Claims
- 1. A nut device comprising, in combination:
- a) a hollow body structure having a side wall, end walls, and a tapered bore, the body structure defining a longitudinal axis,
- b) a sleeve extending in the body substantially coaxially therewith, the sleeve having a longitudinally extending split, and a side taper engaging said body structure tapered bore, the sleeve having a bore thread,
- c) an anchor pin extending longitudinally endwise in said split and anchored to at least one of said body structure end walls, for blocking rotation of the sleeve, while allowing sleeve longitudinal movement relative to the pin and body structure, the pin having opposite ends received in openings defined by said end walls,
- d) at least one of said body structure end walls having a bore in alignment with said sleeve bore threading,
- e) whereby the nut device may be rotatably connected to a longitudinally extending member having threading engaging said sleeve threading, and locked to said member by squeezing of said sleeve, in response to sliding engagement of the sleeve side taper with said body tapered bore.
- 2. The combination of claim 1 wherein the sleeve has surfaces at opposite sides of the split, said surfaces having spacing therebetween greater than the width of the pin in a direction extending between said surfaces.
- 3. The combination of claim 1 wherein the sleeve split intersects the sleeve bore thread.
- 4. The combination of claim 1 wherein the other of said body structure end walls also has a bore in alignment with said sleeve bore thread, for receiving said member threading, in response to said rotatable connection of said device to said member.
- 5. The combination of claim 4 including said member in threaded engagement with said sleeve bore thread and received by bores in the body structure end walls.
- 6. The combination of claim 1 including said member in threaded engagement with said sleeve bore thread and received by said one end wall bore.
- 7. The combination of claim 1 including welding connecting one of said body structure end walls to the body structure side wall.
- 8. The combination of claim 1 wherein said body structure side wall has external hex flats.
- 9. The combination of claim 1 wherein said body structure includes a tubular insert received inwardly of said side wall, and defining said tapered bore.
- 10. The method of claim 1 including providing the body structure to include a tubular insert received inwardly of said side wall, and defining said tapered bore.
- 11. The combination of claim 1 wherein the sleeve has at least one flexure spaced from said split to flex in response to said squeezing of the sleeve to facilitate locking of the sleeve threading to said member.
- 12. The combination of claim 11 wherein the sleeve has multiple of said flexures, spaced from the split.
- 13. The combination of claim 12 wherein said flexures extend adjacent the sleeve bore thread.
- 14. The combination of claim 12 wherein the sleeve has multiple slots extending outwardly from the flexures to intersect the sleeve side taper.
- 15. The combination of claim 11 including said member adjacent which said at lest one flexure extends.
- 16. The method of providing a nut device, which includes the steps:
- a) providing a hollow body structure having a side wall, end walls, and a tapered bore, the body structure defining a longitudinal axis,
- b) providing a sleeve extending in the body substantially coaxially therewith, the sleeve having a longitudinally extending split, and a side taper engaging said body structure tapered bore, the sleeve having a bore thread,
- c) inserting an anchor pin member to extend longitudinally endwise in said split, for blocking rotation of the sleeve, while allowing sleeve longitudinally movement relative to the pin and body structure, the pin having opposite ends, and including locating said pin opposite ends respectively in openings defined by said end walls,
- d) providing at least one of the body structure end walls with a bore in alignment with said sleeve bore threading, threading engaging said sleeve threading, and locked to said member by squeezing of said sleeve, in response to sliding engagement of the sleeve side taper with said body tapered bore.
- 17. The method of claim 16 including forming internal threading in the sleeve, while the sleeve is in the body structure, for thread alignment.
