Claims
- 1. A non-pungent ornamental pepper plant comprising peppers which have capsaicin levels which are statistically equal to or less than the capsaicin levels of peppers from a commercial sweet green pepper cultivar at the α=0.05 confidence level.
- 2. The ornamental pepper plant of claim 1 comprising a gene complex which confers non-pungency and ornamental phenotypes to said plant.
- 3. The ornamental pepper plant of claim 1, wherein the plant has a pedigree which includes the plant 96P601.
- 4. The ornamental pepper plant of claim 1, wherein the plant has a pedigree which includes the plant 96P631.
- 5. The ornamental pepper plant of claim 1, wherein the plant has a pedigree which includes the plant 96P610.
- 6. The ornamental pepper plant of claim 1, wherein the plant has a pedigree which includes the plant 97P1938.
- 7. Seed of the plant of claim 1.
- 8. Pollen of the plant of claim 1.
- 9. An ovule of the plant of claim 1.
- 10. A tissue culture comprising regenerable cells of the plant of claim 1.
- 11. A cutting of the plant of claim 1.
- 12. Ornamental pepper seed comprising a gene complex which confers non-pungency and ornamental phenotypes on an ornamental pepper plant grown from said seed.
- 13. The seed of claim 12, wherein the seed has a pedigree which includes the plant 96P601.
- 14. The seed of claim 12, wherein the seed has a pedigree which includes the plant 96P631.
- 15. The seed of claim 12, wherein the seed has a pedigree which includes the plant 96P610.
- 16. The seed of claim 12, wherein the seed has a pedigree which includes the plant 97P1938.
- 17. A non-pungent ornamental plant produced by growing the seed of claim 12.
- 18. A non-pungent ornamental pepper having capsaicin levels which are statistically equal to or less than the capsaicin levels of peppers from a commercial sweet green pepper cultivar at the α=0.05 confidence level.
- 19. The ornamental pepper of claim 16 further comprising a gene complex which confers non-pungency and ornamental phenotypes on the ornamental pepper.
- 20. A method for transferring a non-pungency gene from non-pungent sweet pepper plant to a pungent ornamental pepper plant, the method comprising the steps of:
a. crossing a sweet pepper plant comprising a gene for non-pungency with a pungent ornamental pepper plant; b. collecting seeds resulting from the cross in step a; c. regenerating the seeds into plants; and d. selecting non-pungent ornamental pepper plants which contain a gene complex conferring non-pungency and an ornamental phenotype.
- 21. The method of claim 20, further comprising the steps of crossing the plants in step d with non-pungent ornamental peppers containing a gene complex which confers non-pungency and an ornamental phenotype or sweet pepper plants having desirable phenotypic traits for a sufficient number of generations to obtain non-pungent ornamental pepper plants which contain the gene complex conferring non-pungency and ornamental phenotypes.
- 22. Non-pungent ornamental pepper seeds and plants and succeeding generations thereof grown from seeds deposited under ATCC Accession number 203779 and ornamental pepper seeds and plants to which the gene complex conferring non-pungency and ornamental phenotypes is transferred from the deposited seeds in succeeding generations thereof.
