Claims
- 1. A lyotropic liquid crystal precursor salt complex that is an alkali metal salt of an aryl substituted keto organic acid, the salt having an ionic polar ring complex phase having
- (A) an organic aryl ring structure, and
- (B) a ring formed from the keto group of the organic acid portion, intervening ring-members, and the alkali metal ion, the ring having at least 5 members in which the alkali metal ion is a ring member that bonds to the keto group to form the ring complex, the complex having the general structure: ##STR2## in which the 5 to 13 member ring is formed from the alkali metal (Me) ring member that bonds to the keto group according to the following structure: ##STR3## where R.sub.M is one or more ring members when the complex ring is a 6 to 13 member ring; and the following structure represents the 5 member ring: ##STR4##
- 2. A salt complex as defined in claim 1 that is an anhydrous salt below a critical water vapor pressure as shown as anhydrous salt MA in FIG. 1.
- 3. A salt complex as defined in claim 1 having a hydrated anisotropic liquid crystal phase as shown for the hydrated MA.sH.sub.2 O in FIG. 1, the s representing a specific molecular ratio and the H.sub.2 O being chemically bonded to MA.
- 4. A salt complex as defined in claim 1 having an isotropic liquid solution phase at a vapor pressure greater than that for the formation of the hydrated salt phase as shown in FIG. 1, the liquid being in equilibrium with the liquid crystal hydrated salt.
- 5. A lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex that is one or more alkali metal salts of an acid of the general formula R--Aryl--CO--X--(CH.sub.2)y--CO.sub.2 H, where R is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or nitro, where Aryl is phenyl, biphenyl, naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, anthracene or pyrene, where X is nitrogen or a single carbon attached to the adjacent methylene carbon atom with a single bond, with the proviso when y is 0, X is --C.dbd.C-- and where y is 0 to 7, the salt being complexed with one or more polymers containing repetitive oxygen-bearing groups along a substantially linear chain, the complex having the general structure: ##STR5## in which the 7 to 13 member ring is formed from the alkali metal (Me) ring member that bonds the keto group according to the following structure: ##STR6## where R.sub.M is two or more ring members when the complex ring is a 7 to 13 member ring.
- 6. A salt complex as defined in claim 5 in which the polymer is selected from a member of the group consisting of polyether, polyamide, polyhydroxy, polysulfonic acid and polycarboxyl polymers.
- 7. A lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex as defined in claim 1 comprising one or more alkali metal salts of an acid of the general formula R--Aryl--CO--X--(CH.sub.2).sub.y --CO.sub.2 H, where R is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or nitro, where Aryl is phenyl biphenyl, naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, anthracene or pyrene, where X is a nitrogen or a carbon attached to the adjacent methylene carbon with a single bond, and where y is 0 to 7 with the proviso when y is 0, X is --C.dbd.C--.
- 8. A lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex as defined in claim 1 that includes a lattice modifier which comprises one or more of the alkali metal salts of an acid of the general formula R--CZ--(CH.sub.2)y--CO.sub.2 H, where R is amino, hydroxyl, carboxyl or methyl, where Z is hydrogen, hydroxyl, or a keto, and where y is 0 to 4.
- 9. A lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex as defined in claim 1 in which the salt is optically stabilized through the inclusion of from 1.0 to 3.0% by weight, on the basis of solids of a lattice stabilizer which comprises a low vapor pressure aryl hydrocarbon from the group consisting of: hydrogenated terphenyl, terphenyl, 1, 1-di(ortho-xylyl) ethane, 1, 2, 3, 4 tetramethyl benzene, 1, 2, 3, 5 tetramethyl benzene, 1, 2, 4, 5 tetramethyl benzene, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 pentamethyl-benzene, and cyclohexylbenzene.
- 10. A lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex as defined in claim 1 in which the salt is optically stabilized through the inclusion of from 0.1 to 0.3% by weight, on the basis of solids, of a lattice stabilizer from the group consisting of alkali metal perfluoroalkyl sulfonates, carboxylates, and acid phosphates, whose fluorocarbon chains contain 3 to 5 carbons.
- 11. A lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex as defined in claim 1 in which the salt is complexed with from 0.4 to 5.0 mol percent of the metals present of a water-soluble salt of a polyvalent cation selected from the group consisting of Cu.sup.++, Ni.sup.++, Co.sup.++ Mn.sup.++, Al.sup.+++, Zn.sup.++, and Cr.sup.+++, and in which each 8% of alkali metal sensor salt is complexed with from 2.0 to 8.0% by weight of a polymer which has repetitive carboxyl groups whose acidic hydrogen have been replaced by alkali metal cations, and in which the chemical compositon is complexed with an alkali metal borate in an amount from 0.25 to 10.0 mol percent of the metals present.
- 12. A lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex as defined in claim 1 in which the salt comprises an alkali metal salt of 3-benzoylpropionic acid.
- 13. A lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex as defined in claim 1 in which the salt comprises mixtures of the alkali metal salts of 3-benzoylpropionic acid.
- 14. A lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex as defined in claim 1 in which the salt comprises an alkali metal salt of 3-(4-ethylbenzoyl) propionic acid.
- 15. A complex as defined in claim 1 in which the complex comprises mixtures of the alkali metal salts of 3-(4-ethylbenzoyl) propionic acid.
- 16. A complex as defined in claim 1 that is the crystalline, birefringent alkali metal salt complex of 3-benzoylpropionic acid in which the alkali metal is selected from a member of the group consisting of lithium, potassium, rubidium and cesium.
- 17. A complex as defined in claim 1 that is the crystalline, birefringent alkali metal salt complex of 3-(4-ethylbenzoyl) propionic acid.
- 18. A lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex that is an alkali metal salt of an acid having an organic ring structure portion that is hydrophobic and an ionic polar head ring complex phase portion that is hydrophilic, the acid having a main chain of carbon atoms or carbon atoms and a nitrogen atom, the polar ring complex phase having a ring formed from the keto group of the acid portion, intervening ring members, and an alkali metal ion, the complex having the general structure: ##STR7## in which the 5 to 13 member ring is formed from the alkali metal (Me) ring member that bonds to the keto group according to the following structure: ##STR8## where R.sub.M is one or more ring members when the ring is a 6 to 13 member ring; and the following structure represents the 5 member ring: ##STR9##
- 19. A salt complex as defined in claim 18 that is anhydrous.
- 20. A salt complex as defined in claim 18 that is hydrated.
- 21. A salt complex as defined in claim 18 that is liquid.
- 22. An anhydrous precursor lyotropic liquid crystal salt complex that is an ahydrous alkali metal salt complex of an acid of the general formula:
- R--Aryl--CO--X--(CH.sub.2).sub.y --CO.sub.2 H
- where R is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or nitro, where Aryl is phenyl biphenyl, napthalene, acenaphthalene, fluorene, anthracene or pyrene and where X is is nitrogen or a carbon attached to the adjacent methylene carbon with a single bond, with the proviso when y is 0, X is --C.dbd.C--, and where y is 0 to 7, the complex having the general structure: ##STR10## in which the 7 to 13 member ring is formed from the alkali metal (Me) ring member that bonds to the keto group according to the following structure: ##STR11## where R.sub.M is two or more ring members when the complex ring is a 7 to 13 member ring.
- 23. A salt complex as defined in claim 22 in which R is alkyl, Aryl is phenyl and X is nitrogen.
- 24. A salt complex as defined in claim 22 in which R is alkyl, Aryl is phenyl and y is 2.
- 25. A salt complex as defined in claim 22 which is an alkali metal salt of an alkyl benzoyl propionic acid.
- 26. A salt complex as defined in claim 22 which is an alkali metal salt of hippuric acid.
- 27. A salt complex as defined in claim 22 which is a sodium salt of hippuric acid.
- 28. A salt complex as defined in claim 18 in which the acid is hippuric acid or an alkyl hippuric acid.
- 29. A salt complex as defined in claim 18 in which the acid is benzoyl propionic acid or an alkyl benzoyl propionic acid.
- 30. A lyotropic liquid crystal complex as defined in claim 18, the salt having a hydrated liquid crystal state and a liquid state, the liquid state being an isotropic solution of the salt in equilibrium with the hydrated liquid crystal salt.
- 31. A salt complex as defined in claim 18 having an anhydrous phase that is a precursor to a liquid crystal state, the salt being an alkali metal salt of benzoyl formic acid.
- 32. A salt complex as defined in claim 22 in which the alkali metal is sodium.
- 33. A salt complex as defined in claim 22 in which the alkali metal is sodium and the acid is an alkyl benzoyl propionic acid or an alkyl hippuric acid.
- 34. A salt complex as defined in claim 22 which is a lithium salt of hippuric acid or alkyl hippuric acid.
- 35. A salt complex as defined in claim 50 which is a lithium salt of benzoyl propionic acid or alkyl benzoyl propionic acid.
