Claims
- 1. A pharmaceutical tablet for the systemic, sustained-release delivery of a therapeutically active compound prepared by a process comprising the steps of:
- (a) dispersing the therapeutically active compound in an oil,
- (b) mixing the compound/oil dispersion with a carrier silica; and
- (c) forming the dispersion/carrier mixture into a tablet;
- wherein the oil is present in an amount of between 5% and about 20% by weight and provides a prolonged or sustained release of compound from the tablet.
- 2. A tablet according to claim 1 wherein the amount of oil is between 5% and 15% by weight.
- 3. A tablet according to claim 1 wherein the amount of oil is about 10% by weight.
- 4. A tablet according to claim 1 wherein the oil is selected from the group consisting of vegetable, mineral, animal and edible oils.
- 5. A tablet according to claim 1 wherein the oil is a vegetable oil selected from the group consisting of linseed, tung, otica, soybean, cottonseed, castor, coconut, corn, olive and palm oil.
- 6. A tablet according to claim 1 wherein the oil is an animal oil selected from the group consisting of fish oils, fish liver oils, oleic acid and sperm oil.
- 7. A tablet according to claim 1 wherein the oil is a mineral oil selected from the group consisting of petroleum and refined paraffin oils.
- 8. A tablet according to claim 7 wherein the mineral oil is light mineral oil.
- 9. A tablet according to claim 1 wherein the oil is selected from the group consisting of citrus peel oils and citrus seed oils.
- 10. A method for preparing a pharmaceutical tablet for the systemic, sustained-release delivery of a therapeutically active compound comprising the steps of:
- (a) dispersing the therapeutically active compound in an oil,
- (b) mixing the compound/oil dispersion with a carrier silica; and
- (c) forming the dispersion/carrier mixture into a tablet;
- wherein the oil is present in an amount of between 5% and about 20% by weight and provides a prolonged or sustained release of compound from the tablet.
- 11. A method according to claim 10 wherein the amount of oil is between 5% and 15% by weight.
- 12. A tablet according to claim 10 wherein the amount of oil is about 10% by weight.
- 13. A method according to claim 10 wherein the oil is selected from the group consisting of vegetable, mineral, animal and edible oils.
- 14. A method according to claim 10 wherein the oil is a vegetable oil selected from the group consisting of linseed, tung, otica, soybean, cottonseed, castor, coconut, corn, olive and palm oil.
- 15. A method according to claim 10 wherein the oil is an animal oil selected from the group consisting of the fish oils, fish liver oils, oleic acid and sperm oil.
- 16. A method according to claim 10 wherein the oil is a mineral oil selected from the group consisting of petroleum and refined paraffin oils.
- 17. A method according to claim 16 wherein the mineral oil is light mineral oil.
- 18. A method according to claim 10 wherein the oil is selected from the group consisting of citrus peel oils and citrus seed oils.
- 19. A method according to claim 10 wherein the fixture that is formed into a tablet is wet.
- 20. A method according to claim 10 comprising the additional step of coating the tablet formed in step (c).
