Claims
- 1. An on-site fillable ferrofluid seal for forming a hermetic seal around a rotatable magnetically-permeable shaft, said seal comprising:
- at least one magnet surrounding said shaft and having an inner diameter larger than the outer diameter of said shaft and generating a magnetic field;
- at least one magnetically-permeable pole piece in magnetic communication with said magnet, said at least one pole piece including a plurality of pole-piece projections extending therefrom toward said shaft;
- a magnetically-permeable rotatable shaft having a plurality of shaft projections of substantially the same size as said pole-piece projections, which shaft projections extend radially from said shaft and are substantially axially aligned with said pole-piece projections to form gaps between the pole-piece projections and the shaft projections in an inter-projection region;
- means for axially displacing said plurality of pole-piece projections a predetermined distance relative to said shaft projections to modify said magnetic field; and
- means for introducing ferrofluid into said interprojection region where said ferrofluid is drawn into all of the inter-projection region by said modified magnetic field.
- 2. The seal of claim 1 wherein said displacing means comprises means for measuring said predetermined distance in order to determine a distance at which said shaft projections have been axially displaced to a position substantially half way between said pole-piece projections.
- 3. The seal of claim 1 wherein said displacing means is responsive to magnetic force exerted on said shaft by said magnet for displacing said shaft to a position where said magnetic force on said shaft reaches a local minimum.
- 4. The seal of claim 1 further comprising at least one channel extending radially from said inter-projection region to allow ferrofluid to be introduced into a location between said shaft projections and said pole-piece projections where said ferrofluid is drawn into said gaps to form liquid O-ring seals around said shaft.
- 5. An on-site fillable ferrofluid seal for forming a hermetic seal around a rotatable magnetically-permeable shaft, said seal comprising:
- at least one magnet surrounding said shaft and having an inner diameter larger than the outer diameter of said shaft and generating a magnetic field;
- a pair of magnetically-permeable pole pieces in magnetic communication with and sandwiching said magnet, each of said pole pieces having a plurality of pole-piece projections, said pole-piece projections extending from said pole pieces towards said shaft;
- a sleeve seated on said magnetically-permeable shaft having a plurality of sleeve projections of substantially the same size as said pole-piece projections, which sleeve projections extend radially from said sleeve and are substantially axially aligned said pole-piece projections to form gaps between the pole-piece projections and the sleeve projections in an inter-projection region;
- means for axially displacing said plurality of pole-piece projections a predetermined distance relative to said sleeve projections to modify said magnetic field in said inter-projection region; and
- means for introducing ferrofluid into a location between said projections where said magnetic field has been modified and said ferrofluid is drawn into all of said inter-projection region.
- 6. The seal of claim 5 wherein said displacing means is responsive to magnetic force exerted on said shaft by said magnet for displacing said shaft to a position where said magnetic force on said shaft reaches a local minimum.
- 7. The seal of claim 5 wherein said displacing means comprises means for measuring said predetermined distance in order to determine a distance at which said sleeve projections have been axially displaced to a position substantially half way between said pole-piece projections.
- 8. The seal of claim 5 further comprising at least one channel extending radially from said inter-projection region to allow ferrofluid to be introduced into a location between said sleeve projections and said pole-piece projections where said ferrofluid is drawn into said gaps to form liquid O-ring seals around said shaft.
