Claims
- 1. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver having a rotatable drive shaft, said chuck comprising:
- a generally cylindrical body member, said body member having a forward section and a rearward section, said rearward section having an axial bore formed therein to mate with said drive shaft of said driver and said forward section having an axial bore formed therein and a plurality of angularly disposed passageways formed therethrough and intersecting said axial bore;
- a plurality of jaws slidably positioned in each of said angularly disposed passageways, each of said jaws having a jaw face formed on one side thereof and threads formed on the opposite side thereof;
- a jaw engaging mechanism rotatably mounted relative said body so as to engage said jaw threads;
- at least one drive rib receiving portion non-rotatably configured with said jaw engaging mechanism so that a drive rib engaged in said drive rib receiving portion and caused to rotate will rotate said jaw engaging mechanism relative said jaws;
- a bearing thrust ring located on said body member;
- at least one anti-friction bearing disposed between said jaw engaging mechanism and said bearing thrust ring;
- a generally cylindrical sleeve member received over the forward section of said body, said sleeve member including at least one drive rib for engaging in said drive rib receiving portion; and
- a retaining member located on the forward section of said body and retaining said sleeve to said body.
- 2. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 1, wherein said thrust ring is a separate component from said body member, said thrust ring being disposed about said body member and extending radially outward therefrom so that the diameter of the bar stock from which the body member is made is less than would be necessary if the thrust ring was formed from said body member.
- 3. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 1, wherein said sleeve received over the forward section of the body is a front sleeve and wherein said chuck further includes a rear sleeve member fixed to the rearward section of said body member.
- 4. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 3, wherein said front sleeve is plastic and includes gripping ribs on at least a portion of its exterior surface and further wherein said rear sleeve includes a knurled exterior surface.
- 5. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 1, wherein said sleeve member extends to the rearward section of said body member.
- 6. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 1, wherein said jaw engaging mechanisms include an annular collar having a threaded inner diameter and an annulus non-rotatably engaged with said annular collar, said drive rib receiving portion being defined in said annulus.
- 7. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 6, wherein said annulus is a separate component from said annular collar.
- 8. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 6, wherein said annular collar is a split nut, said split nut being rotatably maintained together about said body by said annulus.
- 9. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 6, wherein said at least one drive rib receiving portion comprises a series of engaging teeth defined on said annulus.
- 10. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 1, wherein said body includes a groove formed in its forward section and said retaining member is received in said groove.
- 11. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 1, wherein said retaining member maintains said front sleeve in place by direct contact between said front sleeve and said forward section of said body.
- 12. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 1, wherein said sleeve is of unitary construction.
- 13. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 12, wherein said sleeve includes a grip boot received thereon.
- 14. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver having a rotatable drive shaft, said chuck comprising:
- a generally cylindrical body member, said body member having a forward section and a rearward section, said rearward section having an axial bore formed therein to mate with said drive shaft of said driver and said forward section having an axial bore formed therein and a plurality of angularly disposed passageways formed therethrough and intersecting said axial bore;
- a plurality of jaws slidably positioned in each of said angularly disposed passageways, each of said jaws having a jaw face formed on one side thereof and threads formed on the opposite side thereof;
- a threaded ring rotatably mounted on said body and in engagement with said threads on said jaws, said threaded ring including at least one drive rib receiving portion;
- a bearing thrust ring located on said body member;
- at least one anti-friction bearing disposed between said threaded ring and said bearing thrust ring;
- a generally cylindrical sleeve member received over the forward section of said body, said sleeve member including at least one drive rib for engaging the drive rib receiving portion on said threaded ring so that rotation of said front sleeve member will rotate said threaded ring; and
- a retaining member located on the forward section of said body and retaining said sleeve to said body.
- 15. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 14, wherein said thrust ring is a separate component from said body member, said thrust ring being disposed about said body member and extending radially outward therefrom.
- 16. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 14, wherein said sleeve received over the forward section of the body is a front sleeve and wherein said chuck further includes a rear sleeve member fixed to the rearward section of said body member.
- 17. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 16, wherein said front sleeve is plastic and includes gripping ribs on at least a portion of its exterior surface and further wherein said rear sleeve includes a knurled exterior surface.
- 18. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 14, wherein said sleeve member extends to the rearward section of said body.
- 19. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 14, wherein said threaded ring includes an annular collar having a threaded inner diameter and an annulus non-rotatably engaged with said annular collar, said at least one drive rib receiving portion being defined in said annulus.
- 20. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 19, wherein said annulus is a separate component from said annular collar.
- 21. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 19, wherein said annular collar is a split nut, said split nut being maintained together about said body by said annulus.
- 22. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 19, wherein said at least one drive rib receiving portion comprises a series of engaging teeth defined on said annulus.
- 23. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 14, wherein said body includes a groove formed in its forward section and said retaining member is received in said groove.
- 24. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 14, wherein said retaining member maintains said front sleeve in place by direct contact between said front sleeve and said forward section of said body.
- 25. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver having a rotatable drive shaft, said chuck comprising:
- a generally cylindrical body member, said body member having a forward section and a rearward section, said rearward section having an axial bore formed therein to mate with said drive shaft of said driver and said forward section having an axial bore formed therein and a plurality of angularly disposed passageways formed therethrough and intersecting said axial bore;
- a plurality of jaws slidably positioned in each of said angularly disposed passageways, each of said jaws having a jaw face formed on one side thereof and threads formed on the opposite side thereof;
- a jaw engaging mechanism rotatably mounted relative said body so as to engage said jaw threads;
- at least one drive rib receiving portion non-rotatably configured with said jaw engaging mechanism so that a drive rib engaged in said drive rib receiving portion and caused to rotate will rotate said jaw engaging mechanism relative said jaws;
- a bearing thrust ring located on said body member;
- at least one bearing surface disposed between said jaw engaging mechanism and said bearing thrust ring;
- a generally cylindrical sleeve member received over the forward section of said body, said sleeve member including at least one drive rib for engaging in said drive rib receiving portion; and
- a retaining member located on the forward section of said body and retaining said sleeve to said body.
- 26. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 25, wherein said thrust ring is a separate component from said body member, said thrust ring being disposed about said body member and extending radially outward therefrom so that the diameter of the bar stock from which the body member is made is less than would be necessary if the thrust ring was formed from said body member.
- 27. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 25, wherein said sleeve received over the forward section of the body is a front sleeve and wherein said chuck further includes a rear sleeve member fixed to the rearward section of said body member.
- 28. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 27, wherein said front sleeve is plastic and includes gripping ribs on at least a portion of its exterior surface and further wherein said rear sleeve includes a knurled exterior surface.
- 29. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 25, wherein said sleeve member extends to the rearward section of said body member.
- 30. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 25, wherein said jaw engaging mechanisms include an annular collar having a threaded inner diameter and an annulus non-rotatably engaged with said annular collar, said drive rib receiving portion being defined in said annulus.
- 31. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 30, wherein said annulus is a separate component from said annular collar.
- 32. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 30, wherein said annular collar is a split nut, said split nut being rotatably maintained together about said body by said annulus.
- 33. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 30, wherein said at least one drive rib receiving portion comprises a series of engaging teeth defined on said annulus.
- 34. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 25, wherein said body includes a groove formed in its forward section and said retaining member is received in said groove.
- 35. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 25, wherein said retaining member maintains said front sleeve in place by direct contact between said front sleeve and said forward section of said body.
- 36. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 25, wherein said sleeve is of unitary construction.
- 37. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 36, wherein said sleeve includes a grip boot received thereon.
- 38. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver having a rotatable drive shaft, said chuck comprising:
- a generally cylindrical body member, said body member having a forward section and a rearward section, said rearward section having an axial bore formed therein to mate with said drive shaft of said driver and said forward section having an axial bore formed therein and a plurality of angularly disposed passageways formed therethrough and intersecting said axial bore;
- a plurality of jaws slidably positioned in each of said angularly disposed passageways, each of said jaws having a jaw face formed on one side thereof and threads formed on the opposite side thereof;
- a threaded ring rotatably mounted on said body and in engagement with said threads on said jaws, said threaded ring including at least one drive rib receiving portion;
- a bearing thrust ring located on said body member;
- at least one bearing surface disposed between said threaded ring and said bearing thrust ring;
- a generally cylindrical sleeve member received over the forward section of said body, said sleeve member including at least one drive rib for engaging the drive rib receiving portion on said threaded ring so that rotation of said front sleeve member will rotate said threaded ring; and
- a retaining member located on the forward section of said body and retaining said sleeve to said body.
- 39. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 38, wherein said thrust ring is a separate component from said body member, said thrust ring being disposed about said body member and extending radially outward therefrom.
- 40. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 38, wherein said sleeve received over the forward section of the body is a front sleeve and wherein said chuck further includes a rear sleeve member fixed to the rearward section of said body member.
- 41. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 40, wherein said front sleeve is plastic and includes gripping ribs on at least a portion of its exterior surface and further wherein said rear sleeve includes a knurled exterior surface.
- 42. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 38, wherein said sleeve member extends to the rearward section of said body.
- 43. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 38, wherein said threaded ring includes an annular collar having a threaded inner diameter and an annulus non-rotatably engaged with said annular collar, said at least one drive rib receiving portion being defined in said annulus.
- 44. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 43, wherein said annulus is a separate component from said annular collar.
- 45. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 43, wherein said annular collar is a split nut, said split nut being maintained together about said body by said annulus.
- 46. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 43, wherein said at least one drive rib receiving portion comprises a series of engaging teeth defined on said annulus.
- 47. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 38, wherein said body includes a groove formed in its forward section and said retaining member is received in said groove.
- 48. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver as in claim 38, wherein said retaining member maintains said front sleeve in place by direct contact between said front sleeve and said forward section of said body.
