Claims
- 1. An optical coupler comprising: means for emitting light;
- planar optical waveguide formed on a substrate; and
- a first cylindrical lens disposed between said light emitting means and one end of said optical waveguide and arranged such that the focusing direction thereof is in the direction of the thickness of said waveguide so that light emitted from said light emitting means is focused by said first cylindrical lens in a first direction perpendicular to the surface of said optical waveguide and remains unfocused in a second direction, said second direction being perpendicular to said first direction and perpendicular to the direction of the propagation of said light through said optical waveguide.
- 2. An optical coupler according to claim 1 further comprising a collimating lens, disposed between said light emitting means and said cylindrical lens, for collimating the light emitted from said light emitting means and directing it to said first cylindrical lens.
- 3. An optical coupler according to claim 1, wherein said first cylindrical lens is a cylindrical Fresnel lens.
- 4. An optical coupler according to claim 2, wherein said collimating lens is a rod lens.
- 5. An optical coupler as in claim 1, further comprising an optical processing section formed in said optical waveguide for receiving and processing light propagated through said optical waveguide.
- 6. An optical coupler as in claim 1 further comprising a second cylindrical lens for receiving the light output of said waveguide, said second cylindrical lens being disposed to receive light emitted from said optical waveguide and having a focusing direction in a direction of the thickness of said waveguide so that the light emitted by said optical waveguide is focused in a first direction perpendicular to the surface of said optical waveguide and remains unfocused in a second direction, said second direction being perpendicular to said first direction and perpendicular to the direction of the propagation of said light through said optical waveguide.
- 7. An optical coupler as in claim 6, further comprising focusing lens for focusing the light which passes through said second cylindrical lens.
- 8. An optical coupler as in claim 7, wherein said focusing lens is a rod lens.
- 9. An optical coupler comprising:
- means for receiving light;
- a planar optical waveguide formed on a substrate; and
- a cylindrical lens disposed between said light receiving means and one light emitting end of said optical waveguide and arranged such that the focusing direction of said cylindrical lens is in the direction of the thickness of said optical waveguide so that light transmitted from said optical waveguide is focused in a first direction perpendicular to the surface of said optical waveguide and remains unfocused in a second direction, said second direction being perpendicular to said first direction and perpendicular to the direction of the propagation of said light through said optical waveguide.
- 10. An optical coupler as in claim 9, further comprising a focusing lens for focusing the light which passes through said cylindrical lens.
- 11. An optical coupler as in claim 10, wherein said focusing lens is a rod lens.
