Claims
- 1. An amplifying optical element within a signal-carrying system, comprising:
a) a dielectric optical waveguide transmitting a signal and capable of excitation; b) an optical excitation source, said excitation source being physically integrated with and immediately adjacent to and surrounding said optical waveguide, said excitation source being capable of emitting sufficient light to enable power gain of said signal; and c) an external power source electrically connected to said optical excitation source for initiating and maintaining said light emission.
- 2. The amplifying optical element of claim 1 wherein said optical waveguide comprises an optical fiber.
- 3. The amplifying optical element of claim 2 wherein the optical fiber is doped with a rare earth element.
- 4. The amplifying optical element of claim 3 wherein the optical fiber is doped with erbium.
- 5. The amplifying optical element of claim 1 wherein said optical excitation source comprises an electrically conductive structure immediately adjacent to and surrounding the waveguide, the electrically conductive structure comprising at least one electroluminescent layer.
- 6. The amplifying optical element of claim 5 wherein the optical excitation source comprises a multilayer electrically conductive structure comprising:
a) a first layer immediately adjacent to the waveguide, the first layer comprising a transparent, electrically conductive material; b) a second layer adjacent to the first layer, the second layer comprising an electroluminescent material; and c) a third layer adjacent to the second layer, the third layer comprising an electrically conductive material.
- 7. The amplifying optical element of claim 6 further including a buffer layer sandwiched between and immediately adjacent to the first and second layers of the optical excitation source.
- 8. The amplifying optical element of claim 6 further including a buffer layer sandwiched between and immediately adjacent to the second and third layers of the optical excitation source.
- 9. The amplifying optical element of claim 6 wherein the electrically conductive material of the third layer comprises a reflective electrically conductive material.
- 10. An amplifying optical element within a signal-carrying system, comprising:
a dielectric optical waveguide transmitting a signal and capable of excitation; and an optical excitation source, said excitation source being physically integrated with and immediately adjacent to and surrounding said optical waveguide, said excitation source being capable of emitting sufficient light to enable power gain of said signal.
- 11. The amplifying optical element of claim 10 wherein said optical excitation source comprises a microring laser.
- 12. The amplifying optical element of claim 11 further comprising means for optically exciting said microring laser.
