Claims
- 1. A process for carburizing ferrous metal objects consisting essentially of the following process steps:
- (a) mixing a composition comprising about 85-99% alkali metal chloride or a mixture of alkali metal chlorides; 0.25-8% of an activator, an oxygen containing compound selected from the group consisting of barium and strontium; and sufficient amount of, finely divided graphite to provide a continuous cover over the molten salt mixture;
- (b) melting and heating the mixture to a temperature in the range of about 900.degree. C.-1050.degree. C.;
- (c) maintaining the temperature for about 1 hour;
- (d) immersing said ferrous metal objects in the bath for a period of time to achieve the desired degree of carburization.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the temperature of the bath is 950.degree. C.
- 3. A process according to claim 1, wherein the immersion period is 2 hours.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein the composition comprises about 89% to about 98% of a 75:25 by weight mixture of sodium chloride and potassium chloride; about 0.5% to about 5% of activator added as strontium oxalate and sufficient amount of finely divided graphite to provide a continuous cover on the molten salt mixture.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein the composition comprises about 98% of a 50:50 mixture by weight of sodium chloride and potassium chloride; about 1% of activator added as strontium oxalate and about 1% of graphite.
- 6. An article of manufacture, a ferrous metal article, carburized in accordance with the process of claim 4, characterized by a greater concentration of carbon in the surface of the article than in the core and further characterized by having a strontium enriched surface.
