Claims
- 1. An optical disk apparatus for an optical disk including: a user accessible area having a plurality of blocks; flag data recorded on the optical disk, said flag data indicating whether or not each of the blocks is in an erased state in which there is no recorded data; a flag area storing said flag data; and area data recorded on the optical disk, said area data indicating that the optical disk has the flag area,
- said optical disk apparatus comprising:
- decision means for determining whether or not the optical disk has the flag area by referring to the area data;
- reference means, coupled to said decision means, for referring to the flag data in the flag area in response to a write command sent from an external device coupled to the optical disk apparatus;
- erase instruction means, coupled to said decision means and said reference means, for generating an erase instruction with respect to a write subject block when said decision unit determines that the optical disk does not have the flag data, or when the reference means refers to the flag data indicating that the write subject block is not in the erased state;
- first write instruction means, coupled to said reference means and said erase instruction means, for generating a first write instruction with respect to the write subject block when the erase instruction has been executed or when said reference means refers to the flag data indicating that the write subject block is in the erased state; and
- engine means, coupled to said erase instruction means and said first write instruction means, for performing an erasing and writing operation on the optical disk in response to said erase instruction and said first write instruction.
- 2. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:
- read instruction means, coupled to said reference means, for generating a read instruction with respect to a read subject block when said reference means refers to the flag data indicating the read subject block is not in the erased state; and
- second write instruction means, coupled to said reference means and said read instruction means, for generating a second write instruction with respect to the read subject block when said reference means refers to the flag data indicating that the read subject block is in the erased state and for making said read instruction means generate said read instruction after data is written into the read subject block in response to the second write instruction,
- said engine means comprising read means for reading data from the optical disk in response to the read instruction.
- 3. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- the optical disk apparatus comprises memory means for storing the flag data transferred thereto from the optical disk when the optical disk is loaded to the optical disk apparatus; and
- said reference means comprises means for referring to the flag data stored in the memory means.
- 4. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 3, wherein said memory means comprises a semiconductor memory.
- 5. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 3, further comprising rewriting means for updating the flag data related to the write subject block and stored in the memory means so that the flag data related to the write subject block indicates the write subject block is not in the erased state, when the data has been written into the write subject block in response to the first write instruction.
- 6. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 3, further comprising second write instruction means for generating a second write instruction which requests to write the flag data stored in the memory means into the flag area on the optical disk during an idle time in which an access to the optical disk is being not carried out.
- 7. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 3, further comprising second write instruction means for generating a second write instruction which requests to write the flag data stored in the memory means into the flag area on the optical immediately before the optical disk is ejected from the optical disk apparatus.
- 8. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 3, wherein:
- said memory means comprises a data area for storing identification information indicating blocks which are switched from the erased state to a recorded state in which data have been recorded on said blocks; and
- the optical disk apparatus further comprising rewriting means for updating the flag data related to the write subject block and stored in the memory means so that the flag data related to the write subject block indicates the write subject block is not in the erased state and for writing said identification information into the data area, when the data has been written into the write subject block in response to the first write instruction.
- 9. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 8, further comprising second write instruction means for generating a second write instruction which requests to write the identification information stored in the data area of said memory means into the flag area on the optical disk.
- 10. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further comprising initializing means for erasing data recorded on the user accessible area and for recording the flag data and the area data on the user accessible area.
- 11. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 10, further comprising switch means for specifying either a normal mode or an initialization mode,
- wherein:
- the optical disk apparatus is coupled to the host computer in the normal mode; and
- the initializing means is enabled in the initialization mode in which the optical disk apparatus is disconnected from the host computer.
- 12. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 11, wherein said switch means comprises:
- a switch; and
- decision means, coupled to said switch and said initializing means, for determining whether the normal mode or the initialization mode should be selected on the basis of how many times said switch is operated.
- 13. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 12, wherein said decision means comprises means for making said switch means select the initialization mode when the switch is operated a first number of times and for making said initializing means erase the data recorded on the user accessible area when the switch is operated a second number of times.
- 14. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 10, wherein said initializing means comprises first means for specifying an area in the user accessible area which should be subjected to the erasing operation under control of the initializing means.
- 15. The optical disk apparatus as claimed in claim 10, wherein said initializing means comprises second means for displaying information concerning said area specified by said first means.
