Claims
- 1. A benzylidene alditol acetal comprising at least one substituted benzylidene component wherein said at least one substituted benzylidene component at least possesses one halogen pendant group in the 3- or 4-position and one other pendant group selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl and lower alkoxy in the 3- or 4-position.
- 2. A compound which is the reaction product of at least one mole of an alditol and at least one mole of a benzaldehyde selected from the group conforming with the structure of Formula (I):
- 3. The compound of claim 2 wherein said reaction product is a diacetal and said alditol is sorbitol.
- 4. A compound of Structure (I):

The compound of claim 4 wherein said compound is selected from the group consisting of bis(4-chloro-3-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol; bis(3-chloro-4-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol; bis(4-chloro-2,3-dimethylbenzylidene)sorbitol; bis(3-chloro-2,4-dimethylbenzylidene)sorbitol; bis(3-chloro-4-methoxy-benzylidene)sorbitol; and bis(2,4-dichloro-3-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol, bis(3-bromo-4-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol; bis(3-bromo-4ethylbenzylidene)sorbitol; bis(3-bromo-4-isopropylbenzylidene)sorbitol; bis(4-bromo-3-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol; bis(3-iodo-4-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol; and bis(4-iodo-3-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol.
- 6. A polyolefin plastic composition having improved transparency and nucleation, which comprises a polymer selected from aliphatic polyolefins and copolymers containing at least one aliphatic olefin and one or more ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic comonomers and at least one di-acetal of an alditol; said di-acetal of the alditol conforming with the structure of Formula (II)
- 7. The composition of claim 6, wherein said aliphatic monoolefin is selected from the group consisting of ethylene, propylene, copolymers of ethylene and propylene, vinyl cyclohexane, methylpentene, and 1-butene.
- 8. The composition of claim 6, wherein said di-acetal is provided in said polymer in substantially pure form.
- 9. The composition of claim 6, wherein said diacetal is provided in the form of an admixture with dibenzylidene sorbitol.
- 10. The composition of claim 6, wherein said aliphatic monoolefin is selected from the group consisting of ethylene, propylene, copolymers of ethylene and propylene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, and 1-butene.
- 11. The composition of claim 7, wherein said di-acetal is provided in said polymer in substantially pure form.
- 12. The composition of claim 7, wherein said diacetal is provided in the form of an admixture with dibenzylidene sorbitol.
- 13. The composition of claim 6, which further includes at least one plasticizer selected from the group consisting of dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl phathalate, dioctyl sebacate, mineral oil, and dioctyl adipate.
- 14. A polyolefin plastic composition having improved transparency, which comprises at least one homopolymer of an aliphatic monoolefin or a copolymer containing an aliphatic monoolefin, said monoolefin containing from 2 to about 6 carbon atoms having an average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to about 500,000 and one or more ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic comonomers, said copolymer having been made by polymerizing said monoolefin with said comonomer; and at least one di-acetal of the compounds conforming to the structure of Formula (II)
- 15. The composition of claim 14 wherein said di-acetal is present in an amount within said polyolefin composition from about 0.01 to about 2 percent by weight based upon the total weight of the composition.
- 16. The composition of claim 14, wherein the aliphatic monoolefin is selected from the group consisting of ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, vinyl cyclohexane, and methylpentene.
- 17. A physical mixture of at least one compound as defined by claim 2 and a clarifying agent other than the compound as defined by claim 2.
- 18. The physical mixture of claim 17 wherein said other clarifying agent is a dibenzylidene sorbitol derivative.
- 19. The physical mixture of claim 18 wherein said dibenzylidene sorbitol is bis(3,4-benzylidene)sorbitol.
- 20. A physical mixture of at least one compound as defined by claim 1 and a clarifying agent other than the compound as defined by claim 1.
- 21. The physical mixture of claim 20 wherein said other clarifying agent is a dibenzylidene sorbitol derivative.
- 22. The physical mixture of claim 21 wherein said dibenzylidene sorbitol is bis(3,4-benzylidene)sorbitol.
- 23. The compound of bis(4-chloro-3-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol.
- 24. The compound of bis(3-chloro-4-methylbenzylidene)-sorbitol.
- 25. A compound selected from the group consisting of bis(3-bromo-4-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol, bis(3-bromo-4-ethylbenzylidene) sorbitol, and bis(3-bromo-4-isopropylbenzylidene)sorbitol.
