Claims
- 1. A one-way valve for an inflatable member having a width and a length defined by overlying first and second film layers, the first and second film layers sealed relative to one another around a perimeter of the inflatable member, the one-way valve comprising:
a third film layer sealed relative to the first film layer by a plurality of seals that define a serpentine flow path between the first and third film layers, the serpentine flow path generally traveling from one side of the inflatable member to the other side of the inflatable member, wherein opposing surfaces of the first and third film layers at a first end of the serpentine flow path are unconnected to define an inlet for an inflation medium between the first and third film layers, and wherein the first and third film layers at a second end of the serpentine flow path are configured to define an outlet in communication with the interior of the inflatable member.
- 2. The one-way valve of claim 1 wherein the third film layer is connected to the first film layer between the first and second film layers, and wherein the outlet is formed by unconnected opposing surfaces of the first and third film layers at the second end of the serpentine flow path.
- 3. The one-way valve of claim 1 wherein the third film layer is connected to an external surface of the first film layer opposite the interior of the inflatable member, the opposing surfaces of the first and third film layers being sealed at the second end of the serpentine flow path, wherein the outlet is formed by an opening in the first film layer near the second end of the serpentine flow path.
- 4. A one-way valve for an inflatable member having a width and a length defined by overlying first and second film layers, the first and second film layers sealed relative to one another around a perimeter of the inflatable member, the one-way valve comprising:
a third film layer having a width coincident with that of the inflatable member, the third film layer having a length less than that of the inflatable member, the third film layer being sealed relative to the first film layer along opposing perimeter edges of the inflatable member, the third film layer having a first surface sealed to the first film layer along a perimeter edge portion of the inflatable member that adjoins the opposing perimeter edges except for a gap sufficient in size to allow an inflation medium to be introduced between the first and third film layers, and means for defining a serpentine flow path for an inflation medium from the gap to an interior of the inflatable member.
- 5. The one-way valve of claim 4 wherein the means for defining a serpentine flow path comprises:
a first heat seal segment between the first and third layers extending partially across the inflatable member in a first direction from a first edge of the opposing perimeter edges, the first heat seal segment being spaced from and generally parallel to the perimeter edge portion of the inflatable member; and a second heat seal segment between the first and third layers extending partially across the inflatable member in a second direction opposite the first direction from a second edge of the opposing perimeter edges, the second heat seal segment being spaced from and generally parallel to the first heat seal segment; and an outlet spaced from the second heat seal segment near the first edge of the opposing perimeter edges, the outlet in communication with the interior of the inflatable member.
- 6. The one-way valve of claim 4 wherein the means for defining a serpentine flow path comprises:
a first passageway between the first layer and the third layer, the first passageway extending between the opposing perimeter edges, the first passageway being in communication with the gap; a second passageway between the first layer and the third layer, the second passageway extending between the opposing perimeter edges adjacent to the first passageway; an opening between the first and second passageways near the second edge of the opposing perimeter edges; and an outlet associated with the second passageway near the first edge of the opposing perimeter edges, the outlet in communication with the interior of the inflatable member.
- 7. The one-way valve of claim 4 wherein the third film layer is connected to a first surface of the first film layer.
- 8. The one-way valve of claim 4 wherein the third film layer is connected to a second surface of the first film layer, and wherein a second surface of the third layer is sealed relative to the second film layer along the perimeter edge portion of the inflatable member.
