Claims
- 1. A clamp, comprising clamping band means having clamping band end portions intended to form overlapping inner and outer band portions in the installed condition, a connection in the end area of the outer band portion and operable to connect overlapping band portions, a tightening device including a plastically deformable ear for tightening the clamping band means about an object to be fastened thereby, a guide arrangement in the end area of the inner clamping band portion for guiding relative movement of the overlapping band portions, and further means preventing installation of the clamp over an oversized object including a lost-motion arrangement in said connection.
- 2. A clamp according to claim 1, wherein said plastically deformable ear requires a predetermined initial plastic deformation to function as tightening device producing predetermined clamping forces.
- 3. A clamp according to claim 2, wherein said ear is defined by two outwardly extending leg portions interconnected by a bridging portion.
- 4. A clamp according to claim 3, wherein said bridging portion is provided with reinforcing means.
- 5. A clamp according to claim 3, wherein said outwardly extending leg portions are substantially parallel to one another.
- 6. A clamp according to claim 3, wherein said outwardly extending leg portions are non-parallel to one another.
- 7. A clamp according to claim 3, wherein the spacing between the inner ends of the leg portions is greater than the length of the bridging portion.
- 8. A clamp according to claim 1, wherein said connection includes two transversely spaced tab-like means bent-up on each side of and forming support hooks in the inner band portion engaging in guide slot means in the outer clamping band portion.
- 9. A clamp according to claim 8, wherein said guide slot means are of greater length in the circumferential direction of the clamp than the tab-like means to realize a lost-motion between overlapping band portions during tightening of the tightening device so as to at least minimize a decrease in the diametric dimension of the clamp during the initial contraction of the tightening device.
- 10. A clamp according to claim 1, wherein the plastically deformable ear requires a predetermined initial plastic deformation for proper functioning when the clamp reaches its dimension dmax of the tolerance range, wherein said connection includes at least one bent-up tab-like member forming a support hook means in the inner clamping band portion engaging in guide slot means in the outer clamping band portion, and wherein each guide slot means is of greater length in the circumferential direction of the clamp than said support hook means to attain a lost motion between said inner and outer clamping band portions during initial contraction of the ear.
- 11. A clamp according to claim 10, wherein the length of said guide slot means is greater than the length of said support hook means by a distance corresponding at most to the tightening distance necessary to realize the initial plastic deformation of said ear.
- 12. A clamp according to claim 11, wherein said support hook means include two transversely spaced support hook means each formed by a bent-up tab-like member on each side of the inner clamping band portion.
- 13. A clamp comprising clamping band means having clamping band end portions intended to form overlapping inner and outer band portions in the installed condition, a connection in the end area of the outer band portion and operable to connect overlapping band portions, a tightening device including a plastically deformable ear for tightening the clamping band means about an object to be fastened thereby, a guide arrangement in the end area of the inner clamping band portion for guiding relative movement of the overlapping band portions, said tightening device forming a gap in the circumferential direction of the clamping band means, means assuring gap-free and stepless internal clamping surfaces of the clamping band means including a male member in the end area of the inner band portion adapted to cooperate with a female member in a step-like portion of the outer band portion, said male member having a width less than the full band width, and further means preventing the installation of the clamp over an oversized object including a lost-motion arrangement in said connection.
- 14. A clamp according to claim 13, wherein said connection includes at least one outwardly extending support means in the inner band portion engaging in a guide slot means in the outer band portion, said guide arrangement having at least one outwardly extending guide member in the end area of the inner clamping band portion engaging in a guide slot, and wherein the outwardly extending guide member and the outwardly extending support means are located in said clamping band means at such a circumferential distance from one another that in the position of said support means engaging said guide slot means in the end area thereof nearer the tightening device, the guide member is in a position engaging said guide slot in the end area thereof nearer the tightening device.
- 15. A clamp according to claim 14, wherein said guide arrangement includes a bent-up tab-like member on each side of the male member, said bent-up tab-like members engaging in two guide slots in the outer band portion.
- 16. A clamp according to claim 14, wherein the beginning of said step-like portions is spaced from the beginning of the male member near the tightening device by a distance substantially equal to the maximum contraction of the ear less a distance corresponding to contraction of the ear producing the lost-motion.
- 17. A clamp according to claim 16, wherein the tab-like members of said male member have a length less than the length of said male member.
- 18. A clamp, comprising clamping band means having clamping band end portions intended to form overlapping inner and outer band portions in the installed condition, a connection operable to connect overlapping band portions, a tightening device including a plastically deformable ear-like means for tightening the clamping band means about an object to be fastened thereby, said tightening device requiring an initial plastic deformation for proper functioning, a guide arrangement in the end area of the inner clamping band portion to guide relative movement of the inner and outer clamping band portions, and further means substantially preventing a decrease in the diametric dimension of the clamp during a portion of the plastic deformation of said ear-like means substantially corresponding to said initial plastic deformation.
- 19. A clamp according to claim 18, wherein said further means includes a lost-motion means having two transversely spaced tab-like means bent-up on each side of and forming support hooks in the inner band portion engaging in guide slot means in the outer clamping band portion.
- 20. A clamp according to claim 19, wherein said guide slot means are of greater length in the circumferential direction of the clamp than the tab-like means to realize a lost-motion between overlapping band portions during tightening of the tightening device so as to at least minimize thereby a decrease in the diametric dimension of the clamp during the lost-motion.
- 21. A clamp according to claim 20, wherein the tightening device is a plastically deformable ear requiring a predetermined initial plastic deformation for proper functioning when the clamp reaches its dimension dmax of the tolerance range, wherein said connection includes at least one bent-up tab-like member forming a support hook means in the inner clamping band portion engaging in guide slot means in the outer clamping band portion, and wherein each guide slot means is of greater length in the circumferential direction of the clamp than said support hook means to attain a lost motion between said inner and outer clamping band portions during contraction of the tightening device corresponding substantially to the initial plastic deformation.
- 22. A clamp according to claim 21, wherein the length of said guide slot means is greater than the length of said support hook means by a distance corresponding at most to the tightening distance necessary to realize the initial plastic deformation of said ear.
- 23. A clamp, comprising clamping band means having clamping band end portions intended to form overlapping inner and outer band portions in the installed condition, a connection operable to connect overlapping band portions, a plastically deformable tightening device for tightening the clamping band means about an object to be fastened thereby, said tightening device requiring an initial plastic deformation for proper functioning, and said connection including a lost-motion means enabling partial contraction of the tightening device during at least a part of the initial plastic deformation substantially without change in the diametric dimension of the clamp.
- 24. A clamp according to claim 23, wherein said lost-motion means includes at least one bent-up tab-like means forming a support hook in the inner band portion engaging in guide slot means in the outer clamping band portion.
- 25. A clamp according to claim 24, wherein said guide slot means are of greater length in the circumferential direction of the clamp than the tab-like means to realize a lost-motion between overlapping band portions during tightening of the tightening device so as to at least minimize thereby a decrease in the diametric dimension of the clamp.
- 26. A clamp according to claim 25, wherein the length of said guide slot means is greater than the length of said support hook means by a distance corresponding at most to the tightening distance necessary to assure substantial completion of the initial plastic deformation.
- 27. A clamp according to claim 23, further comprising a guide arrangement in the end area of the inner clamping band portion including at least one outwardly extending guide member in the inner clamping band portion adapted to engage in a guide slot in the outer clamping band portion, and wherein the distance between said guide slot and said guide slot means is such that the outwardly extending guide member and the tab-like means can engage in the respective guide slot and guide slot means only when the actual diametric dimension of the hose in its non-installed condition is smaller than the diametric dimension do of the clamp.
- 28. A method of manufacturing an open-type clamp which includes a clamping band having clamping band end portions intended to form overlapping inner and outer band portions in the installed condition, a connection with a lost-motion arrangement operable to connect overlapping band portions, a plastically deformable tightening device requiring an initial plastic deformation for proper functioning, and a guide arrangement in the end area of the inner band portion, comprising the steps of determining the amount of plastic deformation necessary to reach the point of the initial plastic deformation, and correlating the amount of lost motion to said amount of plastic deformation.
- 29. A method according to claim 28, further comprising the step of cutting a blank of clamping band material of such size that the maximum diametric dimension of the clamp is at most equal to the size when initial plastic deformation is reached.

[0001] This application is a continuation-in-part application of my Provisional Application Serial No. 60/439,799, filed on Jan. 14, 2003, entitled “Hose Clamp With Internal Clamping Surfaces Devoid Of Gaps, Steps Or Discontinuities And To A Method Of Making The Same,” (D/21588) the subject matter of which is incorporated herein in its entirety by reference. I claim the right of priority of said Provisional Application and its filing date of Jan. 14, 2003, with respect to any common subject matter between the instant application and said Provisional Application.
