Claims
- 1. A double clad optical fibre comprising a substantially single mode core doped with an active lasant material and having a refractive index n.sub.1, an inner multimode cladding surrounding said core having a refractive index n.sub.2, and an outer cladding surrounding said inner multimode cladding having a refractive index n.sub.3, where n.sub.3 <n.sub.2 <n.sub.1, the position of said core relative to a cross sectional plane of said inner multimode cladding varies transversely in a continuous manner along the length of the fibre for increasing the efficiency of coupling of multimode radiation out of said inner multimode cladding into said core.
- 2. The optical fibre of claim 1 wherein the said variation of position of the core along the length of the fibre is radial.
- 3. The optical fibre of claims 1 or 2 wherein the magnitude of variation of position in a radial direction over a length of fibre given by l.sub.abs is at least equal to the diameter of the core, and where: ##EQU4## where x is the ratio of the outer to inner core areas, N is the total number density of lasant particles, P(O) is the launched pump power. P.sub.S is the saturation power and is given by ##EQU5## where .sigma..sub.ep and .sigma..sub.ap are the pump emission and absorption cross-sections, respectively, .tau. is the upper level lifetime, A is area of the multimode inner cladding and hv.sub.p is the photon energy of the pump radiation.
- 4. The optical fibre of claim 1 wherein said variation of position of the core along the length of the fibre is angular.
- 5. The optical fibre of claim 1, 2 or 4 wherein said single mode core is doped with a rare-earth element, at least one Bragg grating formed in said single mode core.
- 6. The optical fibre according to claim 1 wherein the optical fibre is an optical gain medium.
- 7. The optical fibre according to claim 6 wherein said optical fibre comprises a fibre amplifier.
- 8. The optical fibre according to claim 6 wherein said optical fibre comprises a fibre laser.
- 9. A double clad optical fibre comprising a substantially single mode core having a refractive index, n.sub.1 and comprising a first waveguide region, an inner multimode cladding having a refractive index n.sub.2, where n.sub.1 >n.sub.2 surround said core and comprising a second waveguide region, an outer cladding having a refractive index, n.sub.3, surrounding said inner multimode cladding where n.sub.2 >n.sub.3, the transverse position of said single mode core within said inner multimode cladding relative to an axial central region of said inner multimode cladding continuously varying from said axial central region along at least a portion of the length of the fibre for increasing the efficiency of coupling radiation out of said second waveguide region into said first waveguide region.
- 10. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein said core position varies transversely relative to said cladding central region.
- 11. The optical fibre of claim 10 wherein said core position varies radially relative to said cladding central region.
- 12. The optical fibre of claim 10 wherein said core position varies angularly about said cladding central region.
- 13. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein said core position varies sinusoidally relative to said cladding central region along said fibre portion.
- 14. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein said positional variation of said core within inner cladding is periodic along said fibre portion.
- 15. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein said fibre has a circular cross sectional configuration.
- 16. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein said fibre has a four-sided cross sectional configuration.
- 17. The optical fibre of claim 16 wherein said four-sided configuration is rectangular.
- 18. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein said fibre is formed from a pulled perform of the fibre having grooves formed in at least a portion of the surface of said fibre perform.
- 19. The optical fibre of claim 18 wherein said grooves are formed at least on opposite sides of said fibre preform after which said fibre preform is pulled.
- 20. The optical fibre of claim 19 wherein said grooves are V-shaped.
- 21. The optical fibre of claim 18 wherein said grooves are formed as a helical groove along said fibre portion after which said fibre preform is pulled.
- 22. The optical fibre of claim 21 wherein said grooves are V-shaped.
- 23. The optical fibre of claim 18 wherein the ratio of cross sectional area of said cladding relative to cross sectional area said core is in the range of about 12:1 to about 400:1.
- 24. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein said core is doped with a rare-earth species.
- 25. The optical fibre of claim 24 wherein said core is co-doped a plurality of rare-earth species.
- 26. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein at least one Bragg grating is formed in said fibre core.
- 27. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein the fibre is utilized as an optical gain medium.
- 28. The optical fibre of claim 27 wherein said optical gain medium is fibre laser or fibre amplifier.
- 29. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein said core position varies radially relative to said cladding central region, the magnitude of variation, l.sub.abs, of said core position along said fibre portion is given by: ##EQU6## where x is the ratio of the outer to inner core areas, N is the total number density of active element particles, P(O) is the launched pump power and P.sub.S is the saturation power.
- 30. The optical fibre of claim 29 wherein P.sub.S is given by: ##EQU7## where .sigma..sub.ep and .sigma..sub.ap are the pump emission and pump absorption cross-sections, respectively, .tau. is the upper level lifetime, A is the area of said cladding and hv.sub.p is the photon energy of the pump radiation.
- 31. The optical fibre of claim 9 wherein said fibre is a double clad fibre comprising a substantially single mode core having a refractive index n.sub.1 embedded in a multimode inner cladding having a refractive index n.sub.2 embedded in an outer cladding having a refractive index n.sub.3 where n.sub.3 <n.sub.2 <n.sub.1.
