Claims
- 1. An adaptive four-wheel vehicle drive system comprising, in combination,
- a primary drive line including a primary drive shaft and primary drive wheels at the front of the vehicle,
- a secondary drive line including a secondary drive shaft and secondary wheels at the rear of the vehicle,
- a transfer case having a primary output shaft adapted to drive said primary drive wheels, a secondary output shaft adapted to drive said secondary drive wheels, modulating clutch means for selectively transferring torque from said primary output shaft to said secondary output shaft,
- means for sensing the rotational speed of said primary drive line,
- means for sensing the rotational speed of said secondary drive line, and
- a microcontroller for comparing the speed of said primary drive line with the speed of said secondary drive line and engaging said modulating clutch means in increments when the difference between said speeds is greater than a predetermined value and disengaging said modulating clutch means in increments when said difference is less than said predetermined value.
- 2. The adaptive four-wheel vehicle drive system of claim further including a sensor for providing a signal to said microcontroller indicating application of vehicle brakes.
- 3. The adaptive four-wheel vehicle drive system of claim 1 further including a driven input shaft, a planetary gear speed reducing assembly coupled to said input shaft and having an output member, a clutch for selectively coupling said primary driven output shaft to either said input shaft or said output member of said planetary gear speed reducing assembly, drive means for positioning said clutch means and a sensor for providing data to said microcontroller indicating the position of said clutch.
- 4. The adaptive four-wheel vehicle drive system of claim 1 further including a position sensor indicating the position of a throttle and said microcontroller includes means responsive to said throttle position sensor for incrementing said modulating clutch means.
- 5. The adaptive four-wheel vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein said increments are at least eight in number.
- 6. The adaptive four-wheel vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein said secondary drive line includes an axle engaging and disengaging means.
- 7. The adaptive four-wheel vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein said modulating clutch means is an electromagnetically actuated clutch.
- 8. The adaptive four-wheel vehicle drive system of claim 7 wherein said electromagnetically actuated clutch is driven by a PWM electrical current.
- 9. The adaptive four-wheel vehicle drive system of claim 1 further including a secondary drive line differential having a housing and wherein said modulating clutch means is housed within said secondary differential housing.
- 10. The adaptive four-wheel vehicle drive system of claim 1 further including means for selectively coupling said secondary drive wheels to said secondary drive line, wherein said microcontroller detects wheel slip and activates said modulating clutch means and said means for selectively coupling said secondary drive wheels when said difference between said speeds exceeds a second predetermined value during two-wheel drive operation.
- 11. An adaptive vehicle drive system comprising, in combination,
- a primary drive line including a primary drive shaft and primary drive wheels,
- a secondary drive line including a secondary drive shaft and secondary wheels,
- a transfer case having a primary output adapted to drive said primary drive line, a secondary output adapted to drive said secondary drive line, modulating clutch means for selectively transferring torque from said primary output to said secondary output,
- a first sensor for sensing the rotational speed of said primary drive line,
- a second sensor for sensing the rotational speed of said secondary drive line, and
- a microcontroller for determining operating values including the difference between the speeds of said primary drive line and said secondary drive line and the identity of one of said drive lines overrunning the other of said drive line, comparing said operating values with a plurality of predetermined values and engaging said modulating clutch means when said predetermined values are exceeded by said operating values and disengaging said modulating clutch means when said predetermined values exceed said operating values.
- 12. The adaptive vehicle drive system of claim 11 wherein said operating values further include the speed of such vehicle.
- 13. The adaptive vehicle drive system of claim 11 further including a third sensor for providing an indication to said microcontroller of vehicle brake application and wherein said predetermined values are adjusted in response to said vehicle brake indication.
- 14. The adaptive vehicle drive system of claim 11 further including a fourth sensor for providing an indication to said microcontroller of the angle of the vehicle steering wheels and adjusting said predetermined values in response to said steering angle indication.
- 15. The adaptive vehicle drive system of claim 11 further including a Speed change gear assembly disposed in said transfer case for providing a high speed and low speed drive to said primary output and a fifth sensor for providing an indication to said microcontroller of vehicle brake application and wherein said predetermined values are adjusted in response to the selection of high speed-or low speed output of said gear assembly and said vehicle brake indication.
- 16. The adaptive vehicle drive system of claim 11 wherein said modulating clutch means is engaged and disengaged in increments and each of said increments represents a change of about 8%.
- 17. An adaptive vehicle drive system comprising, in combination,
- a primary drive line including a primary drive shaft and primary drive wheels,
- a secondary drive line including a secondary drive shaft and secondary wheels,
- a transfer case having a primary output adapted to drive said primary drive line, a secondary output adapted to drive said secondary drive line, modulating clutch means for selectively transferring torque from said primary output to said secondary output,
- a first sensor for sensing the rotational speed of said primary drive line,
- a second sensor for sensing the rotational speed of said secondary drive line, and
- a microcontroller for determining operating values including the difference between the speeds of said primary drive line and said secondary drive line and the identity of one of said drive lines overrunning the other of said drive line, comparing said operating values with a plurality of predetermined values and engaging said clutch in increments when said predetermined values are exceeded by said operating values and disengaging said clutch in increments when said predetermined values exceed said operating values.
- 18. The adaptive vehicle drive system of claim 17 further including a driven input shaft, a planetary gear speed reducing assembly coupled to said input shaft and having an output member, a clutch for selectively coupling said primary driven output shaft to either said input shaft or said output member of said planetary gear speed reducing assembly, drive means for positioning said clutch and a sensor for providing data to said microcontroller indicating the position of said clutch.
- 19. The adaptive vehicle drive system of claims 17 further including a third sensor for providing an indication to said microcontroller of vehicle brake application and wherein said predetermined values are adjusted in response to said vehicle brake indication and said operating values further include the speed of such vehicle.
- 20. The adaptive vehicle drive system of claim 17 further including a fourth sensor for providing an indication to said microcontroller of the angle of the vehicle steering wheels and adjusting said predetermined values in response to said steering angle indication.
