Claims
- 1. Apparatus operatively connectable as part of a tubing string extending into a subterranean well, the apparatus being of the type having a valve portion thereof operable to selectively permit and prevent fluid flow axially through the tubing string, and the valve portion being of the type which is selectively operable by application of fluid pressure to at least one line exteriorly connected thereto and extending to the earth's surface, the apparatus comprising:
- a housing;
- a first displacement member disposed within the housing, the first member being displaceable in a first direction relative to the housing by fluid pressure in the tubing string; and
- a selection member interconnected to the first displacement member, the selection member being interconnectable to the valve portion, and the selection member being positionable relative to the first displacement member to a selected one of a first position, in which the selection member engages the first displacement member for displacement in the first direction with the first displacement member, and a second position in which the first displacement member is displaceable in the first direction independently of the selection member.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a second displacement member disposed within the housing, the second displacement member being displaceable by fluid pressure in the tubing string.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the selection member is selectively positionable to the selected one of the first and second positions by displacement of the second displacement member.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the second displacement member is selectively displaceable by a selected one of fluid pressure in the tubing string and fluid pressure in a flow passage within the housing.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the second displacement member is displaceable by fluid pressure in the tubing string when fluid pressure in the tubing string exceeds fluid pressure in the flow passage.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the second displacement member is displaceable by fluid pressure in the flow passage when fluid pressure in the flow passage exceeds fluid pressure in the tubing string.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the selection member is slidingly connectable to the valve portion, such that the selection member is engageable with the valve portion to operate the valve portion when the first displacement member displaces in the first direction and the first displacement member is engaged with the selection member.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a gripping structure disposed within the housing.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the gripping structure is capable of grippingly engaging the valve portion in response to fluid pressure in a flow passage formed in the housing.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the gripping structure is capable of grippingly engaging the valve portion to prevent operation of the valve portion to a selected one of permitting and preventing fluid flow axially through the tubing string.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the gripping structure is capable of grippingly engaging the valve portion in response to a selected one of fluid pressure in a flow passage formed in the housing and fluid pressure in the tubing string.
- 12. Apparatus operatively connectable as part of a tubing string extending into a subterranean well, the apparatus comprising:
- a valve portion selectively permitting and preventing fluid flow through the apparatus, the valve portion including an interior axially extending flow passage, a seat disposed adjacent the flow passage, a blocking member selectively displaceable relative to the seat between a first position in which the blocking member sealingly engages the seat to block fluid flow through the flow passage and a second position in which fluid flow through the flow passage is permitted, a first piston interconnected to the blocking member for selectively displacing the blocking member relative to the seat, and a first line in fluid communication with the first piston, fluid pressure in the first line biasing the first piston to displace the blocking member to the second position;
- a second piston interconnectable to the blocking member for selectively displacing the blocking member relative to the seat; and
- a first fluid passage in fluid communication with the second piston and the flow passage, fluid pressure in the first fluid passage biasing the second piston to displace the blocking member to the second position.
- 13. The apparatus according to claim 12, further comprising an indexing device interconnectable between the second piston and the blocking member, the indexing device being selectively indexable between third and fourth positions, the second piston displacing the blocking member to the second position when the indexing device is in the third position, and the second piston being incapable of displacing the blocking member to the second position when the indexing device is in the fourth position.
- 14. The apparatus according to claim 13, further comprising a third piston, and wherein the first fluid passage is in fluid communication with the third piston.
- 15. The apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the third piston is cooperatively engageable with the indexing device, and wherein fluid pressure in the first fluid passage biases the third piston to engage the indexing device for selectively indexing the indexing device between the third and fourth positions.
- 16. The apparatus according to claim 12, further comprising a third piston and a grip member, the grip member being connectable to the first piston to selectively prevent and permit displacement of the first piston, the grip member selectively preventing and permitting displacement of the first piston in response to displacement of the third piston.
- 17. The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein the first fluid passage is in fluid communication with the third piston, fluid pressure in the first fluid passage biasing the third piston to displace.
- 18. The apparatus according to claim 17, wherein the valve is further of the type having a second line connected thereto, wherein the second line is in fluid communication with the first fluid passage when fluid pressure in the second line exceeds fluid pressure in the flow passage, and wherein the flow passage is in fluid communication with the first fluid passage when fluid pressure in the flow passage exceeds fluid pressure in the second line.
- 19. The apparatus according to claim 12, further comprising a third piston, the third piston being axially displaceable relative to a generally tubular member disposed proximate the second piston, wherein one of the third piston and tubular member has a generally circumferentially extending first profile formed thereon, and wherein the other of the third piston and tubular mandrel has a first surface thereon for cooperative engagement with the first profile, such that when the third piston axially displaces relative to the tubular member, the tubular member is axially rotated thereby.
- 20. The apparatus according to claim 19, wherein one of the second piston and tubular member has a second profile formed thereon, wherein the other of the second piston and tubular member has a second surface thereon for cooperative engagement with the second profile, such that when the tubular member is axially rotated by cooperative engagement of the first profile and first surface, the second profile is selectively axially engageable with the second surface.
- 21. The apparatus according to claim 20, wherein the tubular member is axially coupled to the second piston when the second profile is axially engaged with the second surface, and wherein the tubular member is axially displaceable relative to the second piston when the second profile is axially disengaged from the second surface.
- 22. The apparatus according to claim 19, wherein the third piston is biased in a first axial direction relative to the tubular member, displacement of the third piston in the first axial direction axially rotating the tubular member to a first radial position in which the second piston is axially coupled to the blocking member.
- 23. The apparatus according to claim 22, wherein the third piston is in fluid communication with the first fluid passage, and wherein the third piston is biased in a second axial direction opposite to the first axial direction by fluid pressure in the first fluid passage, displacement of the third piston in the second axial direction axially rotating the tubular member to a second radial position in which the second piston is axially decoupled from the blocking member.
- 24. The apparatus according to claim 12, further comprising a second fluid passage, the second fluid passage being in fluid communication with the first fluid passage when fluid pressure in the second fluid passage is at least as great as fluid pressure in the flow passage, and the flow passage being in fluid communication with the first fluid passage when fluid pressure in the flow pressure exceeds fluid pressure in the second fluid passage.
- 25. The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the flow passage is in fluid communication with the first fluid passage when fluid pressure in the flow passage exceeds fluid pressure in the second flow passage by a predetermined amount.
