Claims
- 1. A method for detecting a pattern of binding which identifies a disease or medical condition, the method comprising:(a) identifying nucleic acid ligands to target molecules that may be indicative of a disease and/or medical condition; (b) binding said nucleic acid ligands to spatially discrete locations on a solid support; (c) contacting said solid support with biological sample solutions that may comprise said target molecules from individuals with and without said disease or medical condition to thereby bind target molecules to nucleic acid ligands on said solid support; (d) detecting the pattern of binding of said target molecules contained within biological sample solutions obtained from individuals with and without said disease or medical condition; and (e) comparing the patterns of binding detected in step (d), whereby a pattern of binding which identifies said disease or medical condition is detected.
- 2. A method for detecting a target molecule in a test mixture, the method comprising:(a) preparing a biochip, the biochip comprising a solid support, said support comprising a plurality of spatially defined addresses, each said address having at least one copy of a single species of nucleic acid ligand attached thereto, each said species of nucleic acid ligand having specific affinity for one of said target molecules suspected of being contained in said test mixture, and each said species of nucleic acid ligand binding to said target molecule through non-Watson-Crick interactions; (b) contacting said biochip with said test mixture; and (c) detecting and measuring the amount of said target molecule bound to said biochip at one or more of said addresses.
