Claims
- 1. An optical fiber comprising:
a core having an index of refraction; a cladding surrounding said core and having a first index of refraction that is less than said index of refraction; a layer surrounding said cladding; said cladding including first and second adjacent sides forming a vertex that is fused to said layer; and wherein said first side of said cladding partially defines a first region that is between the cladding and the layer and the second side of said cladding partially defines a different region that is between said cladding and said layer, each of said regions comprising an index of refraction that is different than said first index of refraction.
- 2. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein at least one of said regions has a D-shaped cross section.
- 3. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein at least one of said regions comprises a void.
- 4. The optical fiber of claim 3 wherein said void is evacuated.
- 5. The optical fiber of claim 3 wherein said void contains a gas.
- 6. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein at least one of said regions contains a solid material.
- 7. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein at least one of said sides includes a portion that is curved.
- 8. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein said core comprises rare earth ions.
- 9. The optical fiber of claim 8 wherein said rare earth ions include ytterbium ions.
- 10. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein said cladding comprises a substantially square cross section.
- 11. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein said cladding comprises a cross section in the shape of a convex polygon.
- 12. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein said layer comprises a glass and comprises a second index of refraction that is less than said first index of refraction.
- 13. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein said layer has an inner surface having a circular cross section.
- 14. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein said layer has an inner surface, and wherein said cladding occupies at least about 60% of the area inside said inner surface of said layer.
- 15. An optical fiber comprising:
a core comprising an index of refraction; a cladding surrounding said core for propagating pump energy along said fiber for intersection with said core, said cladding comprising a first index of refraction that is less than said index of refraction of said core; a layer surrounding and contacting said cladding, said layer having a second index of refraction that is less than said first index of refraction of said cladding, said layer partially defining a region between said cladding and said layer, said region having an index of refraction that is different than said first index of refraction of said cladding; and another layer surrounding said layer, said another layer comprising a third index of refraction than is less than said second index of refraction of said layer.
- 16. The optical fiber of claim 15 wherein said layer comprises a glass.
- 17. The optical fiber of claim 15 wherein at least one of said regions has a D-shaped cross section.
- 18. The optical fiber of claim 15 wherein at least one of said regions comprises a void.
- 19. The optical fiber of claim 18 wherein said void is evacuated.
- 20. The optical fiber of claim 18 wherein said void contains a gas.
- 21. The optical fiber of claim 15 wherein at least one of said regions contains a solid material.
- 22. The optical fiber of claim 15 wherein said cladding includes a side partially defining said region, said side including at least a portion that is one of convex and concave.
- 23. The optical fiber of claim 15 wherein said core comprises rare earth ions.
- 24. The optical fiber of claim 23 wherein said rare earth ions include ytterbium ions.
- 25. The optical fiber of claim 15 wherein said cladding comprises a cross section in the shape of a convex polygon.
- 26. The optical fiber of claim 15 wherein said layer has an inner surface having a circular cross section.
- 27. An optical fiber, comprising:
a core comprising an index of refraction; a cladding surrounding said core, said cladding comprising a first index of refraction that is less than said index of refraction; a layer surrounding and contacting said cladding; a region between said layer and said cladding, said layer having an inner surface partially defining said region, said region comprising an index of refraction that is different than said first index of refraction; and wherein said cladding occupies at least about 60% of the area inside said inner surface of said layer.
- 28. The optical fiber of claim 27 wherein said cladding occupies at least about 70% of the area inside said inner surface of said layer.
- 29. The optical fiber of claim 27 wherein said cladding occupies at least about 80% of the area inside said inner surface of said layer.
- 30. The optical fiber of claim 27 wherein said cladding occupies at least about 90% of the area inside said inner surface of said layer
- 31. The optical fiber of claim 27 wherein said inner surface of said layer has a circular cross section.
- 32. The optical fiber of claim 27 wherein said core comprises rare earth ions.
- 33. An optical fiber comprising:
a core comprising an index of refraction; a cladding surrounding said core and comprising a first index of refraction that is less than said index of refraction of said core; a layer surrounding and contacting said cladding, said layer comprising a second index of refraction that is different than said first index of refraction; a region between said layer and said cladding, said region comprising a third index of refraction that is different than said first and second indices of refraction, wherein said region comprises a straight side, said straight side and said layer defining said region, or wherein said cladding includes a side partially defining said region, said side including a curved portion.
- 34. The optical fiber of claim 33 wherein at least one of said regions comprises a void.
- 35. The optical fiber of claim 34 wherein said void is evacuated.
- 36. The optical fiber of claim 34 wherein said void contains a gas.
- 37. The optical fiber of claim 33 wherein at least one of said regions contains a solid material.
- 38. The optical fiber of claim 33 wherein said core comprises rare earth ions.
- 39. The optical fiber of claim 33 wherein said rare earth ions include ytterbium ions.
- 40. The optical fiber of claim 33 wherein said cladding comprises a cross section in the shape of a convex polygon.
- 41. The optical fiber of claim 33 wherein said second index of refraction of said layer is less than said first index of refraction of said cladding.
- 42. The optical fiber of claim 33 wherein said layer has an inner surface having a circular cross section.
- 43. The optical fiber of claim 1 wherein said layer has an inner surface, and wherein said cladding occupies at least about 60% of the area inside said inner surface of said layer.
- 44. An optical fiber comprising:
a core comprising rare earth ions and an index of refraction; a cladding surrounding said core, said cladding comprising a first index of refraction that is less than said index of refraction of said core; a layer surrounding and contacting said cladding; said cladding and said layer defining a region between said cladding and said layer, said region having an index of refraction that is different than said first index of refraction of said cladding; and wherein the cross section of said cladding is not shaped as a cross.
- 45. The optical fiber of claim 44 wherein said core comprises rare earth ions.
- 46. The optical fiber of claim 44 wherein said region comprises a D-shaped cross section.
- 47. The optical fiber of claim 44 wherein said cross section of said cladding is shaped as a convex polygon.
- 48. The optical fiber of claim 47 wherein said convex polygon has eight sides.
- 49. The optical fiber of claim 44 wherein said cladding includes at least one side having at least a portion that is curved, said portion of said side partially defining said region.
- 50. The optical fiber of claim 44 wherein said region comprises a void.
- 51. The optical fiber of claim 50 wherein said void is evacuated.
- 52. The optical fiber of claim 50 wherein said void contains a gas.
- 53. The optical fiber of claim 44 wherein said region contains a solid material.
- 54. The optical fiber of claim 44 wherein said layer comprises an index of refraction that is different than said first index of refraction of said cladding.
- 55. The optical fiber of claim 44 wherein said layer has an inner surface having a circular cross section.
- 56. The optical fiber of claim 33 wherein said region has a D-shaped cross section.
