Claims
- 1. An offshore ice structure constructed in a floating natural ice sheet in an arctic offshore environment comprising:
- a predetermined area of natural ice separated from said natural ice sheet grounded to the sea bottom to form a grounded ice island;
- artificially formed ice extending from the top of said grounded island to above the surface of said natural ice sheet, said artificial ice having a substantially flat uppermost surface in the central portion of said ice island and slanting to the outermost edges separting said ice island from said natural ice sheet;
- slot means formed in said natural ice sheet around said ice island to form points of weakness in the event said natural ice moves against said ice island; and
- a plurality of heat extracting devices extending from above the surface of said ice island into said sea bottom to conduct heat from and thereby accelerate freezing of the sea bottom and aid in anchoring said ice island in place.
- 2. A structure as recited in claim 1 including reinforcing materials mixed with said artificial ice to improve the integrity and strength of said ice island.
- 3. A structure as recited in claim 1 including drainage holes formed in said ice island to provide a stronger, less saline ice island.
- 4. A structure as recited in claim 3 in which said ice island includes alternate layers of reinforcing material and artificial ice.
- 5. A structure as recited in claim 4 including insulation surrounding the exposed surfaces of said ice island.
- 6. A structure as recited in claim 5 including a water distribution system arranged on said ice island
- 7. A structure as recited in claim 6 including:
- a caisson formed in said ice island extending from said surface of said central portion thereof into the sea bottom; and
- said caisson having an upper portion above the sea bottom and a lower portion below the sea bottom and a weak point therebetween at said mudline.
- 8. A structure as recited in claim 7 including a watertight seal formed at said mudline between said upper and lower portions of said caisson.
- 9. A structure as recited in claim 8 including insulation said on or about caisson above and below said mudline to resist heat transfer therethrough.
- 10. A structure as recited in claim 9 including refrigeration means imbedded in said ice island for maintaining said ice island frozen.
- 11. A structure as recited in claim 7 including first well control equipment located within the lower portion of said caisson.
- 12. A structure as recited in claim 11 including second surface well control equipment releasably connected to said first well control equipment.
- 13. An offshore structure in an arctic offshore environment comprising:
- an artifically formed offshore island extending from the sea floor to above the surface of the water; and
- a protective caisson formed through said island extending from the surface thereof into the sea floor, said caisson having an upper portion above the sea floor and a lower portion below the sea floor, said upper and lower portions of said caisson being movable relative to each other and said caisson having a weak point between said upper and lower portions at said sea floor to permit movement of said upper portion of said caisson relative to the lower portion of said caisson in the event said island moves.
- 14. A structure as recited in claim 13 including a watertight seal formed at said sea floor between said upper and lower portions of said caisson.
- 15. A structure as recited in claim 14 including well control equipment located in said caisson below said sea floor.
- 16. A structure as recited in claim 15 including well control equipment located above said sea floor releasably connected within said caisson to said well control equipment located below said sea floor.
- 17. A structure as recited in claim 16 including first well control equipment located within the lower portion of said caisson.
- 18. A structure as recited in claim 17 including second surface well control equipment releasably connected to said first well control equipment.
- 19. An offshore arctic structure for conducting oil field operations formed in a floating natural ice sheet comprising a predetermined area of natural ice separated from said natural ice sheet and grounded to the sea floor;
- material extending from said separated grounded natural ice to above the surface of said natural ice sheet to form a grounded island; and
- a caisson extending through said island into said sea floor;
- said caisson having an upper portion above said sea floor and a lower portion below said sea floor, said upper and lower portions of said caisson being movable relative to each other and said caisson having a weak point between said upper and lower portions at the level of said sea floor to permit movement of said upper portion of said caisson relative to the lower portion of said caisson in the event said island moves.
- 20. A structure as recited in claim 19 including a watertight seal formed at the level of said sea floor between said upper and lower portions of said caisson.
- 21. A structure as recited in claim 20 including well control equipment located in said caisson below said sea floor.
- 22. A structure as recited in claim 21 including well control equipment located above said sea floor releasably connected within said caisson to said well control equipment located below said sea floor.
