Claims
- 1. A sizing composition comprising a dialkyl acetal of a C8-C30 aldehyde and an emulsifying agent.
- 2. The sizing composition of claim 1 wherein the emulsifying agent is selected from the group consisting of starches and synthetic polymers.
- 3. The sizing composition of claim 1 wherein the emulsifying agent is cationic.
- 4. The sizing composition of claim 2 wherein the emulsifying agent is a cationic starch derivative selected from the group consisting of cationic starch derivatives of corn, potato, tapioca, and wheat starch.
- 5. The sizing composition of claim 4 wherein the cationic starches are selected from the group consisting of primary, secondary, tertiary or quarternary amine starches.
- 6. The sizing composition of claim 1 wherein the emulsifying agent is selected from the group consisting of polyacrylamides and polyamides.
- 7. The sizing composition of claim 1 wherein said dialkyl acetal is 1,1-octadecoxyoctadecane.
- 8. The sizing composition of claim 1 which is a wet end size.
- 9. A method of sizing a substrate comprising the step of applying a sizing composition comprising distearyl acetal of a C8-C30 aldehyde to said substrate.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the sizing composition comprises an emulsifying agent.
- 11. The method of claim 9 herein said acetal is 1,1-octadecoxyoctadecane.
- 12. The method of claim 9 wherein the substrate is selected from the group consisting of paper, paper board, wood, inorganic substrates and textile products.
- 13. The method of claim 9 wherein the substrate is paper and the sizing composition is applied at the wet end of the paper making process.
- 14. A sized substrate produced according to the method of claim 9.
- 15. The sized substrate according to claim 14 wherein said acetal is 1,1-octadecoxyoctadecane.
- 16. The sized substrate according to claim 15 wherein the substrate is selected from the group consisting of paper and textile products.
- 17. A method of preparing a dialkyl acetal of a C8 to C30 aldehyde comprising the steps of: (a) reacting a carbohydrate with a base, in alcohol, to produce a caustic treated polyol; and (b) reacting a C8 to C30 alkyl bromide in the presence of the caustic treated polyol of step (a) and a suitable solvent to produce said distearyl acetal.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein said acetal is 1,1-octadecoxyoctadecane.
- 19. The method of claim 17 wherein said carbohydrate is cellulose.
- 20. The method of claim 16 wherein the solvent of step (b) is dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO).
- 21. A method of preparing a dialkyl acetal of a C8 to C30 aldehyde comprising the step of reacting a C8 to C30 primary alcohol with an organic base in the presence of a suitable oxidizing agent.
- 22. The method of claim 20 wherein said aldehyde and said primary alcohol are C8 to C24 aldehydes and alcohols.
- 23. The method of claim 20 wherein said acetal is 1,1-octadecoxyoctadecane.
- 24. The method of claim 20 wherein said organic base is an alkyl amine.
- 25. The method of claim 24 wherein said alkyl amine is triethylamine.
- 26. The method of claim 21 wherein said oxidizing agent is selected from the group consisting of n-chlorosuccinimide, n-bromosuccinimide, sodium hypochlorite and chlorine.
