Claims
- 1. A process for preparing the olefin hydration catalyst which comprises employing an intermediate density silica xerogel characterized by having a particle size passing through 3 mesh and retained on 20 mesh, a bulk density of 0.38-0.48 g/cc, a pore volume of 0.80-2.2 ml/g with most of said volume contributed by micropores, and a BET surface area of 200-500 m.sup.2 /g; contacting said xerogel with water vapor or a mixture of water vapor and an inert gas diluent at a total pressure of 20-1500 psig, a relative humidity of about 30%-100%, and a temperature above 100.degree. C. and less than 200.degree. C.; and impregnating said xerogel with H.sub.3 PO.sub.4.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said xerogel is retained on 12 mesh, has a bulk density of 0.40-0.45 g/cc, a pore volume of 0.85-1.3 ml/g, and has the following composition in terms of weight percent dry basis: SiO.sub.2 over 99%, Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 0.01-0.03%, Na.sub.2 O 0.02-0.09%, and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 less than 0.4%.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein said contacting is effected for 4-16 hours before said xerogel is impregnated with H.sub.3 PO.sub.4.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein said temperature is 145.degree.-175.degree. C., said relative humidity is about 30%-50%, said total pressure is about 150-650 psig, and said contact time is about 4-10 hours.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein said xerogel is retained on 12 mesh, has a bulk density of 0.40-0.45 g/cc, a pore volume of 0.85-1.3 ml/g, and has the following composition in terms of weight percent dry basis: SiO.sub.2 over 99%, Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 0.01-0.03%, Na.sub.2 O 0.02-0.09%, and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 less than 0.4%.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein said H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 is employed in the form of a 40%-70% aqueous solution and said impregnation is effected at 20.degree.-50.degree. C.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein said concentration is 55%-60%.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein said xerogel is impregnated with H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 before it is contacted with said water vapor.
