Claims
- 1. An method of operating an appliance which can: (a) be employed in a first mode to watch television and in a second mode to obtain coaching on the accomplishment of a task at hand, and (b) comprises a module with a player for a laser readable disc, a screen for displaying information read from said disc, and means for producing a television image on said screen, said method comprising the steps of:
- powering up both said television image producing means and said disc player when said appliance is turned on;
- providing a laser readable disc having stored thereon in digital form: (a) data constituting information for coaching a user of the storage device in accomplishing at least one step of said task; and (b) data comprising an instruction set which enables the user to access the information for accomplishing each of those steps on which information is available;
- providing user manipulatable controls for said television image producing means and for said disc player; and
- providing control means which are separate from said television controls and said disc play controls and which comprise dedicated, user manipulatable control elements for so controlling the operation of the appliance as to cause: (a) commands in said instruction set which are selected by the appliance user to be executed when said appliance is operated in its second, coaching mode of operation, and (b) switch the operation of said appliance between its first, television watching mode of operation and its second, coaching mode of operation.
- 2. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said disc is encoded with data retrievable to present information on accomplishing at least one of said steps in a dynamic visual format.
- 3. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said disc is encoded with data retrievable to present information on accomplishing at least one of said steps in a dynamic audio-visual format.
- 4. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said disc is encoded with data retrievable to present information on accomplishing at least one of said steps in a static textual, graphic, textual-graphic format.
- 5. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said disc is encoded with data providing a hierarchial array of multiple choice menus, the data representing information for accomplishing said step being stored on said disc in correspondence with a choice available from a menu in said hierarchial array.
- 6. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said disc is encoded with data that provides a hierarchial array of multiple choice menus and an instruction set with commands which the user can employ to navigate through said menus.
- 7. A method as defined in claim 5 in which said disc is encoded with data which is retrievable in the form of an introductory video.
- 8. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said instruction set contains a user-retrievable command which enables a user to have the information on a particular step of said task repeated.
- 9. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said instruction set has user-retrievable commands which enable a user to navigate directly from a presentation of information on one step of said task to a presentation of information on a preceding or subsequent step.
- 10. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said instruction set has a user-retrievable command which enables a user to return directly from a presentation of information on a particular step of said task to a display of a top level menu in a hierarchial array of menus or to an introductory video.
- 11. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said instruction set has user-retrievable commands for switching said appliance between: (a) the second, information retrieving and displaying mode of operation; and (b) the first, television watching mode of operation.
- 12. A method as defined in claim 11 in which the command for switching the appliance from the first, television watching mode of operation to the second, information retrieving and displaying mode of operation returns the operation of the appliance to the point at which operation of the appliance in said second mode is interrupted by switching said appliance from operation in that mode to operation in the television receiving mode.
- 13. A method as defined in claim 1 in which said disc is encoded with data which provides a hierarchial array of multiple choice menus and an instruction set with user-retrievable commands for navigating forwards and backwards through said hierarchial array and for selecting choices from said menus.
- 14. A method as defined in claim 1 in which:
- said control means comprises a numerical keypad with multiple actuators; and
- said disc is encoded with data that provides a hierarchial array of multiple choice menus, the choices available from said menus being so encoded that any choice can be made by activating a single actuator of said numerical keypad.
- 15. A method as defined in claim 1 in which:
- said disc is encoded with data that provides a hierarchial array of multiple choice menus and information for accomplishing a step of said task which corresponds to a choice selectable from a menu in the hierarchial array.
- 16. A method as defined in claim 1 in which the encoded data provides a of multiple choice menu and an instruction set that contains a command for so operating said appliance that a selected choice offering a static display of information will remain active until a subsequent command is given by said user.
- 17. A method as defined in claim 1 in which the encoded data provides an asymmetrical multiple choice menu.
- 18. A method as defined in claim 1 in which the encoded data provides a video clip, a multiple choice menu from which the retrieval and display of said video clip can be selected, and an instruction set so coded that said menu is returned to said screen after the display of said video is ended.
- 19. A method as defined in claim 1 in which the encoded data provides a video clip and an instruction set so coded that said video clip is replayed until stopped by the user of the appliance.
- 20. A method as defined in claim 1 in which:
- said control means has a numerical keypad with multiple numbered actuators; and
- said disc is encoded with data providing a multiple choice menu, the choices available from said menu corresponding on a one-to-one basis with the actuators of said numerical keypad.
- 21. A method as defined in claim 1 in which the stored data provides a multiple choice menu and a dynamic display of information which may be selected from the menu, said disc also being so encoded that a display of said menu is returned to said screen at the end of the dynamic display.
