Claims
- 1. A method of concentrating and analyzing lubrication oil borne contaminants comprising the steps of:
- supporting a vessel confined, fixed volume of lubrication oil containing magnetically responsive particles above a gravity settlement surface for a measured time interval;
- imposing a first magnetic field having a first flux pattern upon said fixed volume of lubrication oil within said vessel for at least a portion of said measured time interval to bias movement of said magnetically responsive particles in said fixed volume of lubrication oil against said settlement surface in an area coincident with said first flux pattern;
- separating said vessel and substantially all of said fixed volume of lubrication oil from said settlement surface at the end of said measured time interval while maintaining said magnetically responsive particles against said settlement surface with said first magnetic field;
- maintaining said first magnetic field on said settlement surface and altering said first flux pattern by imposing a second magnetic field on said settlement surface to stimulate movement of said magnetically responsive particles on said settlement surface; and,
- visually analyzing said magnetically responsive particles while moving on said settlement surface during said step of altering the second magnetic field with respect to type, source or consequence of the particles on said surface.
- 2. A method as described by claim 1 wherein said second magnetic field coaxially surrounds said first magnetic field and has a polarity that is opposite to a polarity of said first magnetic field, and wherein the step of altering comprises mechanically moving said second magnetic field with respect to said settlement surface to alter said first flux pattern.
- 3. A method as described by claim 2 wherein the step of visually analyzing said particles is assisted by an optically magnified view of said particles.
- 4. A method as described by claim 2, wherein said magnetically responsive particles are transferred from said settlement surface to a second support surface for the step of visually analyzing.
- 5. A method as described in claim 2, wherein said first magnetic field is generated by a cylindrical permanent magnet that polarized in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis thereof.
- 6. A method according to claim 5, wherein said second magnetic field is generated by an annular permanent magnet that coaxially surrounds said cylindrical permanent magnet, and wherein said second permanent magnet is polarized in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis thereof.
- 7. A method as described by claim 1 wherein said magnetically responsive particles are transferred from said settlement surface to a second support surface for the step of visually analyzing.
- 8. A method as described by claim 1 wherein wherein said first and second magnetic fields are coincident with respect to a common axis, and wherein said step of altering comprises the step of providing an electromagnet for creating said second magnetic field, and the step of adjusting a voltage to a coil of said electromagnet to alter the magnetic field strength of said second magnetic field.
- 9. A method as described by claim 8 wherein the step of visually analyzing said particles is assisted by an optically magnified view of said particles.
- 10. A method as described by claim 8, wherein said magnetically responsive particles are transferred from said settlement surface to a second support surface for the step of visually analyzing.
- 11. A method as described by claim 8, wherein said step of altering further comprises the step of alternating a polarity of said second magnetic field by changing a polarity of said voltage.
- 12. A method as described in claim 8, wherein said first magnetic field is generated by a cylindrical permanent magnet that polarized in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis thereof.

No. 08/134,968 filed Oct. 13, 1993, and now abandoned. Application Ser. No. 08/134,968 was a Continuation-In-Part of application Ser. No. 07/807,041 filed Dec. 11, 1991 and now issued on Nov. 16, 1993 as U.S. Pat. No. 5,262,732.
