The present invention generally relates to a nosing installed on a stair having non-skid properties.
The present invention relates to a nosing for installation on a stair. Conventional nosings wrap around the edge of the stair. The present invention provides a nosing having non-skid properties.
In an embodiment of the present invention, a stair nosing is provided. The nosing includes a generally flat portion having a first side and a second side. The nosing also includes a bent portion extending along the first side of the flat portion. The bent portion includes an arcuate section and a vertical section. The arcuate section includes a first plurality of non-skid members.
In another embodiment of the present invention, a stair nosing formed from a blank of material is provided. The blank includes a first side and a second side. The blank is also bent along the first side to form a flat portion, an arcuate portion and a vertical section. A plurality of cutouts is located along the arcuate portion. The cutouts are adapted to form a first plurality of non-skid members.
To understand the present invention, it will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
While this invention is susceptible of embodiments in many different forms, there is shown in the drawings and will herein be described in detail preferred embodiments of the invention with the understanding that the present disclosure is to be considered as an exemplification of the principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the broad aspect of the invention to the embodiments illustrated.
Referring to the Figures, a stair nosing 10 in accord with an embodiment of the present invention is shown. The stair nosing 10 is preferably made from metal such as steel, but can be made from any suitable material. The nosing 10 includes a generally flat portion 12. The flat portion 12 includes a first side 14 and a second side 16. Along the first side 14 is a bent portion 18. The bent portion 18 includes an arcuate or bent section 20 and a vertical section 22. The arcuate section 20 includes a plurality of non-skid members 24.
The generally flat portion 12 is adapted to rest atop and be attached to a stair 26. The arcuate section 20 is adapted to wrap around a nosing or leading edge 28 of the stair 26. The generally flat portion 12 can include a plurality of raised portions 30 to provide a non-skid surface.
In an embodiment, the non-skid members 24 include a plurality of semi-circular cutouts 32. The cutouts 32 each have an upwardly extending tab 34 to provide a non-skid surface for climbing or descending the stairs 26. The cutouts 32 may be of any suitable shape, including triangular or trapezoidal. The corresponding tabs 34 will also have this shape.
The nosing 10 is formed from a blank 36. In an embodiment, the blank 36 includes a first side 38 and a second side 40. The blank 36 also includes a plurality of semicircular cutouts 42 along the first side 38. When bent along a line 44, the cutouts 42 form non-skid members or tabs 34. The blank 36 may also include a plurality of raised portions or dimples 46 to form a non-skid surface. The blank 36 also includes holes 48 to attach the nosing 10 by fasteners such as screws to a stair as shown in
While the specific embodiments have been illustrated and described, numerous modifications come to mind without significantly departing from the spirit of the invention, and the scope of protection is only limited by the scope of the accompanying Claims.
