BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Technological Field
The present disclosure relates to a carton, and more particularly to a non-rectangular carton for transporting or displaying products.
Description of Related Art
The present disclosure relates to shipping containers, in particular shipping containers that are fabricated at least in part from paper, paperboard and/or corrugated paperboard material. The present disclosure also relates to such containers that are: 1) erected as a wraparound sheet around the group of products being packaged, with the group of products being placed on the blank forming the wrapper before articulation has begun, or at least well before articulation of the container has been completed; or 2) erected as a tray, wherein the flat blank is formed into a tray container having the minor flaps adhered to the side panels.
The conventional methods and systems have generally been considered satisfactory for their intended purpose. However, there is still a need in the art for a carton having improved structural integrity and stacking performance. There also remains a need in the art for such containers that are economically viable. The present disclosure may provide a solution for at least one of these remaining challenges.
SUMMARY
A container and carton blank for the packaging and displaying of articles includes an interior space defined by a folded carton, wherein the carton blank includes a bottom panel defining a longitudinal axis and a transverse axis and including at least four obtuse angles defined by an inner perimeter thereof, a front panel hingedly attached to a front edge of the bottom panel, a top panel including at least four obtuse angles attached to a front edge of the front panel, a first side panel hingedly attached to a top edge of the bottom panel, a second side panel hingedly attached to a bottom edge of the bottom panel, a third side panel hingedly attached to a top edge of the top panel, a fourth side panel hingedly attached to a bottom edge of the top panel, wherein each side panel includes at least four sections attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis, a first cutout within the carton defined by edges of the bottom panel, edges of the back panel, edges of the top panel, edges of the first side panel, and edges of the third side panel, and a second cutout defined by edges of the bottom panel, edges of the back panel, edges of the top panel, edges of the second side panel, and edges of the fourth side panel.
The bottom panel can be elongated along the transverse axis. Each of the bottom panel and top panels can include eight obtuse angles defined by an inner perimeter thereof. The first side panel and the second side panel can each include five distinct sections, wherein the five distinct sections of each of the side panels define four obtuse angles facing the interior space.
A rear panel can be hingedly attached to a rear edge of the bottom panel, a retention flap hingedly attached to a rear edge of the rear panel, and a front end panel can be hingedly attached to a front edge of the top panel, wherein a combination of widths of the front end panel and the rear panel can be less than a width of the front panel.
A retention flap can be hingedly attached to a rear edge of the bottom panel and a rear panel hingedly attached to a front edge of the top panel. The third side panel can at least partially cover a portion of the first side panel, and the fourth side panel can at least partially cover a portion of the second side panel.
The top panel can include a tear-away section, wherein the tear-away section includes a portion of a panel adjacent to the top panel. An intermediate section of each of the side panel can extend greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section of each corresponding side panel.
These and other features of the systems and methods of the subject disclosure will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments taken in conjunction with the drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Reference will now be made to the drawings wherein like reference numerals identify similar structural features or aspects of the subject disclosure. For purposes of explanation and illustration, and not limitation, a partial view of an exemplary embodiment of a container in accordance with the disclosure is shown in FIGS. 1a-1c and is designated generally by reference character 100. Other embodiments of the container and a blank for forming the container in accordance with the disclosure, or aspects thereof, are provided in FIGS. 2a-9c, as will be described. The system of the disclosure can be used to improve stacking ability and structural integrity of the product containers.
FIG. 1a shows a container 100 for the packaging and displaying of articles. FIG. 1b shows the container 100 open showing an interior space 102 defined by a folded carton blank 104. FIG. 1c shows the carton blank 104 having a bottom panel 106 defining a longitudinal axis 108 and a transverse axis 109 and includes four obtuse angles (122a2, 122a4, 122a6, 122a8) defined by an inner perimeter 122 thereof. A front panel 124 is hingedly attached to a front edge 126 of the bottom panel 106. A top panel 128 which includes four obtuse angles (122b2, 122b4, 122b6, 122b3) is attached to a front edge 130 of the front panel 124. A first side panel 123 is hingedly attached to a top edge 125 of the bottom panel 106; a second side 127 panel is hingedly attached to a bottom edge 129 of the bottom panel 106; a third side panel 133 is hingedly attached to a top edge 132 of the top panel 128; and a fourth side panel 134 is hingedly attached to a bottom edge 136 of the top panel 128. Each side panel 123, 127, 133, 134 includes four sections (123a-123d, 127a-127d, 133a-133d, 134a-134d) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 108. The four distinct sections 123a-123d, 127a-127d, 133a-133d, 134a-134d of each of the side panels define four obtuse angles facing the interior space and two right angles shown on FIG. 1b.
FIG. 1a further shows a first rear flap 160 hingedly attached to a front edge 161 of the top panel 128 and a second rear flap 162 hingedly attached to a rear edge 163 of the bottom panel. Each of the rear flaps 160, 162 attach to an ending sections 123a, 127a of the first side panel 123 and second side panel 127. The ending section 133d, 134d of the third 133 and fourth 134 side panels wrap around and cover the rear flaps 160, 162. The resulting container 100 is hexagonal and includes a viewing slot 166 for partially displaying products located on the inside.
FIG. 1c further shows a first cutout 136 located within the carton blank 104 is defined by a diagonal edge 138 of the bottom panel 106, a top edge 140 of the front panel 124, a diagonal edge 142 of the top panel 128, a bottom edge 144 of the first side panel 123, and a bottom edge 146 of the third side panel 133. A second cutout 137 is located within the carton blank 104 and is defined by a diagonal edge 139 of the bottom panel 106, a bottom edge 149 of the front panel 124, a diagonal edge 143 of the top panel 128, a top edge 145 of the second side panel 127, and a bottom edge 147 of the fourth side panel 134. The cutouts 136 and 137 are trapezoidal. The top panel 128 and bottom panel 106 are elongated along the transverse axis 109. The length of the bottom panel 106 and the top panel 128 along the longitudinal axis 108 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along the longitudinal axis 108 than the length of each side panel in entirety.
FIG. 2a shows a container 200 for the packaging and displaying of articles. FIG. 2b shows the carton container 200 open showing an interior space 202 defined by a folded carton blank 204. FIG. 2c shows the carton blank 204 having a top panel 206 defining a longitudinal axis 208 and a transverse axis 209 and includes eight obtuse angles (222a2, 222a3, 222a4, 222a5, 222a6, 222a7, 222a8, 222a9) defined by an inner perimeter 222 thereof. A front panel 224 is hingedly attached to a front edge 226 of the top panel 206. A bottom panel 228 which includes eight obtuse angles (222b2, 222b3, 222b4, 222b5, 222b6, 222b7, 222b8, 222b9) is attached to a front edge 230 of the front panel 224. A first side panel 223 is hingedly attached to a top edge 225 of the top panel 206; a second side 227 panel is hingedly attached to a bottom edge 229 of the top panel 206; a third side panel 233 is hingedly attached to a top edge 232 of the bottom panel 228; and a fourth side panel 234 is hingedly attached to a bottom edge 236 of the bottom panel 228. Each side panel 223, 227, 233, 234 includes five sections (223a-223e, 227a-227e, 233a-233e, 234a-234e) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 208. The five distinct sections (223a-223e, 227a-227e, 233a-233e, and 234a-234e) of each of the side panel define eight obtuse angles facing the interior space 202.
FIG. 2c further shows a first rear flap 260 hingedly attached to a front edge of the bottom panel 228 and a second rear flap 262 hingedly attached to a rear edge 263 of the top 206 panel. The first rear flap 260 is larger than the second rear flap 262. The second rear flap 262 is folded over the first rear flap 260 in an overlay position when erected and adhered to it. When erected rear flap 260 is sandwiched between and adhered to four ending sections 223a, 227a of the first 223 and second side panels 227 and ending sections 233e, 234e of the third 233 and fourth 234 side panel. Ending panel 233e and 234e are folded and located inside of end panel 260 and end section 223a and 227a when folded wrap around and partially cover the outside of rear flap 260. Rear panel 262 is attached to the outside of rear panel 260. The resulting container 200 includes an octagonal footprint as shown in FIG. 2b. The Front Panel 224 is also sandwiched between ending sections 233a/234a and 223e/227e similar to the way the first rear flap 260 is sandwiched between ending sections 233e/234e and 223a/227a.
FIG. 2c further shows trapezoidal cutouts 236 and 237. The bottom panel 228 and top panels 206 are elongated along the transverse axis 209. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (223, 227, 233, 234), and the length of the bottom panel 206 and the bottom panel 228 along the longitudinal axis 208 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along the longitudinal axis 208 than the length of each side panel in entirety.
FIG. 3a shows a container 300 for the packaging and displaying of articles. FIG. 3b shows the container 300 open showing an interior space 302 defined by a folded carton blank 304. FIG. 3c shows the carton blank 304 having a top panel 306 defining a longitudinal axis 308 and a transverse axis 309 and includes eight obtuse angles (322a2, 322a3, 322a4, 322a5, 322a6, 322a7, 322a8, 322a9) defined by an inner perimeter 322 thereof. A front panel 324 is hingedly attached to a front edge 326 of the top panel 306. A bottom panel 328 which includes eight obtuse angles (322a2, 322a3, 322a4, 322a5, 322a6, 322a7, 322a8, 322a9) is attached to a front edge 330 of the front panel 324. Each side panel 323, 327, 333, 334 includes five sections (323a-323e, 327a-327e, 333a-333e, 334a-334e) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 308. The five distinct sections of each of the side panels define eight obtuse angles facing the interior space.
FIG. 3c further shows a first rear flap 360 hingedly attached to a front edge 360a of the bottom panel 328 and a second rear flap 362 hingedly attached to a front edge 363 of the first rear flap 360. The second rear flap 362 attaches to the underside of the top panel 306 when erected. The ending section 333e and 334e are folded to sit inside the rear flaps 360, 362. The ending sections 327a and 323a wrap around and close in the first rear flap 360. Front Panel 324 is sandwiched between with ending sections 333a/334a and 323e/327e. The resulting container 300 includes an octagonal footprint as shown in FIG. 3b.
FIG. 3c further shows trapezoidal cutouts 336 and 337. The bottom panel 328 and top panels 306 are elongated along the transverse axis 309. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (323, 327, 333, 334), and the length of the top panel 306 and the bottom panel 328 along the longitudinal axis 308 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along the longitudinal axis 308 than the length of each side panel in entirety.
FIG. 4a shows a container 400 for the packaging and displaying of articles. FIG. 4b shows the carton container 400 on a side defined by a folded carton blank 404. FIG. 4c shows the carton blank 404 having a top panel 406 defining a longitudinal axis 408 and a transverse axis 409 and includes four obtuse angles (422a2, 422a3, 422a4, 422a5) defined by an inner perimeter 422 thereof. A front panel 424 is hingedly attached to a front edge 426 of the top panel 406. A bottom panel 428 which includes four obtuse angles (422b2, 422b3, 422a4, 422b5) is attached to a front edge 430 of the front panel 424. Side panels 423 and 427 includes four sections (423a-423d, 427a-427d,) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 408 and side panels 433, 434 include five sections (433a-433e, 434a-434e) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 408. FIG. 4c further shows a first rear flap 460 hingedly attached to a front edge 461 of the bottom panel 428 and a second rear flap 462 hingedly attached to a rear edge 463 of the top panel 406. Side panels 433 and 434 are attached to the bottom panel 428 and form an inside cavity of the carton. Sections 433a and 434a when folded, reside inward of front panel 424 and Sections 433e and 434e when folded, reside inward of rear panel 460. These sections are adhered to front panel 424 and rear panel 460 forming the interior cavity (not shown). When the top panel 406 and first 423 and second 427 side panels are folded down, sections 423a, 427a are folded to the outside of rear panel 460 and adhered to it. Likewise rear panel 462 is folded to the outside of rear panel 460 and adhered to it. Similarly sections 423d and 427d are wrapped around the outside of front panel 424 and adhered to it. The resulting container 400 includes a hexagonal footprint as show in in FIG. 4b.
FIG. 4c further shows trapezoidal cutouts 436 and 437. The bottom panel 428 and bottom panels 406 are elongated along the transverse axis 409. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (423, 427, 433, 434), and the length of the top panel 406 and the bottom panel 428 along the longitudinal axis 408 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along the longitudinal axis 408 than the length of each side panel in entirety. Cutout 473 is intended to create a space for a nozzle or spout to be introduced in the resulting space when removed.
FIG. 5a shows a container 500 for the packaging and displaying of articles. FIG. 5b shows the container 500 open showing an interior space 502 defined by a folded carton blank 504. FIG. 5c shows the carton blank 504 having a top panel 506 defining a longitudinal axis 508 and a transverse axis 509 and includes eight interior obtuse angles defined by an inner perimeter 522 thereof. A front panel 524 is hingedly attached to a front edge 526 of the top panel 506. A bottom panel 528 which includes eight obtuse angles is attached to a front edge 530 of the front panel 524. The panels 523 and 527 include four sections (523a-523d and 527a-527d) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 508. The panels 533 and 534 includes five sections (533a-533e 534a-534e) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 508. The end panels (d) includes two obtuse angles (580/582, 584/586, 588/590, 594/596), formed by an inner perimeter 573, 574, 575, and 576 of each respective panel.
FIG. 5c further shows a first rear flap 560 hingedly attached to a front edge 561 of the top panel and a second rear flap 562 hingedly attached to a front edge 563 of the first rear flap 560 panel. Sections 533e and 534e are folded to the inside of the rear 560 panel and are adhered to it. Sections 533d and 534d, according to FIG. 5c, fold to the inside of front panel 524 and are adhered to it. Sections 523d and 527d are folded to the outside of the front panel 524 and adhered to it, there by sandwiching the front panel 524 between sections 523d and 527d to the outside and sections 533d and 534d to the inside.
FIG. 5c further shows cutouts 536 and 537 each including seven sides. The bottom panel 528 and top panels 506 are elongated along the transverse axis 509. The intermediate sections (b) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (523, 527, 533, 534) and the length of the top panel 506 and the bottom panel 528 along the longitudinal axis 508 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along the longitudinal axis 508 than the length of each side panel in entirety. The container 500 includes a tear away section 550. The tear away section 550 can be located on the top panel 506 and a portion of the front panel 524. The tear away section 550 includes a triangular portion 540 located on the front panel 524. The angles (580/582, 584/586, 588/590, 594/596) align with the triangular portion located on the front panel 524 in order to not have portions of the side panels protruding into a cutout created by the tear away section 550.
FIG. 6a shows a container 600 for the packaging and displaying of articles. FIG. 6b shows the carton container 600 open showing an interior space 602 defined by a folded carton blank 604. FIG. 6c shows the carton blank 604 having a top panel 606 defining a longitudinal axis 608 and a transverse axis 609 and includes four obtuse angles (622a2, 622a3, 622a4, 622a5) defined by an inner perimeter 622 thereof. A front panel 624 is hingedly attached to a front edge 626 of the top panel 606. A bottom panel 628 which includes four obtuse angles (622b2, 622b3, 622b4, 622b5) is attached to a front edge 638 of the front panel 624. Each side panel 623, 627, 633, 634 includes four sections (623a-623d, 627a-627d, 633a-633d, 634a-634d) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 608. The four distinct sections 623a-623d, 627a-627d, 633a-633d, 634a-634d of each of the side panels define four obtuse angles facing the interior space and two right angles.
FIG. 6c further shows a first rear flap 660 hingedly attached to a front edge 670 of the bottom panel and a second rear flap 662 hingedly attached to a front edge 663 of the first rear flap 660. Ending sections 633d and 634d are folded to the inside of first rear flap 660 and adhered to it. Sections 623a and 627a, when folded, wrap around the outside surface of rear flap 660 and are adhered to it. Rear flap 662 is folded to the inside of top panel 606. When first and second side panels 623 and 627 are folded down over side panels 633 and 634, sections 623d and 627d wrap around to the outside of front panel 624 and are adhered to it. The resulting container 600 is hexagonal, with the second rear flap 662 within the interior space 602.
FIG. 6c further shows trapezoidal cutouts 636 and 637. The bottom panel 628 and top panel 606 are elongated along the transverse axis 609. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (623, 627, 633, 634), and the length of the top panel 606 and the bottom panel 628 along the longitudinal axis 608 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along the longitudinal axis 608 than the length of each side panel in entirety.
FIG. 7a shows a container 700 for the packaging and displaying of articles. FIG. 7b shows the carton container 700 open showing an interior space 702 defined by a folded carton blank 704. FIG. 7c shows the carton blank 704 having a top panel 706 defining a longitudinal axis 708 and a transverse axis 709 and includes four obtuse angles (722a2, 722a3, 722a4, 722a5) defined by an inner perimeter 722 thereof. A front panel 724 is hingedly attached to a front edge 726 of the top panel 706. A bottom panel 728 which includes four obtuse angles (722b2, 722b3, 722b4, 722b5) is attached to a front edge 730 of the front panel 724. A first side panel 723 is hingedly attached to a top edge 725 of the top panel 706; a second side 727 panel is hingedly attached to a bottom edge 729 of the top panel 706; a third side panel 733 is hingedly attached to a top edge 732 of the bottom panel 728; and a fourth side panel 734 is hingedly attached to a bottom edge 736 of the bottom panel 728. Each side panel 723, 727, 733, 734 includes four sections (723a-723d, 727a-727d, 733a-733d, 734a-734d) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 708. The four distinct sections 723a-723d, 727a-727d, 733a-733d, 734a-734d of each of the side panels define four obtuse angles facing the interior space and two right angles.
FIG. 7c further shows a first rear flap 760 hingedly attached to a front edge 770 of the bottom panel 728 and a second rear flap 762 hingedly attached to a rear edge 763 of the top panel 706. Sections 733d and 734d are folded to sit inside of the 760 rear panel. When the top panel 706 is folded horizontally, panel 762 is folded to the outside of rear panel 760 and adhered to it. The resulting container 700 includes a hexagonal footprint as shown in in FIG. 7b.
FIG. 7c further shows trapezoidal cutouts 736 and 737. The bottom panel 728 and bottom panels 706 are elongated along the transverse axis 709. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (723, 727, 733, 734), and the length of the top panel 706 and the bottom panel 728 along the longitudinal axis 708 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along the longitudinal axis 708 than the length of each side panel in entirety.
FIG. 8a shows a container 800 for the packaging and displaying of articles. FIG. 8b shows the carton container 800 open showing an interior space 802 defined by a folded carton blank 804. FIG. 8c shows the carton blank 804 having a top panel 806 defining a longitudinal axis 808 and a transverse axis 809 and includes eight obtuse angles (822a2, 822a3, 822a4, 822a5, 822a6, 822a7, 822a8, 822a9) defined by an inner perimeter 822 thereof. A front panel 824 is hingedly attached to a front edge 826 of the top panel 806. A bottom panel 828 which includes eight obtuse angles (822b2, 822b3, 822b4, 822b5, 822b6, 822b7, 822b8, 822b9) is attached to a front edge 830 of the front panel 824. The side panels 823 and 827 include four sections (823a-823d, 827a-827d) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 808. The side panels 833 and 834 include five sections (833a-833e, 834a-834e) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 808.
FIG. 8c further shows a first rear flap 860 hingedly attached to a front edge 861 of the bottom 828 panel and a second rear flap 862 hingedly attached to a rear edge 863 of the top panel 806. Ending sections 833e and 834e are folded to sit inside of rear flaps 860 and 862 and are adhered to them. End sections 833a and 834a are folded to sit inside front panel 824 and are adhered to it. Ending sections 823d and 827d, when folded are attached to the outside of front panel 824 and are adhered to it. The resulting container 800 includes an octagonal footprint as shown in in FIG. 8b.
FIG. 8c further shows trapezoidal cutouts 836 and 837. The bottom panel 828 and top panel 806 are elongated along the transverse axis 809. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (823, 827, 833, 834), and the length of the top panel 806 and the bottom panel 828 along the longitudinal axis 808 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along the longitudinal axis 808 than the length of each side panel in entirety. FIG. 8c shows the container 800 having a tear-away section 850. The tear-away section 850 is located on the top panel 806, and also include eight obtuse angles and include a portion of the second rear flap 862.
FIG. 9a shows a container 900 for the packaging and displaying of articles. FIG. 9b shows the carton container 900 open showing an interior space 902 defined by a folded carton blank 904. FIG. 9c shows the carton blank 904 having a top panel 906 defining a longitudinal axis 908 and a transverse axis 909 and includes eight obtuse angles defined by an inner perimeter 922 thereof. A front panel 924 is hingedly attached to a front edge 926 of the top panel 906. A bottom panel 928 which includes eight obtuse angles is attached to a front edge 930 of the front panel 924. The side panels 923 and 927 include four sections (923a-923d, 927a-927d) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 908. The side panels 933 and 934 include five sections (933a-933e, 934a-934e) attached hingedly along the longitudinal axis 908.
FIG. 9c further shows a first rear flap 960 hingedly attached to a front edge 961 of the top panel and a second rear flap 962 hingedly attached to a rear edge 963 of the bottom panel. Ending sections 933e and 934e are folded to sit inside of and adhered to rear flap 960. End sections 933a and 934a are folded to sit inside front panel 924 and are adhered to it. Ending sections 923d and 927d, when folded are attached to the outside of front panel 924 and are adhered to it. When top panel 906 is folded to a horizontal plane, rear panel 962 is fold to the outside of rear panel 960 and adhered to it.
FIG. 9c further shows trapezoidal cutouts 936 and 937. The bottom panel 928 and top panels 906 are elongated along the transverse axis 909. The intermediate sections (c) of each of the side panels extends greater along the longitudinal axis than an end-section (a/d) of each corresponding side panel (923, 927, 933, 934), and the length of the top panel 906 and the bottom panel 928 along the longitudinal axis 908 than any of the individual sections (a-d), but is shorter along the longitudinal axis 908 than the length of each side panel in entirety.
The methods and systems of the present disclosure, as described above and shown in the drawings, provide for a carton with superior stacking and footprint, by offering more vertical corner structures.
