Claims
- 1. An optical fibre organizer which has at one face thereof:
- (a) an inlet port and an outlet port through which optical fibres can pass substantially in the plane of said face;
- (b) a through port that extends through said face to an opposite face of the organizer, the through port extending from a convex portion of said face at an angle to its radius vector at said convex portion such that an optical fibre extending through the through port and over said convex portion is constrained to a minimum bend radius at least equal to its critical bend radius; and
- (c) optical fibre storage means positioned with respect to the ports such that an optical fibre passing between the inlet port and the through port or between the outlet port and the through port is constrained by an outer surface of the storage means to a minimum bend radius at least equal to the critical bend radius of the optical fibre.
- 2. An organizer according to claim 1 in which a wall of the through port is curved along a path towards the optical fibre storage means at a minimum bend radius at least equal to the critical bend radius of the optical fibre.
- 3. An organizer according to claim 2, in Which the curved wall results from a progressive broadening of the cross-sectional size of the through port towards said face of the organizer, the through port also providing a substantially straight passage from said face to said opposite face of the organizer.
- 4. An organizer according to claim 3, in which the progressive broadening occurs at only part of the periphery of the through port, the through port remaining substantially cylindrical over the remainder of its periphery, an intersection between the broadening part and the substantially cylindrical part having a minimum radius of curvature at least equal to the critical bend radius of the optical fibre.
- 5. An organizer according to claim 1, having at least eight said inlet ports and at least two said outlet ports and at least two said optical fibre storage means.
- 6. An organizer according to claim 5, which is substantially symmetrical about a plane between the two optical fibre storage means.
- 7. An organizer according to claim 1, which additionally has at least one optical fibre organizer tray positioned to receive optical fibres from said inlet port or said outlet port.
- 8. An organizer according to claim 7, which has two outlet ports, the organizer tray being positioned to receive optical fibres from the two outlet ports.
- 9. An assembly which comprises two organizers according to claim 1 placed back-to-back such that their through ports are in communication with one another.
- 10. An organizer according to claim 1, in which the optical fibre storage means comprises a hollow drum allowing a free end of optical fibre to pass from one of the ports to the interior of the drum and to be stored therein at a minimum bend radius greater than that at which is suffers permanent damage.
- 11. An organizer according to claim 1, which is of unitary construction.
- 12. An organizer according to claim 1, which additionally comprises at least one optical fibre organizer tray fed by optical fibres from the inlet port of the outlet port.
- 13. An assembly which comprises two optical fibre organizers, each said organizer having at one face thereof:
- (a) an optical fibre inlet;
- (b) an optical fibre outlet;
- (c) means positioned between the inlet and the outlet that constrains an optical fibre passing between the inlet and the outlet to a minimum bend radius at least equal to the critical bend radius of the optical fibre; and
- (d) a through port that extends through said face to an opposite face of the organizer;
- the two organizers placed back-to-back such that their through ports are in communication with each other.
- 14. An optical fibre cable splice closure incorporating an assembly according to claim 13.
- 15. An optical fibre organizer which has at one face thereof:
- (a) an inlet port and an outlet port through which optical fibres can pass substantially in the plane of said face;
- (b) a through port that extends through said face to an opposite face of the organizer; and
- (c) optical fibre storage means positioned with respect to the ports such that an optical fibre passing between the inlet port and the through port or between the outlet port and the through port is constrained by an outer surface of the storage means to a minimum bend radius at least equal to the critical bend radius of the optical fibre;
- the through port having a wall which is curved along a path towards the optical fibre storage means at a minimum bend radius at least equal to the critical bend radius of the optical fibre.
- 16. An assembly which comprises two organizers according to claim 15 placed back-to-back such that their through ports are in communication with each other.
