Claims
- 1. In a modular disc cutterbar having a plurality of transversely spaced cutter modules interconnected in a modular configuration, each said cutter module including a rotatable disc member having a knife mounted thereto for severing standing crop material by impact action upon rotation of said disc member, each said cutter module being rotatable driven by a drive mechanism interconnecting the cutter modules, an improved drive assembly mounted in each cutter module, comprising:
- a gear hub having said drive gear incorporated therein;
- a drive transfer hub;
- a shaft member interconnecting said gear hub and said drive transfer hub;
- a bearing rotatably supporting each said hub; and
- an oil slinger mounted on each of said drive transfer hub and said gear hub and being located between the corresponding said bearing and a seal engaged at a remote end of said drive assembly to seal said oil reservoir.
- 2. The modular disc cutterbar of claim 1 wherein said cutter module includes a groove underlying each said bearing to permit a flow of oil from said oil reservoir past each bearing to the respective said oil slinger.
- 3. The modular disc cutterbar of claim 2 wherein said oil slinger is formed as a split ring having blades formed around the circumference thereof.
- 4. The modular disc cutterbar of claim 3 wherein said blades are angled alternately to disperse oil to opposite directions upon rotation of said oil slinger with the rotation of said drive assembly.
- 5. A disc cutterbar comprising:
- a plurality of transversely spaced cutter units having a central oil reservoir;
- a drive assembly rotatably supported within the oil reservoir in each said cutter unit and including a rotatable shaft member;
- a pair of transversely spaced bearings carried by each said cutter unit for rotatably supporting said drive assembly;
- a pair of transversely spaced seal members sealing off said oil reservoir against said drive assembly, each said seal member being positioned outboard of the corresponding said bearing such that said bearing are within the sealed oil reservoir; and
- a pair of transversely spaced oil slingers mounted on said drive assembly, each said oil slinger being located between a corresponding said seal member and an adjacent said bearing so that said oil slinger disperses oil onto said seal member.
- 6. The disc cutterbar of claim 5 wherein said cutter unit is formed with a groove to underlie each said bearing to permit oil to flow past said bearing to the corresponding said oil slinger.
- 7. The disc cutterbar of claim 6 wherein each said oil slinger is formed as a split ring having blades formed around the circumference thereof, said blades being angled alternately to disperse oil to opposite directions upon rotation of said oil slinger with the rotation of said drive assembly.
- 8. The disc cutterbar of claim 7 wherein said drive assembly comprises:
- a gear hub having a drive gear incorporated therein and an annular groove formed therein to receive one of said oil slingers;
- a drive transfer hub having an annular groove formed therein to receive the other of said oil slingers; and
- a shaft member interconnecting said gear hub and said drive transfer hub.
