Claims
- 1. A fuel injector comprising:
an injector body defining a first nozzle outlet set; a nozzle insert attached to said injector body and defining a second nozzle outlet set.
- 2. The fuel injector of claim 1 wherein said first nozzle outlet set includes at least one first nozzle outlet oriented at a first average angle with respect to an injector body centerline; and
said second nozzle outlet set includes at least one second nozzle outlet oriented at a second average angle with respect to said injector body centerline.
- 3. The fuel injector of claim 1 wherein said first nozzle outlet set defines a conventional spray pattern; and
said second nozzle outlet set defines a homogeneous charge compression ignition spray pattern.
- 4. The fuel injector of claim 1 wherein said second nozzle outlet set has a greater number of nozzle outlets than said first nozzle outlet set.
- 5. The fuel injector of claim 1 including a needle valve member defining a guide bore that receives a portion of said nozzle insert; and
said needle valve member being movable between a first position in which said first nozzle outlet set is blocked, and a second position in which said first nozzle outlet set is open.
- 6. The fuel injector of claim 5 wherein said needle valve member is a first needle valve member; and
a second needle valve member at least partially positioned inside said first needle valve member.
- 7. The fuel injector of claim 6 wherein said second needle valve member includes a sac reduction extension positioned inside said nozzle insert.
- 8. The fuel injector of claim 5 wherein said nozzle insert is press fit attached to said injector body in an attachment bore; and
said attachment bore has a diameter smaller than said slide bore.
- 9. The fuel injector of claim 1 wherein said first nozzle outlet set defines a conventional spray pattern;
said second nozzle outlet set defines a homogeneous charge compression ignition spray pattern a first needle valve member defining a slide bore that receives a portion of said nozzle insert; and a second needle valve member at least partially positioned inside said first needle valve member.
- 10. The fuel injector of claim 9 wherein said nozzle insert is press fit attached to said injector body in an attachment bore;
said attachment bore has a diameter smaller than said slide bore; and said second needle valve member includes a sac reduction extension positioned inside said nozzle insert.
- 11. A nozzle insert comprising:
a one piece metallic component having a first end separated from a second end by an external surface; said external surface including a large diameter segment and a small diameter segment; and at least one fluid passage extending between said first end and said second end.
- 12. The nozzle insert of claim 11 wherein said at least one fluid passage includes a plurality of nozzle outlets.
- 13. The nozzle insert of claim 12 wherein said nozzle outlets are arranged in a shower head pattern.
- 14. The nozzle insert of claim 12 wherein said plurality of nozzle outlets is greater than ten nozzle outlets.
- 15. The nozzle insert of claim 11 wherein said external surface includes a large diameter segment and a small diameter segment.
- 16. The nozzle insert of claim 15 wherein said large diameter segment is separated from said small diameter segment by an annular engagement surface.
- 17. A method of assembling a fuel injector, comprising the steps of:
fixing a nozzle insert in an attachment bore of an injector body component; and sliding a needle valve member along an outer surface of the nozzle insert.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein said fixing step includes a step of press fitting the nozzle insert into the attachment bore until an annular engagement surface contacts the injector body component.
- 19. The method of claim 17 wherein said sliding step includes a step of advancing the needle valve member over the nozzle insert until the needle valve member contacts a seat on the injector body component.
- 20. The method of claim 17 wherein the needle valve member is a first needle valve member; and
inserting a sac reduction extension of a second needle valve member into a hollow interior of the nozzle insert.
