The present disclosure relates to a computer-implemented method for designing a user-specific electronic tattoo and to a tattoo design system configured to perform the method.
The field of wearable electronics is growing. Another approach of providing a user with electronic functions are electronic tattoos. Electronic tattoos regularly comprise an electronic circuit consisting of circuit components and conductive ink such as graphite. Various functions may be integrated into electronic tattoos, such as remote control, medical functions or displaying information. It has been found an approach to combine on-skin electronics with AI-enabled circuit design and machine learning for creative applications to design modular on-skin electronic components in such a way as to balance circuit functionality with the user's desired aesthetic appearance.
A method for designing user-specific electronic tattoos with customized appearance and function is described. The method may enable users to produce electronic tattoos that are both visually appealing and functional. That means, the disclosed concept is designed to enable unskilled users to create functional and aesthetically attractive electronic tattoos. Users without experience in electronics may be able to create wearable circuits from modular components that function effectively. Users may be able to design tattoos that incorporate these circuits unobtrusively into aesthetically pleasing and personalized designs. Less creative users may be able to make electronic tattoo designs that are visually attractive and represent their personal style. In other words, an electronic tattoo design is created in such a way that it incorporates all the necessary electronic components to achieve a user-specified function, while having a visual style and appearance that matches the user's aesthetic goals. Therefore, the method suggests the user to apply specific tattoo components in a specific arrangement in order to produce a specific design of an electronic tattoo. The tattoo components may include electronic components, specifically flexible electronic components, conductive inks, non-conductive inks, and, in examples, a base layer.
Other characteristics will be apparent from the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this disclosure. The drawings are intended to further explain the present disclosure and to enable a person skilled in the art to practice it. However, the drawings are intended as non-limiting examples. Common reference numerals on different figures indicate like or similar features.
Embodiments of the computer-implemented method and the tattoo design system according to the disclosure will be described with reference to the figures as follows.
With reference to
When performing the method, various algorithms such as a circuit design algorithm, a visual design algorithm and, if user instructions are generated, an instruction generation algorithm are applied. The algorithms may be part of the tattoo design system (see,
As schematically depicted in
The physiological data collection system may be part of the tattoo design system. In examples, the physiological data collection system may be a separate device and the tattoo design system may simply communicate, i.e., may be configured to communicate, with the physiological data collection system (see,
With regard to
Thus, if a target location is desired and/or required, the computer-implemented method obtains a target location for application of the electronic tattoo. Physiological data on the target location is collected and the physiological data may then be considered during the further method steps of determining the electronic circuit design and designing the final image of the electronic tattoo. The physiological data may be collected based on the desired function. In other words, if and/or which physiological data is collected is decided based on the desired function. For instance, some desired functions require specific locations, e.g., detecting a pulse point or heart rate monitoring, whilst others, e.g., a sweat sensor does not necessarily require a specific location.
The physiological data is collected via the physiological data collection system. The physiological data collection system may include one or more of a camera, a time of flight (ToF) sensor, acoustic and/or ultrasonic sensing capabilities to collect the physiological data. The physiological data collection system may be comprised in a user device or may be a separate device, e.g., a completely separate device or integrated in the tattoo design system. In other words, the physiological data may be collected via a device, particularly a user device, including one or more of a camera, a time of flight sensor, acoustic and/or ultrasonic sensing capabilities. The user device may be a smartphone. Additionally or alternatively, the user device may use the capabilities of the device to gather the physiological data. The physiological data may gathered through components of the user device including a camera, a time of flight sensor, acoustic and/or ultrasonic sensing capabilities. The physiological data may include one or more or of dimensional or topographical information of a surface of the target location such as area, size and/or curvature, mechanical properties of the surface of the target location, tissue properties of the surface of the target location, e.g., when the target location is a skin surface, i.e., a target skin surface, locations of relevant physiological sensor points, such as pulse points, muscle locations and/or stimulation points. The type of physiological data which is collected may depend on the one or more desired functions.
Instructions may be provided to collect the physiological data. In other words, instructions may be provided on how and which physiological data is to be collected. In examples, instructions for collection physiological data may be provided to the user. Instruction the user may include guiding a user to acquire the physiological data via the user-interface. Instructing the user may include requesting a specific capability to be used to collect a specific type of physiological data. Additionally or alternatively, instructing the user may include requesting a specific area to be scanned. For instance, where the desired function is a heart rate sensor, the physiological data collection system may request that an appropriate sensor, e.g., IR camera, photoplethysmography is used to identify optimum placement of the sensor. The physiological data collection system may further request the user to scan the area of the chest. For instance, where the desired function is a display, the physiological data collection system may request that an appropriate sensor, e.g., camera, ToF sensor, is used to identify a sufficiently large surface area for the display component relative to its known dimensions. In some embodiments, physiological data may be collected automatically.
The desired appearance may be provided by uploading an image file. In some embodiments, the desired appearance may be provided by selecting an image file from the tattoo image database which stores existing tattoo designs. Existing tattoo designs may comprise pre-defined examples, e.g., default examples, or uploaded user-created designs. Additionally or alternatively, salient features, e.g., visual and/or aesthetic features, of the image file may be identified and extracted by image recognition. In examples, the visual and/or aesthetic features may be conveyed into a target image. By extracting salient features and/or key features, e.g., visual and/or aesthetic features, of the image file a conversion into a form to recreate a tattoo may be possible. In some embodiments, the desired appearance may be provided by uploading basic preferences, particularly user preferences. The preferences may regard one or more of shape, size, coloration, style, visual features and/or aesthetic features. In examples, the preferences, particularly the visual and/or aesthetic features, may be conveyed into a target image. For instance, the desired appearance may be provided by uploading a description, e.g., a textual or audio description of the desired appearance. Salient features of basic preferences, particularly visual and/or aesthetic features, are identified and extracted by semantic recognition.
The user-input on the desired appearance may include constraints on the desired appearance. The constraints may define a degree of how close the desired appearance is to be met. For instance, constraint options may include closest possible match or iterative match. In other words, the user may select one of two options of closest possible match or iterative match. For instance, the user may indicate that an uploaded image should be reproduced as closely as possible, i.e., closest possible match. In this case the tattoo components, particularly circuit components and electrical connections, would be incorporated into the known, fixed parameters of the image. For the case of iterative match, the user may, for instance, indicate that the uploaded image is simply an example from which a specific style or feature should be used, or may provide simple textual instructions describing the preferences. In this case the tattoo components, particularly circuit components and electrical connections, would be integrated into the image in a more iterative manner, whereby the image itself may be varied or modified to match with the components more effectively.
After collecting physiological data (if applicable), the electronic circuit design is determined. Therefore, the circuit design algorithm is applied (see,
In some embodiments, optimum circuit component candidates may be pre-selected from the circuit component candidates based on predefined selection metrics. The predefined selection metrics for selecting the optimum circuit component candidates may include one or more of dimensional fit to the desired or determined location, efficiency and/or performance of the electronic circuit, availability of circuit components, and price of circuit components. Dimensional fit can be understood as dimensional fit to the user's body as indicated by the physiological data. Availability of circuit components may be dictated based on, e.g., the user's geographical location, personal skills, electronic tattoo component resources, e.g., circuit components, conductive inks and/or non-conductive inks, and/or technological infrastructure available to the user, e.g., printers. Availability may include the ability to print or produce at site, e.g., ability to print at home, or to purchase the electronic tattoo components. The price may be pre-set by the user. Additional other user preferences may also be used as selection metrics.
Selecting the optimum circuit component candidates may be prioritized by one or more of the predefined selection metrics. Particularly, selecting the optimum circuit component candidates may be prioritized by an order of two or more of predefined selection metrics. For instance, selecting the optimum circuit component candidates may be prioritized by first availability, second best dimensional fit and third price. In examples, it may be prioritized by first, ensuring that only circuit components the user can access are used in the circuit design. Second, by ensuring good function of the circuit within the dimensional constraints of the desired location using the available circuit components. Third, by meeting the user's price or other preferences.
After determining the electronic circuit design, the final image of the electronic tattoo is designed. Therefore, the visual design algorithm is applied (see,
In general, the electronic tattoo may consist of various electronic tattoo components, also referred to as electronic tattoo component resources. These electronic tattoo components may include one or more of circuit components, also referred to as electronic tattoo component devices, conductive inks, also referred to as conductive tattoo component ink, non-conductive inks, also referred to as non-conductive tattoo component ink and a base layer. In examples, the electronic tattoo components comprise at least a circuit component and conductive inks. The base layer may be a plastic or organic substrate which may be known in the art and which may be applied to a user's skin or to another application surface.
Incorporating the circuit parameters into the target image includes selecting final circuit components. That means, final circuit components are selected from the previously identified circuit component candidates, i.e., optimum circuit component candidates and/or circuit component candidates. Selecting final circuit components includes comparing visual and/or aesthetic features of the circuit component candidates, e.g., optimum circuit component candidates and/or circuit component candidates, with the visual and/or aesthetic features of the desired appearance. The visual and/or aesthetic features of the circuit component candidates may include one or more of color, shape and/or size of the circuit component candidates. The visual and/or aesthetic features of the circuit component candidates may be obtained from the component database based on the circuit parameters. Determining the visual and/or aesthetic features of the desired appearance may include applying machine vision techniques analyzing aesthetic/artistic style, color palette and/or image features of an image file provided by the user as user-input on the desired appearance. In some embodiments, determining the visual and/or aesthetic features of the desired appearance may include applying semantics analysis of a non-image based user-input, such as textual input, on the desired appearance.
In some embodiments, selecting final circuit components may further include selecting those circuit components from the circuit component candidates which closest match the visual and/or aesthetic features of the desired appearance based on the comparison. For instance, in embodiments where one desired function requires three different circuit components (each fulfilling a required subfunction), the three closest matching components (which fulfill the three required subfunctions) are selected from the circuit component candidates. In other examples only one final circuit component may be required to fulfill the desired one or more functions. In that case it should be understood that only one final circuit component is selected. That means only that circuit component is selected from the circuit component candidates which closest matches the visual and/or aesthetic features of the desired appearance based on the comparison. In some embodiments, sections of the target image may be altered to match the visual and/or aesthetic features of those circuit components for which no circuit component candidates which match the visual and/or aesthetic features of the desired appearance are present. The comparison may be applied to identify opportunities for integration of the shapes, colorations and sizes of the circuit components in an appropriate and pleasing way to fulfill the user's desired appearance. Circuit component candidate selection may be varied to match the aesthetic properties of the image when components with the same function but different shape, size or coloration are available that more closely match the image requirements. The extent of altering sections may also be dependent on a user's constraints regarding the desired appearance, e.g., closest possible match or iterative match.
Incorporating the circuit parameters into the target image includes placing the final circuit components into the target image. That means, certain aesthetic and/or visual features of the target image are fully or partly replaced by the final circuit parameters. In other words, the final circuit parameters are conveyed into certain aesthetic and/or visual features of the target image, particularly based on the comparison. The final circuit components may be defined as electronic tattoo component devices. The identified electrical connections may be placed into the target image. That means, certain aesthetic and/or visual features of the target image are fully or partly replaced by the conductive ink. In other words, the electrical connections are conveyed into certain aesthetic and/or visual features of the target image. In case there are no adequate aesthetic and/or visual features of the target image being replaced by conductive ink, the target image is altered. The identified electrical connections may be defined as conductive tattoo component ink. When incorporating the electrical connections, the target image may have an impact on routing of the conductive ink and/or choice of the conductive ink. In some embodiments, wherein a specific electrical resistance between two circuit components is needed, an appropriate length of the routing of conductive ink and/or a specific conductive ink are chosen to meet the resistance requirements of the circuit components.
In some embodiments, the user can adjust or edit the aesthetic and/or visual features of the desired appearance at any stage during the method. In some embodiments, the user can adjust or edit the desired location at any stage during the method. Particularly, the functional and/or aesthetic features of the target image and/or the functional and/or aesthetic features of the final image may be adjusted by a user. In some aspects, the user may adjust or edit the desired functions of the electronic tattoo at any stage during the method. In some aspects, the user may be informed of impacts and/or improvements, e.g., improvements to functionality and/or aesthetics, resulting from the user adjustment. For instance, the user may be informed when he/she moves the heart rate sensor to somewhere functionally less optimal to improve the aesthetic design. In some embodiments, the user may be informed during or after conducting adjustments.
In some embodiments, the user-specific electronic tattoo is a temporary tattoo. In other embodiments, the user-specific electronic tattoo is a permanent tattoo. Depending on the material (e.g., ink), the user-specific electronic tattoo is either temporary or permanent. For instance, a temporary tattoo could be designed to be temporarily placed but can be removed and placed back completely on by the user. In some embodiments, the user-specific electronic tattoo comprises circuit components which are reusable but wherein components like conductive tattoo component ink and/or non-conductive tattoo component ink are temporarily. For instance, the design of temporary inks may be changed/adapted before each reuse of the user-specific electronic tattoo, e.g., the reuse of the circuit components.
In some embodiments, user instructions for producing the electronic tattoo are generated. The user instructions may be generated after designing the final image of the electronic tattoo. In other words, user instructions for producing the electronic tattoo are generated based on the final image of the electronic tattoo. Therefore, the instructions generation algorithm is applied (see,
After generating and communicating the user instructions, the user receives the user instructions, acquires the necessary tattoo components and creates the electronic tattoo, for instance on their body at the desired location (or required target location).
In some embodiment, alternatively or additionally to user instructions, the final image of the electronic tattoo may be provided, e.g., visualized, via the user-interface. Additionally or alternatively, user instructions for creation of the electronic tattoo may be provided, e.g., visualized, via the user-interface. Additionally or alternatively, audio instructions may be given to the user.
