Claims
- 1. An optical drive system, comprising:
- an objective lens subassembly for directing light from a light source toward an information storage medium, an amount of said light being returned therefrom;
- an objective lens disposed in said objective lens subassembly;
- at least one quad detector for detecting light returned from the storage medium;
- processing circuitry connected to said at least one quad detector to produce a Quad Sum signal related to the light detected by the quad detector;
- a first servomotor for moving said objective lens subassembly to effect focus capture, said first servomotor moving said objective lens to a first position, then away from said first position toward said storage medium while the medium is being read and said processing circuitry searches for a maximum Quad Sum signal, said first servomotor also moving said lens back away from said storage medium;
- first electronic means for controlling said first servomotor; and
- servo error detecting means including said at least one quad detector, said servo error detecting means being coupled to said first electronic means and implemented for determining when total light returned from said information storage medium exceeds a predetermined measured value, for searching for a first zero crossing, for determining when said Quad Sum signal exceeds a predetermined amplitude, and for indicating to said first electronic means to direct close of focus when said Quad Sum signal exceeds said predetermined amplitude.
- 2. The optical drive system according to claim 1 further including an optical assembly positioned to divide said return light into a transmitted beam and a reflected beam.
- 3. The optical drive system according to claim 2 wherein said light source transmits light through said optical assembly.
- 4. The optical drive system according to claim 3 further including second electronic means responsive to an output signal of said at least one quad detector for decoding information carried in said returning light.
- 5. The optical drive system according to claim 4 further including second electronic means for enabling said light source to emit at a first power level for encoding information on the storage medium and at a second power level for reading information encoded thereon.
- 6. The optical drive system according to claim 5 further including write means coacting with said second electronic means for writing information on to said storage medium.
- 7. The optical drive system according to claim 6 wherein said write means includes a magnetic field generator for producing a magnetic field on a portion of said storage medium, said magnetic field generator coacting with said second electronic means and said light source to write and erase information on said storage medium.
- 8. The optical drive system according to claim 5 wherein said first power level includes a first write power level, a second write power level, and a third write power level.
- 9. The optical drive system according to claim 5 wherein said second electronic means includes a switch for passing electrical current to said light source and digital logic means for power switching said switch to drive said light source so that electrical power is consumed only when said light source is energized and enhanced rise and fall switching characteristics are achieved.
- 10. The optical drive system according to claim 9 wherein said digital logic means includes CMOS buffers.
- 11. The optical drive system according to claim 10 wherein said CMOS buffers are connected between electrical ground and full supply voltage.
- 12. The optical drive system according to claim 9 wherein said switch includes pass transistor.
- 13. The optical drive system according to claim 9 wherein said predetermined amplitude of said Quad Sum signal is one-half a peak thereof.
- 14. The optical drive system according to claim 3 wherein said light source is a laser.
- 15. The optical drive system according to either claim 1, 2, or 3 further including an actuator assembly suspending said objective lens subassembly for relative motion with respect thereto.
- 16. The optical drive system according to claim 15 further including a second servomotor for moving said objective lens subassembly in a focusing direction relative said actuator assembly.
- 17. The optical drive system according to claim 15 further including a second servomotor for moving said actuator assembly in said tracking direction relative said storage medium.
- 18. The optical drive system according to claim 15 wherein said first servomotor also moves said objective lens subassembly in a tracking direction relative to said actuator assembly.
- 19. The optical drive system according to either claim 1, 2, or 3 further including a motor for moving said information storage medium relative to said objective lens subassembly.
- 20. The optical drive system according to claim 19 wherein said motor for moving said information storage medium includes a hub assembly.
- 21. The optical drive system according to claim 20 further including a cartridge loading assembly for removably positioning said storage medium on said hub assembly of said motor.
- 22. The optical drive system according to either claim 1, 2, or 3 further including data receiving means for accepting data to be stored on said storage medium.
- 23. The optical drive system according to claim 22 further including data encoding means responsive to said data receiving means for representing said data to be stored in a predetermined format.
- 24. The optical drive system according to either claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein said predetermined measured value is one-half of a peak value of said total return light received from said storage medium.
- 25. An optical drive system, comprising:
- an objective lens subassembly for directing light from a light source toward an information storage medium, an amount of said light being returned therefrom;
- an objective lens disposed in said objective lens subassembly;
- at least one quad detector for detecting light returned from the storage medium;
- processing circuitry connected to said at least one quad detector to produce a Quad Sum signal related to the light detected by the quad detector;
- a first servomotor for moving, during focus capture, said objective lens to a first position, for moving said lens away from said first position toward said storage medium while the medium is being read and said processing circuitry searches for a maximum Quad Sum signal, and for moving said lens back away from said storage medium;
- an electronic control circuit connected to said first servomotor; and
- a servo error detector including said at least one quad detector, said servo error detector being coupled to said electronic control circuit, said servo error detector, electronic control circuit, and processing circuitry implemented to determine when total light returned from said information storage medium exceeds a predetermined value, to search for a first zero crossing, to determine when said Quad Sum signal exceeds a predetermined amplitude, and to activate said electronic control circuit to direct close of focus when said Quad Sum signal exceeds said predetermined amplitude.
- 26. The optical drive system according to claim 25 further including an optical assembly positioned to divide said return light into a transmitted beam and a reflected beam.
- 27. The optical drive system according to claim 26 wherein said light source transmits light through said optical assembly.
- 28. The optical drive system according to either claim 25, 26, or 27 further including an actuator assembly suspending said objective lens subassembly for relative motion with respect thereto.
- 29. The optical drive system according to claim 28 further including a second servomotor for moving said objective lens subassembly in a focusing direction relative said actuator assembly.
- 30. The optical drive system according to claim 28 further including a second servomotor for moving said actuator assembly in said tracking direction relative said storage medium.
- 31. The optical drive system according to claim 28 wherein said first servomotor also moves said objective lens subassembly in a tracking direction relative to said actuator assembly.
- 32. The optical drive system according to claim 27 further including electronic processing circuitry responsive to an output signal of said at least one quad detector for decoding information carried in said returning light.
- 33. The optical drive system according to claim 27 further including electronic processing circuitry for enabling said light source to emit at a first power level for encoding information on the storage medium and at a second power level for reading information encoded thereon.
- 34. The optical drive system according to claim 33 further including a write member connected to said electronic processing circuitry for writing information on to said storage medium.
- 35. The optical drive system according to claim 34 wherein said write member includes a magnetic field generator for producing a magnetic field on a portion of said storage medium, said magnetic field generator coacting with said electronic processing circuitry and said light source to write and erase information on said storage medium.
- 36. The optical drive system according to claim 33 wherein said first power level includes a first write power level, a second write power level, and a third write power level.
- 37. The optical drive system according to claim 33 wherein said electronic processing circuitry includes a switch for passing electrical current to said light source and a digital logic assembly for power switching said switch to drive said light source so that electrical power is consumed only when said light source is energized and enhanced rise and fall switching characteristics are achieved.
- 38. The optical drive system according to claim 37 wherein said digital logic assembly includes CMOS buffers.
- 39. The optical drive system according to claim 38 wherein said CMOS buffers are connected between electrical ground and full supply voltage.
- 40. The optical drive system according to claim 37 wherein said switch includes pass transistors.
- 41. The optical drive system according to claim 37 wherein said predetermined amplitude of said Quad Sum signal is one-half a peak thereof.
- 42. The optical drive system according to claim 27 wherein said light source is a laser.
- 43. The optical drive system according to either claim 25, 26, or 27 further including a motor for moving said information storage medium relative to said objective lens subassembly.
- 44. The optical drive system according to claim 43 wherein said motor for moving said information storage medium includes a hub assembly.
- 45. The optical drive system according to claim 44 further including a cartridge loading assembly for removably positioning said storage medium on said hub assembly of said motor.
- 46. The optical drive system according to either claim 25, 26, or 27 further including a data receiver connected to accept data to be stored on said storage medium.
- 47. The optical drive system according to claim 46 further including a data encoder responsive to said data receiver to represent said data to be stored in a predetermined format.
- 48. The optical drive system according to either claim 25, 26, or 27 wherein said predetermined measured value is one-half of a peak value of said total return light received from said storage medium.
- 49. The optical drive system according to either claim 1 or 25 wherein said first servomotor also moves said objective lens subassembly in a tracking direction relative to said actuator assembly.
- 50. The optical drive system according to either claim 2 or 26 including a first quad detector and a second quad detector.
- 51. The optical drive system according to claim 50 wherein said transmitted beam is directed toward said first quad detector and said reflected beam is directed toward said second quad detector.
- 52. The optical drive system according to any one of claims 1, 2, 3, 26, or 27 wherein said return light includes a servo beam.
