sheet at which the characteristic is to be measured.
- 2. An authenticator according to claim 1 wherein said sheet of medium has a varying random characteristic over the complete area of said sheet.
- 3. An authenticator according to claim 1 wherein said characteristic of said medium comprises the translucency of said sheet.
- 4. An authenticator according to claim 1 wherein said medium comprises a fibrous material to define varying random characteristics apparent by irradiation.
- 5. An authenticator according to claim 1 wherein said medium comprises a paper-like material of randomly oriented fibers.
- 6. A system for verifying authenticators in the form of sheets having a varying random characteristic comprising:
- means for sensing an authenticator to provide location data and first identification measurements for a specific authenticator;
- radiant energy means for measuring said characteristic of a sheet at locations according to said location data to provide second identification measurements;
- means to process said second identification measurements to vary the representations thereof in accordance with the range thereof to provide processed second identification measurements; and
- means for comparing said first and second identification measurements to provide an indication of verification.
- 7. A system for verifying authenticators in the form of sheets having a varying random characteristic comprising:
- means for sensing an authenticator to provide location data and first identification measurements for a specific authenticator;
- radiant energy means for measuring said characteristic of a sheet at locations according to said location data to provide second identification measurements;
- means to test said second identification measurements to indicate null measurements above a predetermined level for providing a warning signal; and
- means for comparing said first and second identification measurements to provide an indication of verification.
- 8. A method of producing an authenticator device comprising the steps of:
- selecting a roll of medium defined as separate authenticators, each having a varying random characteristic over an area of said authenticator, said characteristic being inherent in the composition of said medium;
- driving said roll for access to said individual authenticators;
- with access to an indicator, measuring said characteristic at said area of said authenticator by sensing light as modulated by said area to provide identification data; and
- during said access, recording on said authenticator machine-readable indicia decodable to specify said characteristic at said area.
- 9. A method according to claim 8 wherein said recording step comprises magnetic recording.
