Claims
- 1. A method of manufacturing ammonium quat-containing raw material composition with improved transportation efficiency and/or processing properties, said method comprising the step of forming a mixture containing the ammonium quat in a solvent that includes at least one glycol and at least one fatty alcohol, wherein said raw material composition has cationic activity of over 35%.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of forming said mixture comprises in situ quaternization of a pre-cursor tertiary amine to produce said ammonium quat.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of forming said mixture comprises mixing said ammonium quat, said at least one glycol, and said at least one fatty alcohol.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein said composition is flakeable.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein said composition is pastillatable.
- 6. The method of claim 4, further comprising flaking said composition.
- 7. The method of claim 5, further comprising pastillating said composition.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in said solvent is greater than the amount of said at least one glycol.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in the solvent is at least 60% by weight.
- 10. The method of claim 8, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in the solvent is at least 75% by weight.
- 11. The method of claim 8, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in the solvent is at least 90% by weight.
- 12. The method of claim 1, wherein said composition has cationic activity of over 50%.
- 13. The method of claim 1, wherein said composition has cationic activity of over 60%.
- 14. The method of claim 1, wherein said ammonium quat is a fatty monoalkyl ammonium quat that includes one fatty chain of between 12 and 36 carbon atoms.
- 15. The method of claim 1, wherein said at least one fatty alcohol is selected from the group consisting of lauryl, myristal, cetyl, stearyl, behenyl, cetearyl fatty alcohols, and mixtures thereof.
- 16. The method of claim 1, wherein said at least one glycol is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylenes glycol, dipropylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and mixtures thereof.
- 17. A method of manufacturing ammonium quat-containing raw material composition with improved transportation efficiency and/or processing properties, said method comprising the steps of forming a mixture containing the ammonium quat in a solvent that includes at least one glycol and at least one fatty alcohol, and flaking or pastillating said mixture.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein said raw material composition has cationic activity of over 35%.
- 19. The method of claim 17, wherein said raw material composition has cationic activity of over 50%.
- 20. The method of claim 17, wherein said raw material composition has cationic activity of over 60%.
- 21. The method of claim 17, wherein said step of forming said mixture comprises in situ quaternization of a pre-cursor tertiary amine to produce said ammonium quat.
- 22. The method of claim 17, wherein said step of forming said mixture comprises mixing said ammonium quat, said at least one glycol and said at least one fatty alcohol.
- 23. The method of claim 17, further comprising melting said mixture.
- 24. The method of claim 17, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in said solvent is greater than the amount of said at least one glycol.
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in the solvent is at least 60% by weight.
- 26. The method of claim 24, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in the solvent is at least 75% by weight.
- 27. The method of claim 24, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in the solvent is at least 90% by weight.
- 28. The method of claim 17, wherein said ammonium quat is a fatty monoalkyl ammonium quat that includes one fatty chain of between 12 and 36 carbon atoms.
- 29. The method of claim 17, wherein said at least one fatty alcohol is selected from the group consisting of lauryl, myristal, cetyl, stearyl, behenyl, cetearyl fatty alcohols, and mixtures thereof.
- 30. The method of claim 17, wherein said at least one glycol is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylenes glycol, dipropylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and mixtures thereof.
- 31. A method of manufacturing ammonium quat-containing composition, said method comprising the step of forming a mixture consisting essentially of the ammonium quat, at least one glycol, and at least one fatty alcohol.
- 32. The method of claim 31, wherein said step of forming said mixture comprises in situ quaternization of a pre-cursor tertiary amine to produce said ammonium quat.
- 33. The method of claim 31, wherein said step of forming said mixture comprises mixing said ammonium quat, said at least one glycol and said at least one fatty alcohol.
- 34. The method of claim 31, wherein said composition is flakeable.
- 35. The method of claim 34, further comprising flaking said composition.
- 36. The method of claim 31, wherein said composition is pastillatable.
- 37. The method of claim 36, further comprising pastillating said composition.
- 38. The method of claim 31, wherein said composition has cationic activity of over 35%.
- 39. The method of claim 31, wherein said composition has cationic activity of over 50%.
- 40. The method of claim 31, wherein said composition has cationic activity of over 60%.
- 41. The method of claim 31, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol is greater than the amount of said at least one glycol.
- 42. The method of claim 41, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol is at least 60% with respect to the combined weight of said fatty alcohol and said glycol.
- 43. The method of claim 41, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol is at least 75% with respect to the combined weight of said fatty alcohol and said glycol.
- 44. The method of claim 41, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol is at least 90% with respect to the combined weight of said fatty alcohol and said glycol.
- 45. The method of claim 41, wherein said ammonium quat is a fatty monoalkyl ammonium quat that includes one fatty chain of between 12 and 36 carbon atoms.
- 46. The method of claim 41, wherein said at least one fatty alcohol is selected from the group consisting of lauryl, myristal, cetyl, stearyl, behenyl, cetearyl fatty alcohols, and mixtures thereof.
- 47. The method of claim 41, wherein said at least one glycol is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylenes glycol, dipropylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and mixtures thereof.
- 48. A method of manufacturing a personal care product, said method comprising the steps of:
a) providing a raw material composition with cationic activity of over 35%, said raw material composition made by forming a mixture containing an ammonium quat and a solvent that includes at least one glycol and at least one fatty alcohol; b) melting said raw material composition; and c) using said melted composition in formulating said personal care product.
- 49. The method of claim 48, wherein said raw material composition is flakeable.
- 50. The method of claim 48, wherein said raw material composition is pastillatable.
- 51. The method of claim 48, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in said solvent is greater than the amount of said at least one glycol.
- 52. The method of claim 48, wherein said ammonium quat is a fatty monoalkyl ammonium quat that includes one fatty chain of between 12 and 36 carbon atoms.
- 53. The method of claim 48, wherein said at least one fatty alcohol is selected from the group consisting of lauryl, myristal, cetyl, stearyl, behenyl, cetearyl fatty alcohols, and mixtures thereof.
- 54. The method of claim 48, wherein said at least one glycol is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylenes glycol, dipropylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and mixtures thereof.
- 55. A method of improving transportation efficiency and/or processing properties of ammonium quats, said method comprising the step of providing a composition containing said ammonium quat and a solvent that includes at least one glycol and at least one fatty alcohol wherein said composition has cationic activity of over 35%, thereby said composition is flakeable or pastillatable.
- 56. The method of claim 55, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in said solvent is greater than the amount of said at least one glycol.
- 57. The method of claim 56, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in the solvent is at least 60% by weight.
- 58. The method of claim 56, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in the solvent is at least 75% by weight.
- 59. The method of claim 56, wherein the amount of said at least one fatty alcohol in the solvent is at least 90% by weight.
- 60. The method of claim 55, further comprising providing said composition having a melting point of less than 100° C.
- 61. The method of claim 55, wherein said composition has a melting point of less than 95° C.
- 62. The method of claim 55, wherein said composition has a melting point of less than 90° C.
- 63. The method of claim 55, wherein said composition has cationic activity of over 50%.
- 64. The method of claim 55, wherein said composition has cationic activity of over 60%.
- 65. The method of claim 55, wherein said ammonium quat is a fatty monoalkyl ammonium quat that includes one fatty chain of between 12 and 36 carbon atoms.
- 66. The method of claim 65, wherein said monoalkyl ammonium quat includes at least one methyl group bound to the quaternary nitrogen of the quat.
- 67. The method of claim 66, wherein said monoalkyl ammonium quat has the structure:
- 68. The method of claim 67, wherein R2 and R3 are both methyl.
- 69. The method of claim 55, wherein the quat is selected from the group consisting of behenyl, erucic, cetyl and stearyl fatty ammonium quats.
- 70. The method of claim 55, wherein said at least one fatty alcohol is selected from the group consisting of lauryl, myristal, cetyl, stearyl, behenyl, cetearyl fatty alcohols, and mixtures thereof.
- 71. The method of claim 55, wherein said at least one glycol is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylenes glycol, dipropylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and mixtures thereof.
- 72. The method of claim 55, further comprising providing said composition to a manufacturer of cosmetic and/or personal care products.
