Claims
- 1. A mechanical press comprising:
- a frame structure with a crown and a bed;
- a slide guided by the frame structure for reciprocating movement in opposed relation to said bed, said slide including a drive piston having a periphery;
- a drive mechanism attached to said frame structure for reciprocating said slide;
- a seal about said drive piston periphery to prevent oil migration from said drive piston to said slide; and
- an oil control mechanism including a housing having a bore through which said drive piston extends, said housing including at least one drain port opening into said bore at said drive piston periphery, a vacuum in communication with said at least one drain port, and an air duct for communicating air external of said housing to said drain port, wherein said air duct is structured and arranged to inlet a flow of air suitable to provide a vacuum induced air flow through said drain port during vacuum operation sufficient to vacuum away from said drive piston oil reaching said drain port after leaking past said seal toward said slide.
- 2. The mechanical press of claim 1 wherein said air duct comprises a space between said drive piston and said bore, and wherein said drain port is disposed along said piston between said space and said seal.
- 3. The mechanical press of claim 2 wherein said space comprises a diametral clearance of between about 0.008 inch and about 0.012 inch of said bore relative to said drive piston.
- 4. The mechanical press of claim 3 wherein said diametral clearance comprises about 0.010 inch.
- 5. The mechanical press of claim 2 wherein said bore further comprises a chamfer at an edge exposed to an external air source.
- 6. The mechanical press of claim 1 wherein said drive piston is substantially vertically aligned.
- 7. The mechanical press of claim 1 wherein said at least one drain port comprises an annular drain port circumscribing said drive piston.
- 8. The mechanical press of claim 7 further comprising at least one conduit through said housing for providing communication between said annular drain port and said vacuum.
- 9. The mechanical press of claim 8 wherein said at least one conduit comprises a plurality of conduits.
- 10. The mechanical press of claim 1 wherein said vacuum comprises an air driven ejector.
- 11. The mechanical press of claim 10 wherein said ejector is driven by compressed air.
- 12. The mechanical press of claim 1 wherein said housing is separate from a second housing for said piston and is operably attached to said second housing.
