Claims
- 1. An odor absorbing paperboard carton having interior and exterior surfaces for packaging products which give off significant odors or aromas, said interior surface having applied thereto an effective amount of an odor sorbing coating including a binder at a coat weight of from about 3 to 26 lbs/ream (ream size 3000 ft.sup.2) containing activated carbon wherein the concentration of activated carbon in the odor sorbing coating is between about 1 and 10 mg/cu.in. of interior volume, and said exterior surface having graphics printed thereon to describe products packaged in the carton, said carton defining an interior volume which is rendered substantially completely odor-free by said odor sorbing coating.
- 2. The carton of claim 1 wherein said odor sorbing coating comprises an aqueous binder system.
- 3. The carton of claim 2 wherein the aqueous binder system is selected from the group consisting of sodium silicate, polyesters, starch and polyvinyl alcohol.
- 4. The carton of claim 3 wherein substantially all exposed interior surfaces of the carton are coated with the odor sorbing coating.
- 5. The carton of claim 4 wherein the odor sorbing coating is pattern printed on the interior surfaces of the carton in the form of an odor sorbing ink composition leaving designated areas within the carton free of the odor sorbing ink composition.
- 6. An odor absorbing carton blank for forming cartons for products which give off significant odors or aromas, said blank being cut and scored to define plurality of panels comprising side walls, end walls, a bottom panel and a closure panel, said blank having an outer surface and an inner surface, said outer surface having graphics printed thereon to describe products packaged in cartons formed from the carton blank, and said inner surface having an odor sorbing coating applied thereto, at a coat weight of from about 3 to 26 lbs/ream (ream size 3000 ft.sup.2), said odor sorbing coating comprising activated carbon in an aqueous binder, wherein the concentration of activated carbon in the odor sorbing coating is at least about 6% by weight, to provide said odor sorbing coating with an effective amount of activated carbon sufficient to render cartons prepared from the carton blank substantially completely odor-free.
- 7. The carton blank of claim 6 wherein the aqueous binder in the odor sorbing coating is selected from the group consisting of sodium silicate, polyester, starch and polyvinyl alcohol.
- 8. The carton blank of claim 6 wherein the odor sorbing coating is printed on the inner surface of the carton blank.
- 9. The method of making an odor absorbing packaging material on a printing press for use in the manufacture of odor sorbing cartons for packaging products which give off significant odors or aromas, comprising:
- (a) selecting a paperboard substrate for the odor absorbing packaging material having an inner, product contact surface and an outer printable surface;
- (b) preparing an odor sorbing ink composition for printing on the inner product contact surface of the substrate of step (a), said composition comprising from about 20-95% activated carbon dispersed in an aqueous binder system comprising 5-80% binder, at a solids content of from about 30-45% wherein the concentration of activated carbon is at least about 6% by weight; and,
- (c) printing the odor sorbing ink composition of step (b) onto the inner product contact surface of the paperboard substrate of step (a) in a preselected pattern to achieve an effective concentration of activated carbon on substantially the entirety of the product contact surface of the substrate.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the binder system of step (b) is selected from the group consisting of sodium silicate, polyester, starch and polyvinyl alcohol.
- 11. The method of claim 10 which includes the additional step of:
- (d) printing graphics suitable for describing the products to be packaged in the packaging material on the outer printable surface of said substrate.
- 12. The method of claim 11 which includes the additional step of:
- (e) overprinting the odor sorbing ink composition with a rub resistant coating that doesn't adversely affect the effectiveness of the odor sorbing capacity of the activated carbon.
