- 18. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a compound according to claim 1, 11 or 15.
- 19. A method of treating a cysteine protease mediated disease comprising adminstering to a patient in need of such treatment a therapeutically effective amount of a compound according to claim 1, 11 or 15, or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof.
- 20. A method according to claim 19, wherein the cysteine protease is cathepsin S.
- 21. A method according to claim 19, wherein the cysteine protease in cathepsin K.
- 22. A method according to claim 19, wherein the disease is selected from chronic inflammatory disorders, emphysema, malaria, Chagas' disease, a disease characterized by bone resporption, bone loss or excessive cartilage or bone matrix degradation, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, endometriosis, asthma and airway inflammatory diseases.
- 23. A method according to claim 22, wherein said disease characterized by bone resporption, bone loss or excessive cartilage or bone matrix degradation is selected from osteoporosis, Paget's disease, Gaucher disease, gingivitis, periodontitis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
- 24. The method according to claim 22 wherein the autoimmune disease is rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, psoriasis, Grave's disease, myasthenia gravis, scleroderma, glomerulonephritis, atopic dermatitis or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
- 25. A method according to claim 19, wherein the disease is characterized by excessive elastin degradation.
- 26. A method according to claim 25, wherein the disease is selected from lymphangiomyomatosis, vascular inflammation, and cardiovascular disease.
- 27. A method according to claim 19, wherein the disease is characterized by increases in bone resorption and demineralization of bone.
- 28. A method according to claim 27, wherein the disease is selected from cancer and bone metastases of breast or prostate tumors.
