Claims
- 1. Apparatus for transferring a design from a first surface to a second surface by intimate rolling non-slip contact of said surfaces along a line in contact shared therebetween comprising:
- said first surface having a first center and a selected radius of curvature extending therefrom which is colinear with the line of contact,
- means for carrying the first of said surfaces about a second fixed center of rotation which is offset from said first center,
- means for rotatably carrying the second surface about an axis of rotation,
- said second surface having a surface ray lying thereon defining a line including the line of contact,
- said line intersecting the axis of rotation at a point corresponding to an apex of said second surface,
- and means for orienting one surface relative to the other, such that when said surfaces are engaged, the ray of said second surface along the line of contact between the surfaces is colinear with the radius of curvature of the first surface, and said radius of curvature has a center coincident with the apex of the second surface.
- 2. Apparatus for transferring a design from a transferring surface to a receiving surface which comprises;
- said transferring surface having an arcuate shape with a first radius of curvature about a first center,
- means for rotating said arcuate transferring surface with a second radius of curvature about a second center offset from said first center,
- means for rotating said receiving surface about an axis of rotation,
- said receiving surface having a surface ray lying thereon defining a line intersecting said axis of rotation at a point corresponding to an apex of said receiving surface,
- said ray including a line of contact shared between said transferring and receiving surfaces when in intimate transfer contact,
- said line of contact being colinear with said first radius of curvature,
- and means for orienting the apex of said receiving surface so as to follow and be coincident with said first center as it is rotated about said second center.
- 3. Apparatus for transferring a design from a transferring surface to a receiving surface as defined in claim 2 wherein said means for orienting said receiving surface includes a contact axis extending normal to said line of contact at a central point thereof and about which said receiving surface is rotatable through said orienting means.
- 4. Apparatus for transferring a design from a transferring surface to a receiving surface as defined in claim 3 wherein said axis of rotation and said line of contact lie in the same plane, and wherein said contact axis, about which the receiving surface is rotatable, is also within said plane.
- 5. Apparatus for transferring a design from a transferring surface to a receiving surface as defined in claim 3 wherein said means for orienting said receiving surface simultaneously translates said receiving surface radially along said second radius of curvature and rotates said receiving surface about said contact axis.
- 6. Apparatus for transferring a design from a transferring surface to a receiving surface as defined in claim 2 wherein said means for orienting said receiving surface simultaneously laterally translates and rotates said receiving surface relative to said transferring surface, and said surface ray is aligned with said first radius of curvature during such translation and rotation of the receiving surface to thereby provide for non-slip rolling motion between said surfaces.
- 7. Apparatus for transferring a design from a transferring surface to a receiving surface as defined in claim 2 wherein said surface ray is in radial alignment with said second radius of curvature when said ray passes through a circumferential midpoint of said arcuate transferring surface.
- 8. An apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the means for orienting the apex of said receiving surface includes means for effecting translational motion of the receiving surface relative to the transferring surface.
- 9. An apparatus as set forth in claim 8 wherein the means for effecting translational motion includes camming means responsive to the instantaneous position of the transferring means, having at least one profile related to circumferential geometry of the receiving surface, the camming means being operatively coupled to the receiving surface for translating same in accordance with the position of the transferring surface.
- 10. An apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the means for orienting the receiving surface relative to the transferring surface includes means for effecting rotational motion of the receiving surface about a point along the line of contact shared by the said surfaces.
- 11. An apparatus as set forth in claim 10 wherein the means for effecting rotational motion includes camming means responsive to the position of the transferring surface having at least one profile related to the axial geometry of the receiving surface said camming means being operatively coupled to the receiving surface for rotating same about said point in accordance with the position of the transferring surface.
- 12. An apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein the means for orienting the receiving surface includes barrel cam means responsive to the position of the transferring surface coupled to an indexing means for positioning the indexing means through various positions from load to eject.
- 13. An apparatus as set forth in claim 12 wherein the means for orienting the receiving surface includes: drive means synchronously responsive to the position of the transferring surface, and splined connector means coupling the drive means and barrel cam means said splined connector means adapted to reciprocate between extreme positions as said article is oriented in conformance with the position of the transferring surface.
- 14. An apparatus as set forth in claim 13 further including: a pair of universal joint means coupling opposite ends of the splined connector means between the drive means and barrel cam means for accommodating at least one of radial and circumferential motion of said indexing means.
- 15. Apparatus for transferring a design to a receiving surface of an article by intimate contact of the design thereagainst comprising:
- a transferring surface for carrying the design;
- respective means for carrying the transferring surface and the receiving surface of the article into engagement with each other;
- means for orienting the receiving surface relative to the design into intimate nonslip rolling contact along a line of contact shared between the surfaces to effect the transfer of the design, such that, a respective center of the transferring surface and an apex of the receiving surface instantaneously coincide during engagement;
- said means for orienting the receiving surface relative to the design including indexing means for carrying the receiving surface to be decorated, said indexing means sequentially positionable for load, print, idle, and eject positions about an axis;
- means for holding the article into engagement with said indexing means from the load through eject positions;
- said means for holding the article including a vacuum chuck adapted to engage a portion of the article for securing it in the indexing means;
- said article being a hollow object having an open end with a sealable peripheral margin;
- and the means for holding the article includes, a source of reduced air pressure, a pad for sealably engaging the peripheral margin of the opening, and a pin sleevably located in an opening in said pad, said pin having a distal end for engaging an interior portion of said article and being depressable thereby, a proximal end located in a position interior of the article when sealably engaged therewith, and a relieved portion near the proximal end in the opening of the pad, foot valve means near the proximal end of said pin being coupled to said source of reduced air pressure for communicating same through said relived portion in the pin when said pin is depressed by engagement with the interior of the object,
- and said foot valve being opened to supply the reduced air pressure while the article sealably engages the pad at its peripheral margin.
- 16. An apparatus as set forth in claim 15 wherein the indexing means further includes selectable means having an aperture therein in intermediate communication with the foot valve and the source of reduced air pressure for selectively communicating the foot valve therewith during the load, print and idle stations thereof.
- 17. An apparatus as set forth in claim 16 further including spring biasing means operatively coupled to the pin for urging same distally of the pad when out of engagement with the article for maintaining said foot valve closed.
- 18. An apparatus as set forth in claim 17 further including a source of positive air pressure and wherein the selectable means has an aperture in intermediate communication with said source of positive pressure and the foot valve at the eject station for supplying blowoff air for ejecting the article from the pad.
- 19. A printing apparatus for transferring a design onto a receiving surface portion of an article by intimate line contact of the design thereagainst comprising:
- means for carrying the design about a first center,
- said design being formed about a second center offset from said first center,
- means for aligning the design receiving surface portion of the article into intimate non-slip rolling-like contact with said design,
- and means operably governing the aligning means for producing a translational motion along a radius extending from said first center and a rotational motion about an axis perpendicular to the contact line of the design receiving surface portion of the article relative to the design.
- 20. A printing apparatus as set forth in claim 19 wherein the article to be printed comprises a web having cylindrical unwind and wind rolls for advancing a quantity of said web therebetween, and a cylindrical backup roll having a relatively hard rubber-like surface portion for engaging a rearward side of the web and for urging the surface portion of said web opposite said rearward side into non-slip rolling-like contact engagement with the design.
- 21. A printing apparatus as set forth in claim 20 wherein the back up roll has a coefficient of friction sufficient to prevent lateral and circumferential slippage between the web and itself.
- 22. A printing apparatus as set forth in claim 19 wherein said means operably governing the orienting means includes a camming means having a profile related to circumferential and axial geometry of the design carrying surface portion for producing translational and rotational motion thereof relative to the design.
- 23. A printing apparatus comprising:
- means for imparting a design onto a surface portion of an article to be decorated,
- the surface portion having a conic section-like geometry having an axis with an apex of the surface portion located thereon,
- said design having a planar surface corresponding to a developed conic section-like geometry defining a first radius of curvature with a first center therefor,
- means for carrying the design in an arcuate path,
- said arcuate path having a second radius of curvature with a second center of rotation offset from said first center,
- means for depositing said design onto the surface portion of the article by intimate non-slip rolling contact over an interval of rotation of one surface relative to the other along a line of contact corresponding to a ray of the article;
- said depositing means including orienting means for rotating the surface portion of the article relative to the design, such that while in contact with one another over the interval of rotation, the design and surface portion have their respective radius of curvature and ray intersecting at a point including the respective first center of the design and the apex of the article;
- and said orienting means including means for carrying said article for rotation about an axial center of rotation and about an axis normal to the surface portion of the article, with said article being rotatable about the normal relative to the arcuate path.
