Claims
- 1. A receptacle connector subassembly for use in connecting a mating plug having axially spaced plug contacts to an electronic component subassembly, the receptacle connector subassembly comprising:
a receptacle housing partially insertable into a cavity in the electronic component subassembly, the housing receptacle including a plug passage defined by a curved surface, the plug passage comprising means for receiving a mating plug, and a plurality of slots extending axially along the curved surface at arcuately spaced locations along the plug passage; and a plurality of receptacle contacts, individually positioned within corresponding slots, each receptacle contact having a electronic component mating section adjacent one end of the central plug passage and a plug mating section closer to an opposite end of the respective receptacle contact, the plug mating sections of separate receptacle contacts being located at different axial positions in the plug passage so that individual receptacle contacts can each engage aligned ones of the axially spaced plug contacts when the mating plug is inserted into the plug passage of the receptacle housing, so that the mating plug need not be arcuately aligned relative to the individual receptacle contacts.
- 2. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 1 wherein the electronic component mating sections of the receptacle contacts protrude beyond an interior end face on the receptacle housing to which the plug passage extends
- 3. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 2 wherein the plug mating sections of all of the receptacle contacts are located between opposite ends of the plug passage.
- 4. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 1 wherein latching shoulders are located on an exposed end of the receptacle housing, the latching shoulders comprising means engagable with mating plug flexible latches to retain the plug in mated relationship relative to the receptacle subassembly.
- 5. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 4 wherein the latching shoulders comprise a continuous peripheral surface on the receptacle housing.
- 6. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 1 wherein each receptacle contact includes a mounting section between the component mating section and the plug mating section, the mounting section comprising means for engaging interior housing walls defining the slots.
- 7. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 6 wherein the plug mating section comprises a cantilever beam extending from the mounting section to a contact area adjacent one end of the contact.
- 8. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 7 wherein the cantilever beams of different contacts have different lengths.
- 9. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 1 wherein each component mating section comprises a clip having a contact slot for engaging a conductor in the electronic component subassembly.
- 10. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 9 wherein the contact slot on the component mating section of each contact is oriented to engage a conductor extending perpendicular to an axis of the plug passage when the receptacle connector subassembly is positioned within the cavity in the electronic component subassembly.
- 11. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 1 wherein the plug passage comprises a central plug passage defined by an inwardly facing surface with the plurality of receptacle contacts being positioned in the slots and facing inwardly.
- 12. The receptacle connector subassembly of claim 11 wherein the plug passage comprises an annular passage extending around a central cylindrical support defining the cylindrical surface, with the receptacle contacts being positioned in the slots and facing outwardly.
- 13. A nonpolarized electrical connector for use in transmitting electrical signals on at least two signal lines to and from an electronic component, comprising a plug connector subassembly and a receptacle connector subassembly, the plug connector subassembly being insertable into mating relationship with the receptacle connector subassembly along a mating axis; the plug connector subassembly having plug contacts axially spaced on a single protruding member; the receptacle connector subassembly comprising a receptacle housing insertable into mating engagement with the electronic component and including means for keying the receptacle housing relative to the electronic component, the receptacle connector assembly also including receptacle contacts arcuately spaced in the receptacle housing, the receptacle contacts having contact points, with contact points on separate receptacle contacts being mutually axially offset, whereby the plug connector subassembly can be mated to the receptacle connector subassembly with the plug connector subassembly in any angular orientation relative to the receptacle connector subassembly and relative to the electronic component.
- 14. The nonpolarized electrical connector assembly of claim 13 wherein the plug connector subassembly includes a latch attachable to a latching surface on the receptacle housing for securing the plug connector subassembly to the receptacle connector subassembly.
- 15. The nonpolarized electrical connector assembly of claim 14 wherein the latching surface comprises a continuous circular shoulder so that the plug connector subassembly can be mated to the receptacle connector subassembly in any arcuate position.
- 16. The nonpolarized electrical connector assembly of claim 14 wherein the protruding member comprises a post with plug contacts positioned on an exterior surface of the post.
- 17. The nonpolarized electrical connector assembly of claim 13 wherein protruding member comprises an annular silo with plug contacts positioned on an interior surface of the annular silo.
- 18. A nonpolarized squib electrical connector assembly for use with an airbag inflation initiator, comprising a plug connector subassembly and a receptacle connector subassembly, the plug connector subassembly being insertable into mating relationship with the receptacle connector subassembly along a mating axis; the plug connector subassembly having plug contacts axially spaced on a single protruding member; the receptacle connector subassembly comprising a receptacle housing and receptacle contacts arcuately spaced on the receptacle housing, the receptacle contacts having contact points, with contact points on separate receptacle contacts being mutually axially offset, the receptacle subassembly being matable with the airbag inflation initiator, whereby the plug connector subassembly can be mated to the receptacle connector subassembly in any angular orientation relative to the mating axis.
- 19. The nonpolarized squib electrical connector assembly of claim 18 wherein the plug connector subassembly includes a latch attachable to a latching surface on the receptacle housing for securing the plug connector subassembly to the receptacle connector subassembly.
- 20. A nonpolarized squib electrical connector assembly for use with an airbag inflation initiator, comprising a plug connector and a plurality of receptacle contacts; the plug connector having axially spaced plug contacts on a single protruding member and a latch for securing the plug connector relative to the airbag inflation initiator; separate receptacle contacts being arcuately spaced relative to other receptacle contacts with individual receptacle contacts having contact points axially spaced relative to contact points on other receptacle contacts, the receptacle contacts being matable with the airbag inflation initiator; whereby the plug connector can be mated to the receptacle contacts in any angular orientation.
- 21. A squib electrical connector subassembly for use with an air bag inflation initiator comprising:
a cylindrical receptacle housing with a cylindrical passage extending inwardly from an exterior end of the receptacle housing and defined by a cylindrical surface, the receptacle housing also including slots extending axially along the cylindrical surface from an opposite interior end of the receptacle housing; and a plurality of receptacle contacts insertable in the slots from the second end of the receptacle housing, each receptacle contact having a resilient beam with a contact point on the resilient beam extending into the cylindrical passage.
- 22. The squib electrical connector subassembly of claim 21 wherein the receptacle housing also includes a latching surface adjacent the exterior end of the receptacle housing.
- 23. The squib electrical connector subassembly of claim 22 wherein the cylindrical passage extends between the exterior and the interior end of the cylindrical receptacle housing.
- 24. The squib electrical connector subassembly of claim 21 wherein each receptacle contact includes a squib contact section on a contact end opposite from the resilient beam.
- 25. The squib electrical connector subassembly of claim 24 wherein the squib contact section comprises a resilient contact section.
- 26. The squib electrical connector subassembly of claim 25 wherein the squib contact section comprises a C-channel contact.
- 27. The squib electrical connector subassembly of claim 26 wherein the C-channel contact comprises a contact slot extending into a flat plate from one end of the flat plate.
- 28. The squib electrical connector subassembly of claim 27 wherein the contact slot extends in a receptacle contact axial direction.
- 29. The squib electrical connector subassembly of claim 24 wherein the squib contact section extends beyond an interior end of the receptacle housing.
- 30. The squib electrical connector subassembly of claim 21 wherein contact points on each receptacle contacts are axially offset relative to the contact points of other receptacle contacts.
- 31. A receptacle contact for use in a housing matable with a plug connector, the receptacle contact comprising a resilient beam extending in one direction from a central mounting section and having a contact point spaced from the mounting section, the mounting section comprising means for attaching the receptacle contact in the housing and the resilient beam comprising means for establishing an electrical connection to the plug connector, the receptacle contact also including a resilient component contact section extending in an opposite direction from the central mounting section, the component contact section including a contact slot open to one axial end of the receptacle contact, wherein both the contact slot and the contact point on the resilient beam are offset in the same direction relative to the mounting section so that both the contact point and the contact slot will protrude in the same direction relative to the housing when the receptacle contact in mounted in the housing.
- 32. The receptacle contact of claim 31 wherein the component contact section comprises a C-channel clip comprising means for establishing an electrical connector to a pin extending perpendicular to the receptacle contact.
- 33. The receptacle contact of claim 32 wherein the component contact section comprises two parallel flat plate sections, each having a contact slot, contact slots in the two parallel flat plate sections being aligned.
- 34. The receptacle contact of claim 32 wherein the component contact section comprises a U-shaped section having a central section with end sections folded transversely relative to the central section, the contact slot extending into the central section.
- 35. The receptacle contact of claim 31 wherein the receptacle contact comprises a one piece stamped and formed member.
- 36. A nonpolarized squib plug connector assembly matable with a squib receptacle connector assembly, wherein the squib plug connector assembly comprises:
a plug housing having a silo with an internal passage; and three plug contacts positioned within the internal passage, each plug contact including a cylindrical band contact section, the cylindrical band contact sections of the three plug contacts being stacked in axially spaced relationship within the internal passage, so that the plug contacts are protected by the silo and the squib plug connector assembly can be mated to the squib receptacle connector assembly.
- 37. The nonpolarized squib plug connector assembly of claim 36 wherein adjacent band contact sections are separated by insulating rings.
