The invention relates to an ophthalmic lens and to a manufacturing method for manufacturing the ophthalmic lens.
It is known to use optical lenses with refractive lens profiles for ophthalmological purposes. Such refractive ophthalmic lenses are typically designed to provide for sharp vision at substantially one particular distance. Hence, the focal point of such lenses is typically quite localized, with a relatively narrow depth of focus, which can be understood as the distance on either side of the point of best focus through which vision is distinct. The narrow depth of focus leads to the problem that the visual acuity at other distances remains unsatisfactory. For instance, a cataract patient who had his natural crystalline lens removed during cataract surgery and replaced by an intraocular ophthalmic lens with a typical refractive surface profile will usually regain sharp vision at only one of far, intermediate and near distances, while he or she will still need to wear glasses for all other distances.
Intraocular lenses allowing for an extended depth of focus have recently become available, wherein various optical concepts have been explored, including diffractive multifocality, refractive multifocality and pinhole designs. While these approaches lead to improvements regarding the visual acuity at more than one distance, there remains the need for extending the depth of focus of an ophthalmic lens, particularly an intraocular lens, towards intermediate vision distances without compromising the visual performance at far vision distances.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an ophthalmic lens having good far vision performance and improved intermediate vision performance.
In a first aspect of the present invention, an ophthalmic lens comprising a lens surface with a lens profile being representable by a combination of a standard aspheric profile and an even-order aspheric profile is provided, wherein the aspheric profiles are combined such that, in a region immediately surrounding the vertex of the lens surface, the lens profile converges to a sum of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile with decreasing radial distance to the vertex and, in an outer region surrounding the vertex, the lens profile converges to the standard aspheric profile with increasing radial distance to the vertex.
It has been found that a lens surface profile which gives rise to an extended depth of focus towards intermediate vision distance can be presented by combining a standard aspheric profile with an even-order aspheric profile if the combination is such that, in a region immediately surrounding the vertex of the lens surface, the lens profile converges to a sum of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile with decreasing radial distance to the vertex and, in an outer region surrounding the vertex, the lens profile converges to the standard aspheric profile with increasing radial distance to the vertex. In particular, an ophthalmic lens having such a surface profile can lead to a focus which is extended towards higher optical powers and thereby provide for an improved visual acuity at intermediate distances without compromising the visual acuity at far distances. The proposed ophthalmic lens surface profile can also lead to a higher insensitivity with respect to decentrations of the lens.
The radial direction is perpendicular to a central axis of the ophthalmic lens, wherein the central axis may be an axis of symmetry, preferably rotational symmetry, of the lens surface. The vertex is the position where the central axis traverses the lens surface.
The aspheric profiles are non-spherical profiles. Hence, the aspheric profiles are preferably profiles having a curvature that is not the same everywhere in radial direction, giving rise to a non-constant distribution of optical powers across the lens surface. The standard aspheric profile preferably has the form of a conic section, particularly of a parabola. More specifically, the standard aspheric profile may correspond to a conic section as disclosed, for example, in the textbook “Modern Optical Engineering” by W. J. Smith (McGraw-Hill, 2000) or in the user manual of the ray-tracing software Zemax OpticStudio, version 19.4 (Zemax LLC, 2019).
The even-order aspheric profile is preferably given by a polynomial function of the radial distance having only even-order terms. Hence, for instance, the standard aspheric profile differs from the even-order aspheric profile in that the standard aspheric profile cannot be accurately described by a polynomial function, in particular, not even by a rational function.
The combination of the aspheric profiles refers to a combination applying preferentially to the whole lens profile. This is to say, if the lens profile is represented by a combination of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile, for instance, the sag of every point of the lens profile can be represented as a combination of a corresponding point sag of the standard aspheric profile and a corresponding point sag of the even-order aspheric profile. In an embodiment, the lens profile can be represented by a function of the radial distance to the vertex, wherein the function depends on a first aspheric function describing the standard aspheric profile and a second aspheric function describing the even-order aspheric profile, such that the value of the function describing the lens profile at any radial distance is given by a linear combination of the value of the first aspheric function and the value of the second aspheric function at that radial distance. The function representing the lens profile can be a sag function, for instance.
Preferably, therefore, the lens profile of the lens surface of the ophthalmic lens can be understood as defining a single refractive zone, wherein the refractive power varies across the zone.
The convergence of the lens profile to a sum of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile with decreasing radial distance to the vertex is preferably a convergence in an inner region surrounding the vertex, particularly in a neighborhood of the vertex. Hence, the lens profile may be viewed as varying between being approximately described by a sum of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile in the inner region surrounding the vertex, particularly the neighborhood of the vertex, towards being approximately described by the standard aspheric profile in the outer region surrounding the vertex. The outer region surrounding the vertex is preferably a neighborhood of an outer boundary of the lens surface. The convergence of the lens profile can be tested for a given function of the radial distance representing the lens profile by, for instance, expanding the function in a power series in the radial distance at a) the vertex and b) the outer boundary of the lens surface and comparing the terms in the power series to corresponding terms in a power series of a standard aspheric profile function, particularly at least the first two non-constant terms. Alternatively, the given function may be expressed in terms of a standard aspheric profile function and a remaining part, wherein the limits of the remaining part may be determined for a) the vertex and b) the outer boundary of the lens surface.
In an embodiment, the combination of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile is representable by a smooth function of the radial position, i.e. of the radial distance to the vertex. This can lead to reduced optical aberrations, which may cause photic phenomena. A smooth function is understood herein as a function whose second derivative does not comprise any kinks, or, whose third derivative is continuous. In particular, the smooth function may be understood as a function whose derivatives are all continuous, i.e., which is infinitely differentiable.
In an embodiment, the combination of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile is representable by a function of the radial position, which has a first order derivative of zero at the vertex of the lens surface. This can avoid negative optical effects that will arise from a kink at the vertex.
In an embodiment, the combination of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile is representable by a function of the radial position, which changes the sign of the second-order derivative with increasing radial position. The ophthalmic lens can in this way be particularly insensitive against decentrations, i.e. deviations of its central axis from the optical axis. Also, an insensitivity against a tilt of the lens with respect to the optical axis can be achieved in this way. The insensitivity against decentrations and tilts refers to an insensitivity of optical properties of the lens, such as, for instance, a focal position and a depth of focus of the lens. The optical properties may be measured in terms of a modulation transfer function, particularly a through focus modular transfer function.
Since the optical power associated with the lens profile is related to the second-order derivative of the function representing the phase of a light wave propagating through the lens, assuming that the index of refraction of the lens material is constant, the phase is defined solely by the surface profile of the lens. One may conclude that the change in sign of the second-order derivative of the surface profile with increasing radial position leads to a corresponding change in the optical power along the radial position, i.e. with increasing radial distance to the vertex.
Preferably, the second-order derivative of the function representing the lens profile changes its sign with increasing radial position such that the optical power associated with the lens profile changes from a positive value to a negative value and then back to a positive value with increasing radial position. Furthermore, it is possible that the sign of the second-order derivative of the function representing the lens profile changes with increasing radial position such that the optical power associated with the lens profile changes sign an uneven number of times, the number being, for instance, 3 or 5. The optical power associated with the lens profile may, in particular, be measured relative to its value at the vertex.
It is preferred that the second-order derivative of the function representing the lens profile changes its sign only in an inner region of the lens surface extending from the vertex to a radial distance to the vertex of less than or equal to two-thirds of the overall radial extent of the lens surface, preferably less than or equal to half of the overall radial extent of the lens surface. If the lens is an intraocular lens, the overall radial extent of the lens surface may reach approximately 3 mm, for instance.
In a preferred embodiment, the sag function of the standard aspheric profile is defined by
wherein r denotes the radial distance to the vertex of the lens surface, c denotes the curvature at the vertex of the lens surface and k denotes the conic constant. The conic constant k is preferably negative. The curvature c at the vertex of the lens surface is preferably positive. In an embodiment, the curvature c at the vertex of the lens surface is a) larger than or equal to 0.005 mm−1 and b) smaller than or equal to 0.25 mm−1. In a preferred embodiment, the curvature c at the vertex of the lens surface is a) larger than or equal to 0.005 mm−1 and b) smaller than or equal to 0.08 mm−1. Moreover, the conic constant k is preferably a) larger than or equal to −800 and b) smaller than or equal to 5. In a preferred embodiment, the conic constant k is a) larger than or equal to −800 and b) smaller than or equal to −5. It has been found that using such a standard aspheric profile allows for a further improved optical performance of the ophthalmic lens.
In the present document, a sag function representing a lens profile is understood as a measure of a depth of the lens profile with respect to a constant height given by the axial position of the vertex of the lens surface comprising the lens profile. The same lens profile could, for instance, also be represented by a function measuring the height of the lens surface with respect to a plane virtually intersecting the lens orthogonal to the central axis of the lens and/or the optical axis, wherein this alternative function may be given, for instance, by the difference between a constant and the sag function of the lens profile.
In an embodiment, the sag function of the even-order aspheric profile is defined by
wherein r denotes the radial distance to the vertex of the ophthalmic lens surface and the A2n are constants. Preferably, the change in sign of the second-order derivative of the function representing the lens profile with increasing radial position corresponds to one or more ratios between the constants A2n. The values of the constants A2n preferably range from values at the order of −10−2 to values at the order of 10−2 when given in units of mm−2n+1, respectively. It has been found that using such an even-order aspheric profile also allows for a further improved optical performance of the ophthalmic lens.
In a preferred embodiment, the combination of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile is defined by a combination function, which depends on the radial distance to the vertex such that the contribution of the standard aspheric profile and the contribution of the even-order aspheric profile to the lens profile at a certain radial distance to the vertex depends on the radial distance. Hence, for instance, the sag function of the standard aspheric profile and the sag function of the even-order aspheric profile are not simply proportional to each other, such that the function representing the lens profile is not simply a linear combination of the two sag functions.
In an embodiment, the sag function of the lens profile is defined by

wherein r denotes the radial distance to the vertex of the lens surface, S1(r) denotes a sag function of the standard aspheric profile, S2 (r) denotes a sag function of the even-order aspheric profile and M(r) denotes the combination function. In particular, S1(r) and S2(r) may denote the sag functions given in above equations (1) and (2). The above equation (3) can equivalently be expressed as

The combination function preferably tends to 0 towards the vertex of the lens surface and preferably tends to 1 towards an outer boundary of the lens surface. It is also preferred that the combination function M(r) monotonically increases in the radial direction, i.e. decreases nowhere in the radial direction. It has been found that using such a combination function also allows for a further improved optical performance of the ophthalmic lens.
In an embodiment, the combination function is a smooth function. Preferably, the combination function is defined by

wherein A and ρ are constants. More generally, it is preferred that the combination function increases in an intermediate radial region more rapidly than in an inner and an outer radial region. In an embodiment, the constant A is larger than 2.0 mm−1 and smaller than 10.0 mm−1, and the constant p is larger than 0.3 mm and smaller than 2.5 mm. In a preferred embodiment, the constant A is larger than 4.0 mm−1 and smaller than 7.0 mm−1, and the constant ρ is larger than 0.3 mm and smaller than 2.0 mm. Also these parameters lead to a further improved optical performance of the ophthalmic lens.
Preferentially, the sag function S(r) of the lens profile is determined by the following set of parameter ranges: −800≤k≤5; 0.005 mm−1≤c≤0.25 mm−1; 2.0 mm−1<A<10.0 mm−1; 0.3 mm<ρ<2.5 mm; −1.5×10−2 mm−1<A2<1.5×10−2 mm−1, −1.5×10−2 mm−3<A4<1.5×10−2 mm−3, −9.0×10−3 mm−5<A6<9.0×10−3 mm−5; −2.9×10−2 mm−7<A8<2.9×10−2 mm−7; −3.0×10−2 mm−9<A10<3.0×10−2 mm−9; −1.2×10−4 mm−11<A12<1.2×10−4 mm−11; −1.2×10−4 mm−11<A14<1.2×10−4 mm−11, −1.2×10−4 mm−11<A16<1.2×10−4 mm−11. In a particular embodiment, the sag function S(r) of the lens profile is determined by the following set of parameter ranges: −800≤k≤−5; 0.005 mm−1≤c≤0.08 mm−1; 4.0 mm−1<A<7.0 mm−1; 0.3 mm<ρ<2.0 mm; 8.9×10−5 mm−1<A2<3.0×10−4 mm−1; 8.9×10−3 mm−3<A4<1.2×10−4 mm−3; −9.0×10−3 mm−5<A6<−4.0×10−3 mm−5; −2.9×10−2 mm−7<A8<−2.0×10−2 mm−7; 2.0×10−2 mm−9<A10<2.8×10−2 mm−9; −1.0×10−4 mm−11<A12<1.2×10−4 mm−11; A14=0; A16=0.
In a preferred embodiment, the lens surface with the lens profile is a refractive lens surface. Hence, the lens surface with the lens profile preferably does not comprise any diffractive elements. In this way, the monofocality of the ophthalmic lens can be increased.
In a preferred embodiment, the ophthalmic lens is an intraocular lens. As an intraocular lens, the ophthalmic lens is intended to be placed into the capsular bag of a patient's eye after extracapsular cataract removal so as to function as a refractive medium replacing the natural crystalline lens of the eye. However, the ophthalmic lens may also be another kind of ocular lens, such as a contact lens or even a lens of glasses, i.e. eyeglasses.
In a further aspect of the present invention, a method for manufacturing an ophthalmic lens is presented, wherein the manufacturing method comprises forming a lens profile of a lens surface of the ophthalmic lens such that it is representable by a combination of a standard aspheric profile and an even-order aspheric profile, wherein the aspheric profiles are combined such that, in a region immediately surrounding the vertex of the lens surface, the lens profile converges to a sum of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile with decreasing radial distance to the vertex and, in an outer region surrounding the vertex, the lens profile converges to the standard aspheric profile with increasing radial distance to the vertex.
The lens profile might be formed, for instance, by using a known molding procedure or by another technique generally used for manufacturing lenses. In particular, the lens profile might be formed by cast molding.
In another aspect of the present invention, an ophthalmic lens is presented, which is producible by the manufacturing method.
It shall be understood that the ophthalmic lens of claim 1 and the manufacturing method of claims 15 have similar and/or identically preferred embodiments as defined in the dependent claims.

In step 102 the ophthalmic lens is formed such that a surface of the lens is in accordance with the provided combination of the standard aspheric profile and the even-order aspheric profile. The lens might be formed, for instance, by using a known molding procedure and a known lathe cutting procedure, or by another technique generally used for manufacturing lenses.
Although in above described embodiments, the lenses are rotationally symmetric, the lenses could also have lens surfaces with a toric shape. In that case, a first lens profile could be provided in a first radial direction of the lens surface and a second lens profile could be provided for a second radial direction of the lens surface, wherein the first and the second radial direction may be perpendicular to each other.
