Claims
- 1. A process for making a fluorinated copolymer having a stable end group, said process comprising contacting fluoroolefin, a comonomer capable of copolymerizing with said fluoroolefin, an initiator capable of producing said stable end groups on said polymer, and a polymerization medium comprising liquid or supercritical carbon dioxide; and copolymerizing said fluoroolefin and said comonomer.
- 2. The process according to claim 1, wherein said fluoroolefin is tetrafluoroethylene.
- 3. The process according to claim 1, wherein said comonomer is a fluorinated comonomer.
- 4. The process according to claim 1, wherein said comonomer contains functionality selected from the group consisting of SO.sub.2 F and CF.sub.2 .dbd.CFO.
- 5. The process according to claim 1, wherein said comonomer contains at least one functional group selected from the group consisting of CF.sub.2 .dbd.CFOCF.sub.2 CF(CF.sub.3)OCF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 SO.sub.2 F; CF.sub.2 .dbd.CFOCF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 SO.sub.2 F; and CF.sub.2 .dbd.CFOCF.sub.2 CF(CF.sub.3)OCF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CO.sub.2 CH.sub.3.
- 6. The process according to claim 1, wherein said polymerization medium comprises liquid carbon dioxide.
- 7. The process according to claim 1, wherein said polymerization medium comprises supercritical carbon dioxide.
- 8. The process according to claim 1, wherein said initiator is selected from the group consisting of chlorinated acyl peroxides, fluorinated acyl peroxides, perfluorinated azo compounds, R.sub.4 N.dbd.NR.sub.4 wherein R.sub.4 is a linear or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 perfluorocarbon, and perfluoralkane radicals.
- 9. The process according to claim 1, further comprising a chain transfer agent.
