Claims
- 1. Coding of information comprising contrasting properties arranged to define first and second machine-detectable code elements, said code elements being arranged in overall patterns having opposed ends, said first and second code elements being interpretable to define contrasting logic levels, each of said patterns including a start pattern of code elements, an end pattern of code elements and a plurality of code elements representing given information between said start and end patterns, pairs of said plurality of code elements comprising both a first code element and a second code element which together define either a first character or a second character depending upon the order in the pair of the first and second code elements, said start pattern and said end pattern each including an end code element at each of said opposed ends of said overall pattern, both end code elements being either first code elements or second code elements, and said steal pattern of code elements and said end pattern of code elements being distinguishable from any part of the pattern of code elements of said plurality of code elements between said start pattern and said end pattern after being machine detected, said code elements between said start and end patterns being arranged so that after they are machine detected said given information may be obtained from them.
- 2. The coding according to claim 1 wherein said start and said end patterns are distinguishable from each other after being machine detected.
- 3. The coding according to claim 1 wherein said start pattern and said end pattern each have a different number of code elements from the other, which at least facilitates distinguishing them from each other after being machine-detected.
- 4. The coding according to claim 1 wherein the code elements of said start pattern and said end pattern are arranged such that three consecutive code elements of the same logic level do not occur within the start and end patterns and the plurality of code elements adjacent thereto.
- 5. The coding according to claim 1 wherein the patterns are bar code patterns, the code elements being optically contrasting.
- 6. The coding according to claim 5 wherein the bar code patterns are situated on a background, said end code elements each being optically contrasted from said background.
- 7. The coding according to claim 6, wherein the contrasting code elements are white and black, the background is closer to white that to black, and the end code elements are black.
- 8. The coding according to claim 1 wherein said plurality of code elements include code elements representing self-defining formats located in predefined positions of said plurality of code elements between said start and said end patterns.
- 9. Coding of information in bar code patterns comprising optically contrasting properties arranged to define first and second machine-detectable code elements, said code elements being arranged in overall bar code patterns having opposed ends, said first and second code elements being interpretable to define contrasting logic levels, each of said bar code patterns including a start pattern of code elements, an end pattern of code elements and a plurality of code elements representing given information between said start and end patterns, pairs of said plurality of code elements comprising both a first code element and a second code element which together define either a first character or a second character depending upon the order in the pair of the first and second code elements, said start pattern and said end pattern each including an end code element at each of said opposed ends of said overall bar code pattern, both end code elements being either first code elements or second code elements, and said start pattern of code elements and said end pattern of code elements each including at least four code elements and being distinguishable from each other and from any part of the pattern of code elements of said plurality of code elements between said start pattern and said end pattern after being machine detected, said code elements between said start and said patterns being arranged so that after they are machine detected said given information may be obtained from them.
- 10. The coding according to claim 9 wherein said start pattern and said end pattern each have a different number of code elements from the other, which at least facilitates distinguishing them from each other after being machine detected.
- 11. The coding according to claim 9 wherein said start pattern and said end pattern each include adjacent said plurality of code elements representing given information a pair of code elements of contrasting logic levels such that three consecutive code elements of the same logic level do not occur within the start and end patterns and the plurality of code elements adjacent thereto.
- 12. The coding according to claim 9 wherein the bar code patterns are situated on a background, said end code elements each being optically contrasted from said background.
- 13. The coding according to claim 12, wherein the contrasting code elements are white and black, the background is closer to white that to black, and the end code elements are black.
- 14. The coding according to claim 9 wherein said plurality of code elements include code elements representing self-defining formats located in predefined positions of said plurality of code elements between said start and said end patterns.
- 15. Coding of information comprising contrasting properties arranged to define first and second machine-detectable code elements, said code elements being arranged in overall patterns having opposed ends, said first and second code elements being interpretable to define contrasting logic levels, each of said patterns including a start pattern of code elements, an end pattern of code elements and a plurality of code elements representing given information between said start and end patterns, pairs of said plurality of code elements comprising both a first code element and a second code element which together define either a first character or a second character depending upon the order in the pair of the first and second code elements, said start pattern and said end pattern each including an end code element at each of said opposed ends of said overall pattern, both end code elements being either first code elements or second code elements, and said start pattern of code elements and said end pattern of code elements being distinguishable from each other and from said plurality of code elements between said start pattern and said end pattern after being machine detected, said start pattern and said end pattern each including at least four code elements arranged such that three consecutive code elements of the same logic level do not occur within the start and end patterns and the plurality of code elements adjacent thereto, said code elements between said start and said end patterns being arranged so that after they are machine detected said given information may be obtained from them.
- 16. The coding according to claim 15 wherein said start pattern and said end pattern each have a different number of code elements from the other, which at least facilitates distinguishing them from each other after being machine detected.
- 17. The coding according to claim 15 wherein the patterns are bar code patterns, the code elements being optically contrasting.
- 18. The coding according to claim 17 wherein the bar code patterns are situated on a background, said end code elements each being optically contrasted from said background.
- 19. The coding according to claim 18, wherein the contrasting code elements are white and black, the background is closer to white that to black, and the end code elements are black.
- 20. The coding according to claim 15 wherein said plurality of code elements include code elements representing self-defining formats located in predefined positions of said plurality of code elements between said start and said end patterns.
- 21. A method of coding information comprised of contrasting properties arranged to define first and second machine-detectable code elements interpretable after being machine-detected to define contrasting logic levels, comprising arranging said code elements in overall patterns having opposed ends including a start pattern of code elements, an end pattern of code elements and a plurality of code elements representing given information between said start and end patterns, as follows:
- pairs of said plurality of code elements comprising both a first code element and a second code element which together define either a first character or a second character depending upon the order in the pair of the first and second code elements;
- said start pattern and said end pattern each including an end code element at each of said opposed ends of said overall pattern, both end code elements being either first code elements or second code elements;
- said start pattern of code elements and said end pattern of code elements being distinguishable from any part of the pattern of code elements of said plurality of code elements between said start pattern and said end pattern after being machine detected;
- said given information may be obtained from said code elements between said start and said end patterns after they are machine-detected.
- 22. The method according to claim 21 wherein said code elements are further arranged so that said start and said end patterns are distinguishable from each other after being machine-detected.
- 23. The method according to claim 21 wherein said code elements are further arranged so that said start pattern and said end pattern each have a different number of code elements from the other, which at least facilitates distinguishing them from each other after being machine-detected.
- 24. The method according to claim 21 wherein said start pattern and said end pattern each include adjacent said plurality of code elements representing given information a pair of code elements of contrasting logic levels such that said three consecutive code elements of the same logic level do not occur within the start and end patterns and the plurality of code elements adjacent thereto.
- 25. The method according to claim 21 wherein said code elements are optically contrasting and are further arranged so that the patterns are bar code patterns.
- 26. The method according to claim 25 comprising arranging the bar code patterns on a background with said end code elements each being optically contrasted from said background.
- 27. The method according to claim 26, wherein the contrasting code elements are white and black, the background is closer to white that to black, and the end code elements are black.
- 28. The method according to claim 21 wherein said code elements are further arranged so that said plurality of code elements include code elements representing self-defining formats located in predefined positions of said plurality of code elements between said start and said end patterns.
- 29. The method according to claim 21 comprising decoding said code elements after they are machine detected to obtain said given information.
- 30. The method of claim 21 comprising arranging the code elements within said start pattern of code elements and said end pattern of code element such that three consecutive code elements of the same logic level do not occur within the start and end patterns and the plurality of code elements adjacent thereto.
- 31. The method of claim 21 comprising providing at least four code elements in said start and said end patterns of code elements.
- 32. Coding of information comprising contrasting properties arranged to define first and second machine-detectable code elements, said code elements being arranged in overall patterns having opposed ends, said first and second code elements being interpretable to define contrasting logic levels, each of said patterns including a start pattern of code elements, an end pattern of code elements and a plurality of code elements representing given information between said start and end patterns, pairs of said plurality of code elements comprising both a first code element and a second code element which together define either a first character or a second character depending upon the order in the pair of the first and second code elements, said start pattern and said end pattern each including an end code element at each of said opposed ends of said overall pattern, both end code elements being either first code elements or second code elements, and said start pattern of code elements and said end pattern of code elements each including at least four code elements and being distinguishable from any part of the pattern of code elements of said plurality of code elements between said start pattern and said end pattern after being machine detected, said code elements between said start and end patterns being arranged so that after they are machine detected said given information may be obtained from them.

No. 853,745, filed Apr. 18, 1986, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,814,589, titled, INFORMATION TRANSFER AND USE, PARTICULARLY WITH RESPECT TO OBJECTS SUCH AS GAMBLING CHIPS," and application Ser. No. 919,502 is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 109,075, filed Oct. 16, 1987, titled "SELF-CORRECTING REGISTERS, ERROR DETECTING/CORRECTING REGISTERS, AND INVERSION CODING USING ONE BIT, AND OTHER INFORMATION STORAGE MEDIA," which is a continuation-in-part of the said U.S. Pat. No. 4,814,589, the disclosures of all of which are incorporated herein by reference.
