Claims
- 1. Process for forming a nonwoven web comprising the steps of:
a. providing a source of fibers and/or filaments; b. subjecting said fibers and/or filaments to an electrostatic charge; c. directing said fibers and/or filaments to a deflector device while said fibers and/or filaments are under the influence of said electrostatic charge; and d. collecting said fibers and/or filaments on a forming surface to form a nonwoven web.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said fibers and/or filaments are provided by melt spinning.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein said meltspun filaments are continuous and subjected to pneumatic draw forces in a fiber draw unit prior to being subjected to said electrostatic charge.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein said deflector device comprises a series of teeth separated by a distance determined by the desired orientation of said fibers and/or filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 5. The process of claim 2 wherein said deflector device comprises a series of teeth separated by a distance determined by the desired orientation of said fibers and/or filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 6. The process of claim 3 wherein said deflector device comprises a series of teeth separated by a distance determined by the desired orientation of said fibers and/or filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 7. The process of claim 4 wherein said teeth are oriented at an angle with respect to said directed fibers and/or filaments, said angle determined by the desired orientation of said fibers and/or filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 8. The process of claim 5 wherein said teeth are oriented at an angle with respect to said directed fibers and/or filaments, said angle determined by the desired orientation of said fibers and/or filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 9. The process of claim 6 wherein said teeth are oriented at an angle with respect to said directed fibers and/or filaments, said angle determined by the desired orientation of said fibers and/or filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 10. The process of claim 1 including the step of reducing or eliminating the charge remaining on said nonwoven web after it has been formed.
- 11. Apparatus for forming a nonwoven web, said apparatus comprising:
a. a source of fibers and/or filaments; b. a device for applying an electrostatic charge to said fibers and/or filaments; c. a deflector device in the path of said fibers and/or filaments and adapted to affect said fibers and/or filaments while said fibers and/or filaments are under the influence of said electrostatic charge; and d. a forming surface for collecting said fibers and/or filaments as a nonwoven web.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said source of fibers and/or filaments is a melt spinning device.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said melt spinning device produces continuous filaments and further including a fiber draw unit applying pneumatic draw forces to said continuous filaments prior to being subjected to said electrostatic charge.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said deflector device comprises a series of teeth separated by a distance determined by the desired orientation of said fibers and/or filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said deflector device comprises a series of teeth separated by a distance determined by the desired orientation of said fibers and/or filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said deflector device comprises a series of teeth separated by a distance determined by the desired orientation of said filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said teeth are oriented at an angle with respect to said directed fibers and/or filaments, said angle determined by the desired orientation of said fibers and/or filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said teeth are oriented at an angle with respect to said directed fibers and/or filaments, said angle determined by the desired orientation of said fibers and/or filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein said teeth are oriented at an angle with respect to said directed fibers and/or filaments, said angle determined by the desired orientation of said filaments in said nonwoven web.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 11 further including mans for reducing or eliminating the charge remaining on said nonwoven web after it has been formed.
- 21. A nonwoven web produced by the process of claim 1.
- 22. A nonwoven web produced by the process of claim 7.
