Claims
- 1. An apparatus for seaming roofing membranes, wherein one of the membranes is secured to an underlying support structure by at least one protruding fastener, the apparatus comprising:
a carriage; a heating assembly carried by said carriage, said heating assembly generating heat capable of bonding the membranes to one another; a seaming assembly carried by said carriage, said seaming assembly directing the generated heat to the membranes while also applying pressure to the membranes so as to form a substantially continuous width seam except where interrupted by the protruding fastener; and a roller carried by said seaming assembly, said roller having a deflectable outer surface made of a single material.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said single material has durometer hardness of about 5 or less on a Shore A scale.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said material is arbitrarily deflectable along the entire length of said roller.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the protruding fasteners are disposed indiscriminately in the continuous width seam.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said roller comprises an axle, which carries said deflectable outer surface, said axle comprising at least two sections of different diameter.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said axle comprises a central section having a first diameter and an outer section having a second diameter larger than said first diameter.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said deflectable outer surface has a maximum deflection of about ½ inch.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said central section is disposed between an outer section on either side thereof.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said deflectable outer surface is disposed over said central section and said outer sections.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said seaming assembly comprises:
a nozzle for directing heated air between the membranes, said nozzle having an end with a proximal edge and a distal edge, wherein said end is disposed in a position other than parallel with respect to said roller.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said proximal edge is closer to said roller than said distal edge.
- 12. A method for full-width seaming roofing membranes to one another comprising:
placing a first roofing membrane having a lateral edge on a roof structure; securing said lateral edge to said roof structure with at least one protruding fastener that extends above said lateral edge; placing a second roofing membrane on the roof structure and on at least said lateral edge to cover said at least one protruding fastener; positioning an apparatus proximally said lateral edge, said apparatus having a heating assembly and a seaming assembly; heating said first and second roofing membranes to a predetermined temperature with said heating assembly; moving said seaming assembly to apply pressure to said first and second membranes to form a substantially continuous width seam between said first and second roofing membranes except where interrupted by the protruding fastener; providing said seaming assembly with a plurality of rollers; spring-biasing one of said plurality of rollers, said spring-biased roller passing over said protruding fastener during said moving step; and providing said seaming assembly with a deflectable outer surface made of a single material, wherein said deflectable outer surface deforms to the shape of the protruding fastener when passing thereover and reforms to a substantially cylindrical shape after passing over the protruding fastener.
- 13. The method according to claim 12, further comprising:
providing said seaming assembly with an axle which includes a center section having a first diameter and outer sections on either side of said center section having a second diameter.
- 14. The method according to claim 13, wherein said first diameter is less than said second diameter.
- 15. The method according to claim 14 further comprising:
providing said deflectable outer surface with a hardness value of about 5 to about 3 on a Shore A scale.
- 16. The method according to claim 14, further comprising:
allowing said deflectable outer surface to deflect up to about ½ inch when the obstruction is encountered.
