Claims
- 1. A method of mordanting water-soluble dyestuffs on cellulosic fibers in the manufacture of paper which comprises treating said fibers in the form of an aqueous suspension with a water-soluble dyestuff and a water-soluble polymeric quaternary ammonium compound consisting essentially of repeating units of the formula ##STR18## wherein: Y represents a moiety selected from the group consisting of --N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.2 -alkylene-NR-- An.sup.63 , ##STR19## and --N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.2 -alkylene-N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.2 -2An.sup..crclbar. ;
- Z represents a moiety selected from the group consisting of --N(R.sup.1)-alkylene.sup.1 -N(R.sup.2).sub.2, --N.sup..sym. (R.sup.1).sub.2 R.sup.3 An.sup..crclbar., ##STR20## --NH-alkylene.sup.1 -NR.sup.4 -alkylene.sup.1 -NH.sub.2 in which alkylene and alkylene.sup.1 are each selected from the group consisting of --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, and --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --; R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.4 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 hydroxyalkyl and non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl; R.sup.3 is a non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 alkyl; and An.sup..crclbar. is a monovalent anion.
- 2. A method of fixing a water-soluble pigment on cellulosic fibers in the manufacture of paper which comprises treating said fibers in an aqueous suspension with a pigment and a water-soluble polymeric quaternary ammonium compound consisting essentially of repeating units of the formula ##STR21## wherein: Y represents a moiety selected from the group consisting of --N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.2 -alkylene-NR--An.sup..crclbar., ##STR22## and --N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.2 -alkylene-N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.2 -2An.sup..crclbar. ;
- Z represents a moiety selected from the group consisting of --N(R.sup.1)-alkylene.sup.1 -N(R.sup.2).sub.2, --N.sup..sym. (R.sup.1).sub.2 R.sup.3 An.sup..crclbar., ##STR23## --NH-alkylene.sup.1 -NR.sup.4 -alkylene.sup.1 -NH.sub.2 ; in which alkylene and alkylene.sup.1 are each selected from the group consisting of --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, and --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --; R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.4 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 hydroxyalkyl and non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl; R.sup.3 is a non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 alkyl; and An.crclbar. is a monovalent anion.
- 3. A method for effecting the formation with concommitant stabilization of a dispersion of a solid selected from the group consisting of pigments and colorless dyestuff precursors in a predominantly aqueous system which comprises incorporating into said system the solid and a water-soluble polymeric quaternary ammonium compound consisting essentially of repeating units of the formula ##STR24## wherein: Y represents a moiety selected from the group consisting of --N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.2 -alkylene-NR-- An.sup..crclbar., ##STR25## and --N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.2 -alkylene-N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.2 -2An.sup..crclbar. ;
- Z represents a moiety selected from the group consisting of --N(R.sup.1)-alkylene.sup.1 -N(R.sup.2).sub.2, --N.sup..sym. (R.sup.1).sub.2 R.sup.3 An.sup..crclbar., ##STR26## --NH-alkylene.sup.1 -NR.sup.4 -alkylene.sup.1 -NH.sub.2 in which alkylene and alkylene.sup.1 are each selected from the group consisting of --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, and --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --; R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.4 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 hydroxyalkyl and non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl; R.sup.3 is a non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 alkyl; and An.crclbar. is a monovalent anion.
