Claims
- 1. A method of repelling noxious insects comprising the step of exposing said noxious insects to a composition containing from 0.1 to 90 wt. %, based on the total weight of the composition, of at least one of 2-(1-hydroxyalkyl)-cycloalkanols represented by at least one of the following formulae (1), (5) and (6): wherein n is an integer of 4-10, R1 is hydrogen or a straight-chain saturated hydrocarbon radical having 1-6 carbon atoms; R2 is hydrogen or a methyl group; Rm represents m of the same or different, straight-chain or branched, saturated or unsaturated, hydrocarbon radicals R which, as a substituent group, is bonded to carbocyclic atoms; m is an integer of 0-8, provided that m is at least one when either one of R1 or R2 is an alkyl group and m is at least 2 when both R1 and R2 are alkyl groups; the sum of the carbon atoms of Rm does not exceed 8, wherein when n is 4, R is optionally an isopropylidene group which intramolecularly bridges between the third and sixth carbocyclic atoms and with the proviso that compounds of the following formulae (2)-(4) and (7)-(10) are excluded therefrom: wherein R3 and R4 are each a straight-chain or branched, saturated or unsaturated, hydrocarbon radical having 1-8 carbon atoms; and R5 and R6 are each independently hydrogen or a lower alkyl group having at most 3 carbon atoms, with the sum of the carbon atoms of R5 and R6 being 0-3.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the 2-(1-hydroxyalkyl)cycloalkanols are at least one member selected from the group consisting of 2-hydroxymethyl-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanol, 2-hydroxymethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexanol, 2-hydroxymethyl-3,4-dimethylcyclohexanol and 2-hydroxymethyl-4-isopropyl-6-methyl cyclohexanol.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said noxious insects are selected from the group consisting of mosquitoes, black flies, ticks, millipedes, armyworms and slugs.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the composition is applied to a substrate.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the substrate is selected from the group consisting of a sheet, film and net.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is applied to a human or an animal.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the noxious insects are mosquitoes.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the mosquitoes are tiger mosquitoes.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the 2-(1-hydroxyalkyl)-cycloalkanol is contained in an amount of 3-20% by weight.
